I submit for consideration as the most obnoxious, idiotic, and infuriating defense against obnoxious, idiotic, and infuriating behavior: "haters going to hate".

The catalyst for this thread? Lebron James. The man is almost universally reviled for the bullshit stunt he pulled last summer, a spectacle of narcissistic arrogance that soured a previously favorable public perception beyond repair.

But despite all the hate, a not-insubstantial number of people defend his behavior on the grounds of, well, "You're all a bunch of jealous haters, and haters gonna hate!"

Every time I read or hear this, my head explodes. Seriously, I've gone through like two dozen heads this year.

It's obviously not just sports. Basically any time an arrogant, self-absorbed tool does something incredibly egotistical and/or moronic, you run into this defense. It's so self-insulating as to completely bypass the rules of logic and reasoning, but that doesn't stop its deployment in the face of intelligent and accurate criticism.

So I'm proposing a very simple rule: if you're not a reasonably humble guy or gal trying your best to meet reasonable expectations, you don't get to use "haters gonna hate" as an excuse for your behavior. Attempting to do so instantly labels you as 100% wrong and worthy of ridicule.

I don't like it either, basically because it's such a flimsy excuse yet it's indestructible and I hate it. I've learned though that once someone uses this excuse they are not worthy to debate and I usually just try to forget it.

Yeah well...

In all seriousness though, I do agree with you. "Haters gonna Hate" isn't exactly the best way to defend yourself when you do or say something stupid.

y u mad tho?

The problem isnt that douchebags use it; it's that ONLY douchebags use it. "Haters gonna hate" was supposed to be empowering, an affirmation for those of us who are given shit all the time for whatever reason to just let it roll off your back. They're haters. Its not like they're gonna stop giving you shit if you change according to their whim; they'll just hate on something else about you.

Haterde has calories, so keep sipping if you want.

Agreed. I was just thinking about that phrase a few days back. It basically boils down to the fact that the people who use the phrase don't even know what it means, they just say it because it's a meme. The point of "haters gonna hate" is to emphasis things like sexism or racism; things that a person can't possibly control about themselves (not counting radical surgery). But when you do something stupid and get called-out on it, "haters gonna hate" doesn't apply. You're just an idiot, and that's something that is entirely your fault.

I just throw it out at random intervals to confuse people.

What are you supposed to do when your Dragonborn Cleric starts shouting that at people who are offended by lizard folk? Nothing. Just let him pass...

I chose the middle option, because while yes, it's really just a cop-out from the discussion used by people who don't have any arguments to back up their defense of their favorite film/book/game, sometimes it's exactly the other way around. Sometimes haters really ARE gonna hate, no matter how many times you'll prove them wrong.

Case in point? Heavy Rain. I spent countless hours counter-arguing people who bashed it saying 'it's a movie, not a game' or 'there's nothing more to it than QTE's', and proving them wrong, but for every reasonable guy who either agreed with me or presented counter-counter arguments, there were 10 others who just said 'no, ur wrong, u suck, and HR suck as well'. Also, due to lack of Xbox (or any interest to the series, really) I never played any Halo game, but I can imagine the normal Halo fans banging their heads against the wall, whenever someone bashes it just for being popular.

Don't forget the "troll card" too!
Apparently, any dissenting opinions can be considering "trolling" and if you disagree with them, you can just play the "troll card" and instantly end any argument or discussion preemptively!

Someone comes up with an intelligent response, you play the Troll Card and claim you were just trolling them the whole time. Suddenly, instead of being an idiot, you're a "comedic genius" and they are just SOOO stupid for taking your post seriously in the first place!
