Just like the fashion, the rules became outdated, now that the fashion is coming back, it doesn't mean the rules should.

This is a new generation, we should be making new rules, just like they made the rules for their hat wearing in the 50s.

Wearing a hat indoors is fine, if you're alright with the possibility of looking like of an idiot.

I sometimes wear a black Cannibal Corpse beanie or a blue or black Detroit Tigers hat (plain baseball cap with an old English D on it).

Personally I don't find anything rude about wearing a hat indoors. It just isn't a logical thing to get upset about.

...Unless you wear cowboy hats, in which case you're a douchebag.

I think those pointless traditions are just that, pointless. They have no reason to exist so there is no reason to follow them. At least last time I checked, my hat does not cause pain or suffering to those in the room with me.

It pisses me the fuck off when someone comes into my house wearing a hat.

To all those wondering why it's rude, wearing a hat indoors shows a readiness to leave and, to an extent, that you value the company you're in so little that you're perfectly willing to drop everything and leave at a moment's notice, without any consideration for your host.
So if I really want to be polite I should take all my clothes off. It takes much longer to put your clothes on than your hat afterall.

At The Cenotaph - Siegfried Sassoon

I saw the Prince of Darkness, with his Staff,
Standing bare-headed by the Cenotaph:
Unostentatious and respectful, there
He stood, and offered up the following prayer.
'Make them forget, O Lord, what this Memorial
Means; their discredited ideas revive;
Breed new belief that War is purgatorial
Proof of the pride and power of being alive;
Men's biologic urge to readjust
The Map of Europe, Lord of Hosts, increase;
Lift up their hearts in large destructive lust;
And crown their heads with blind vindictive Peace.'
The Prince of Darkness to the Cenotaph
Bowed. As he walked away I heard him laugh.

If death himself can be respectful by not wearing a hat I don't think it is beyond anyone else! While I enjoy all of the 'rebels' who will wear a woolen hat with a brim even if it is 35 degrees outside, I think it is ridiculous; I will respect a cultural tradition if it is important to someone - I wouldn't walk around a Mosque wearing shoes.

Dylan Moran rules.

OT: I don't really care if you wear a hat indoors. I personally don't wear hats that often, only when it is really cold, which is when I break out the New York Yankees beanie I "borrowed" from one of my friends when I was in New York and it was snowing.

its not. there are certain occasions where you maybe shouldnt wear your hat, or at least wear a certain type of hat that fits the situation.

and for anyone here thinks its rude to wear hats in church, women wear hats in church all the time. why is it considered rude for a man to do the same?

It depends on where I am, what I'm doing, who I'm with, etc.
I wear a top hat on occasion and will typically keep it on at all times unless offered a place to put it (like a hat rack or coat rack) or when eating. Actually, one of my social gambits relies on my wearing the hat. I always have a deck of cards stashed in it that I'll pull out for a quick game of poker amongst friends. Its good fun.

I'm a girl & I sometimes wear baseball caps. (on occasion though). I find it rude in certain places for men to wear hats, such as church, because that is disrespectful. But women are allowed to wear them in church and at funerals. I went to a school where our dress code was the most lenient one in the entire county and we weren't allowed a hat unless we were wearing hoodies. Even the girls weren't allowed to wear hats. They took them up. But if you find it rude, just politely ask the person to take it off & if they decline, that's their priority. :)

hats should be taken off when eating and inside someone's home, but they're fine anywhere else. I usually do not wear hats due to my afro, but try to wear them as often as possible when I cut my hair.

It depends on what kind of hat. If it's a cap, then it's not rude, but if it's something like a sombrero, then that would be weird.

I don't care if you wear a hat indoors, and if someone tries to tell me to take it off inside I'll deffinately be ready to fight for it. I mean it's not the fucking 1930s, who cares. We don't doff our caps at people, there's no need, you'd look like a beurk. Men don't have to wear suits everywhere either, we don't live in as much of a class society. It seems like useless nostalgia at times.

My god calm down, fight someone over taking off a hat? You sound like those gangster wanna-bes at my school who threaten to beat someone up if a officer or a offical tells them to take off their bandannas / hoodies / pull up their pants. People seriously need to relearn some respectful ways. "Slavery that's what!" Seriously...?

For the thread, I believe hats shouldn't be worn indoors, but it depends on some situations. If you're wearing it just because it's some gang-sign or distasteful, then take it off. If it's part of a special occasion or whatever, keep it on. What's next, people refusing to take off their shoes when entering someone's home because their shoe is too valuable and precious to be off their foot?

Depends on where it is. (I wear a hat).

In a nice restuarant you should take it off. In Mcdonald's or IHOP, you're safe.

In Walmart, leave it on. In an art gallery, take it off.

At a friends house, leave it on. At your B/GF's parent's house, take it off.

Etc.
