I don't have ads, my anti-virus pretty much blocks EVERYTHING so it has never been an issue for me.

I used to hate them the first few times I accidentally clicked them, and there was no way out of it without confirming that I was above 18, so I had to close my tab and navigate back to the page I was on.
I have, however, learned to avoid them, so now they're only a mild nuisance. It's the most annoying when I'm scrolling with my arrow-keys and they suddenly stop working.
I don't blame the escapist for it, but I sure as hell won't be buying any Dead space or Mass effect products now.

Im pretty sure Jim Sterling, Yatzee, Loading Ready Run, etc, dont make content and extend there contracts for shits and giggles. If you even put the slightest thought into that post you would have realized its you making bullshit excuses.
I've never seen a site this blatant about advertising. While they have a premium service available.

Seriously, for your premise to work, the Publisher's Club should be a complete disaster, with up to a hundred members.
PubClub gets a few dozen signups a week currently, which is respectable and helps us offset some minor costs (office supplies, paying some contract content producers), etc. To get anywhere to the point of "covering" our costs, it would need to be something like several hundred signups a day. While we love our PubClub supporters, and the money definitely has helped us pay some people who were waiting for money (and it is trending upwards, woo!), it is nowhere near to replacing the 5 to 6 figure checks that a one or two month ad campaign can bring in.

Buy PubClub memberships for friends! We have talked about a donate button before, but I'm not sure as to the exact reason why we don't have it. I think you can just buy multiple years on your own account for a lifetime of no ads or worrying about renewals. :) I'll bring it up at our tech meeting tomorrow in case it's not easy to buy multiple years currently.

Ok after a bit more tinkering I was FINALLY able to see the Dead Space 2 popup. I had to use Internet Explorer to finally make it pop up. Needless to say I can see why people have a problem with those.

I've always been of the opinion if a sites goes as far as to solicit it's users to disable their ad blockers, as The Escapist does, then they should at least extend the courtesy of not being totally obnoxious with their ads in return. Let's face it with most browsers these days you have a pretty decent level of built in protection against ads and you have to manually shut that off if you want to support a site by enabling their ads.

I firmly believe that it's possible for a site to advertise on the site and not be totally in your face about it. Massive popups that cover a significant portion of the content you are attempting to view is not one of those ways.

Funny. I've never seen a popup on this site and I don't have a pub club membership or adblock (which I find untrustworthy). Maybe it differs from place to place?

Looks like TheEscapist didn't take too kindly to this being talked about in this way.

But yeah. Honestly, two options.
1: Buy Pub Club (which i intend to do myself soon)
2: Deal with the ads.

I was wondering how long it would be before this topic came up...

The Gaikai game streaming stuff actually pays us fairly decently for time spent playing any of the game demos, or so I've been told. We're also the first site of any size that they are trying it on, and they're tweaking it to various degrees still. I'm sorry it chugs your computer though, I'll bring it up and see if there's an opt out option somewhere tomorrow.
I understand that the site has to advertise, but please bring this up.
Just trying to get off the front page of The Escapist to read the first page of this thread has driven me to insanity, constantly causing my PC (which isn't that old, only a year or so) to freeze up for a good 5 minutes per advert.
*edit* - if it helps, the Dragon Age advert is perhaps the worst, as it can really slow down computers.

[sub]Its especially annoying because I already own the games they're advertising I play for free...[/sub]

Ok, why are there like ten people who have been suspended for mentioning that certain thing for that certain browser? Is the Escapist based out of China?

I understand not wanting people to mention it, but suspending them? That'll endear you to the forum community

Course its annoying, just like watching any sort of advert, specially when your moving on from vid to vid having to watch the same ad time after time... Gets old quick. However I put up with it, it supports the site which means they can keep going and I can enjoy the vids. I'm getting these vids for free the least I can do is put up with a 30 second ad every now and again.

That and I use earphones so when the ad pops up, I just take them off put them on the side and maybe take a sip of my cupper. Wait for the ad to finish and get on with watching the vid. Its a mild annoyance sure but me'h, as said above.. I'm getting the vids for free, I get the enjoyment of watching the vids and thus I'll put up with the minor annoyance.

Also the pop ups that come on the side of the screen? I just ignore them. Barely notice them most of the time. They don't hinder me or my enjoyment so I honestly don't have an opinion on them.

I was literally just about to click on this thread to say "what popups?" when a popup got in the way of my cursor. I don't think they're all that bad, they're kind of annoying, but then again, that's the purpose of advertising...

They can be annoying sometimes, but I don't really think it's something to rage over, I just live with it.

At first they where small in the corner, wich i am fine with. But them they became much bigger taking up way to much of the screen. Cant you go back to the small ones if you are going to keep them?
