Baccano, Gurren Lagann, GunXSword, Oh!Edo Rocket, Vandread, Baka & Test, Chrome Shelled Regios, or Linebarrels of Iron (this one you'll need to let the first three episodes run their course. Honestly they should have cut them up into flashbacks and put them throughout the series because the protagonist isn't that likeable during this period) would also be good to check out

IMO this looks like a list of generally overrated overhyped anime :p
Death Note and Akira are, in my opinion, the best of what you've listed.

Fullmetal Alchemist was one of the most disappointing things I ever watched. I had people for YEARS tell me how good it was. For YEARS they were pestering me, extolling the virtues of how unbelievably amazing fullmetal alchemist was. I finally decide to watch it and it's basically just another Shōnen anime with, let's be honest here, somewhat splotchy story-telling. I honestly don't see why it's so highly regarded.

FMA: Brotherhood however, was far superior in my opinion.

If you ever want to see some fucked up shit that will make you think. Watch Deadman Wonderland. Its messed up. BUT awesome.

If you want something lighter then Cowboy Bebop is the way to go along wiht Ghost in a shell, i saw afew ghostin the shell adn its good. Along with cowboy bebop.

If you've been watching Bleach and Naruto then I think FMA: Brotherhood is the next logical choice. Like Naruto and Bleach there is a unique and interesting combat and societal gimmick in the form of Alchemy, it's fairly long but unlike those two it dedicates its time to a coherent story arc. The story is quite interesting but told simply and it balances action/comedy/plot quite well.

If you do want to move in a totally different direction and just dive in to the classics then I'm going to have clamor on with everyone else here and say: Akira. It's two hours of gorgeous animation and awesomeness. You may, however, never see your teddy bear the same way again.

Then I'd jump into Cowboy Bebop which is the absolute classic of the character driven anime. The plot is more of a premise and every episode is more about the development of the characters rather than exploring an overarching story. Occasionally events stumble in that direction, but then they immediately backpedal to the bounty of the episode and how it shows more of the awesometastic characters.

I have two recommendations, first, Fairy Tail, brilliant anime, great characters, very funny and don't worry about filler, there's not much except the current season, but the filler is watchable and really funny. Second, Rurouni Kenshin a classic alot of action, good bits of comedy and the second season is the best thing i've watched in a while, although word of caution, avoid Season 3, it's an example of filler gone wrong

Cowboy Bebop? Haven't watched it. Plan to, but it's incredibly hard to get it on DVD now.
US: http://www.rightstuf.com/1-800-338-6827/catalogmgr/2WwunpI93w6RqIz7oj/browse/item/76960/4/0/0

Not *that* hard to get. You can also get the original release off eBay if you want.

And yes, it's a great show worth buying.
I live in the UK and have had that version of Cowboy Bebop on my Play.com orders list for over a month (right next to Outlaw Star and Gurren Lagann, which will also probably stay on my order list forever with no stock, evne thoguh I ordered all of them when they claimed to have stock). I'm a bit worrisome about dealing with private sellers, but may have to at some point.

the anime you should watch next is FLCL, the show protagonist Naota wants to be normal but his brothers girlfriend is acting strange and there's an even stranger girl hitting on him. literally. With a bass guitar. and there are robots that keep springing from his head. things get very weird, very quickly. its only a short anime 6 episodes but i would recommend it. its mad and funny, watch FLCL.

You know what man, I'm gunna quote you a second time, just so you get this message. I am glad you pointed me to that, because I have now taken the plunge with that private seller, who happened to be selling all the things I wanted at not half bad prices for them for how hard they are to find.

Congratulations, give yourself an internet, because you've positively affected my life.

I'll second this since FLCL is so delightfully nonsensical, and yet completely awesome.

FMA would be the one I suggest first, but Code Geass is a great watch too. Avatar is also amazing, definitely put that on your to watch list. As for Naruto, nothing really important happens after where you are, you could almost certainly get away with skipping to shippuden. I find the series very enjoyable, if you ignore the filler.

Cowboy Bebop is going to win the thread
I voted and now FMA 33 votes vs Beepop 31 votes!

I went with FMA and liked the first one that came out (51 episodes) but if Brotherhood really follows the manga then I'd reccomend that as the manga was better.

Akira, Death Note and FMA, from that list, in that order.
A couple of my friends have seen Ghost in the Shell and have told me it's quite good. So that one too, maybe.

Just watch the first half of Death Note. If you are going to watch all of Death Note, read the final book instead of the episode. There's some post-ending stuff not in the anime.

Also, Darker than Black and Code Geass.

I'm going to watch Akira now.

It seems it's a tie(almost) pollwise between Cowboy Bebop and Full Metal Alchemist next.

Thanks a lot for the advice guys/girls.Perhaps this will change overnight(probably not) in someone else's favor but I think I will stick with the classics first then move on to more recent ones.

That being said,I think Cowboy Bebop might be next on my watch list.

Cowboy Bebop is awesome, it's like firefly, except better

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is great, much better than the orignal series

Avatar: the last airbender is one of the best TV shows to ever come out of the west

Naruto shippuden gets slow at times, but watch subbed ones, still good show

Also One Piece, one of the best manga/anime ever created; I'm just sayin'

Death Note I have not yet seen because I have heard a BS twist in the middle ruins the series
