I know enough Aikido to disarm him provided he's some average hoodlum with little weapons knowledge. I'd be making sure my girlfriend is out of harm's way, of course. If he's a desperate guy that just needs to calm down, I'll disarm and subdue. If he's starting to hurt people, I'll disarm and kick ass. And then subdue.

I would go into the store buy a shotgun for myself(i live in a hunting town and the closest thing to my house is a gun shop) and buy 5 more for my friends. the guy gets scared and runs away
LVL up!
+5 bravery!
Option 2:
(I live were i actually live)
Run into the store, hide, call for help on my cell phone and the police comes. The guy gets arrested.
LVL UP!
+5 karma

God you people are dishonest. If someone pointed a gun at you, unless you're militarily trained, there's no way that you're gonna try to disarm him. I'd say 95% of all people would do whatever they could to save themselves, or just drop to the floor without thinking.

I'd throw my self at the closest piece of cover, then I'd try my best at disarming him.

Depends on were abouts he his in the stall, if he's close to one of the aisles and I haven't been spotted yet I'd try and sneak my way towards him and attempt to disarm him, if he isn't and I've been spotted then I'm hitting the deck, not a time to be playing hero guns work better then my Martial Arts.

Loot a nearby store while everyone is distracted?

Seriously though; since my training has taught me how to disarm an opponent (British Army and security course) - I'd stay still, hands up and talk to the fellow.

Yes, disarms do work occasionally. But in a mall where someone has the drop on me from relatively close but not point-blank then I don't favour my odds. Though you can think otherwise, I say as one trained individual, it's not a good idea.

Trying to talk the man down, however, is a very good idea. I know that if I reach for any sort of weapon (not allowed them in the UK alas) or blunt object I'm getting a chest full of lead before my hands get anywhere near my stuff.

The mall will be in panic, so the bloke might be distracted - but the OP points out the gun is in your vicinity, and you're in the line of fire (so it's reasonable that his aim is going to come back to you, as you're a central point).

I'd strike up a conversation, moving slightly to shield loved ones (and try to get them to back out the way - given most of the mall is running around screaming it should be OK) but turn slightly sideways and be ready to drop into a roll towards the nearest cover (minimising my profile as much as possible at all times, so I'm harder to hit - even if only slightly so). Either he backs down or I try to get out the way - and sit behind a nice marble potted plant and wait for one of the other many, many heroes present in society (via this poll) to beat him up.

Then change my pants.

So a little of all of them really, so clicking "other".

I'd probably jump at him, or stand in front of a loved one as a shield, whichever's safer at the time.
Yeah, cause jumping at him is the safest thing I can think of.....

It was a simple, irrefutable fact that the United States could possibly have caught the Soviet Union off guard with a preemptive strike at its nuclear capabilities. That doesn't mean it would have been a good idea. There's a very big difference between "could work" and "will work". And that difference might be your corpse on the floor. "Deal with it."
Maybe if you are ever suprised by a gunman you can throw straw men at him and then make your escape. At no point have I said or implied that a disarm will work. You are simply trying to drag everyone else down to your level by trying to claim that it can't be done just because you can't do it. The defense mechanism at work.
It's ironic that you're talking about defense mechanisms while pointlessly insulting a person whose mental and physical toughness you have absolutely no idea about. It's also ironic that you talk about 'straw men' while blithely ignoring what I've said to try to fit it into your little argumentative caricature.

As I posted earlier:
That is what you (and some others in this thread) would do, and to make yourself feel better about it you try to convince yourself, via projection, that that is what everyone would do. You are not really comfortable with the idea that you would panic, but as long as you can believe that you're no different from everyone else, your ego remains intact.

It's not your fault, though. Our culture now discourages all conflict and any displays of manly behavior, even at the cost of innocent people dying preventable deaths. Our culture would rather have millions of dead bystanders than admit that it's okay to use violence in defense of others or yourself. Whenever there's a school shooting, there are always the usual explanations afterwards: we don't know what we would have done in that situation, trying to attack the gunman would have resulted in more deaths, let the police handle it etc. Anything but "well, maybe someone should have done something," since that would be admitting that violence is not always wrong.
I agree completely. One of my philosophies is "If everyone has a gun, nobody will commit a crime, and even if they do, they won't last long afterward." It's works in rural Texas.

Talk to him, and then if that fails, try and kill him with whatever I can find. Whatever happens, it'll probably end up messy, but I wouldn't hesitate to kill someone if I had to.

I'd actually quite enjoy killing someone if he was a violent criminal arsehole.
