I say go for it.
I'm British and while I don't hate America their ignorance does annoy me. (Apologizes to Americans but a lot of you do ruin it for the rest).
Yes they're will be controversy but if the company takes the advice of the Extra Credits video on controversy and stick up for the game no matter what the news says then it may get made.
Perhaps to combat it the fact that you're fighting America could be a big reveal at the end.

America doesn't like the idea of being vulnerable or being perceived as anything but invincible. I doubt an "Against America" shooter would ever get to the public.

When will we ever be able to play as Nazi Germany? I want to be the bad guys for once, dammit.
It would be a welcome change of perspective. Something new in the world of gaming.
I know right, I mean there could be an opening scene were there are five enemy soldiers on their knees, and your German officer demands that you shoot them. They could even make it that after shooting them you get a head ache and you go through a series of events about you not sure which side is right, at least we would get to kill a few Americans.

Its not about what factions there are, so much as the quality of the game. Amarican producers will make "Amarica Vs The World" games, and they will make great ones.

The problem is making a game thats against amarica, and having a huge budget for it.

I dont care if the game has me playing a nazi! If its a solid game, i'll play it.

This reminds me of something. A completely crazy and ridiculous idea I once had. Allow me to link.

Never mind that you can't see the little annotations (still haven't figured out how to make it zoom-in-able) the basic gist is an all-out war between everyone ever - completely tongue-in-cheek, of course. It would make for some pretty hilarious gaming, when you think about it. No matter which faction you're a part of. And some of them would get to fight Americans...
that is an awesome idea, quick sell it to a large game developer company!
Muahahaha, a get-rich quick scheme that might actually work!... assuming I can find a developer actually insane enough to take my idea on board :p. It was a product of sheer boredom and an overly creative imagination, somehow I can't see many devs being too enthralled.

But yes, it does seem hard at first, especially in M&B, but the interface that allows you do control them is actually quite clever and simple when you understand it. And you're one of your army all the time so there's often just an 'auto' setting if strategy isn't your bag (it isn't mine at all)

I'd highly reccomend M&B, it's PC only and it isn't all that polished but it has really low specs (not the greatest graphics but still very good). You can get it in GAME (UK) for like £10, absolute bargain. I paid £8.50 for it and I've played over 200 hours, significantly more than most £30 games I've bought.
Well considering my computer's specs for gaming may as well read "if it was made this millennium, it won't run", I'm still not confident. I hope to eventually get a new PC, and in the midst of the RTS shopping spree that will accompany this I'll try and remember Mount & Blade.

As brilliant an idea as this would be, it will never work. Publishers are just too careful, especially at the moment. It is assumed that the only market for games that matters is the American one, so publishers only agree to games which involve America in some way. It is also assumed that the Americans, having been typecast throughout history as the good guy, Hollywood hero, pure Aryan, middle class, church-going Christian in all areas of the media, are incapable of considering the idea that they might be caricatures of themselves. And this is why we end up with the disease known as Call-of-Duty.

Personally, I would relish the chance to play through a CoD-esque ww2 game where you play as a German soldier. That doesn't mean that I think the Nazis were right, nor does it mean that I begrudge the Americans their fair share of national pride. But who can honestly say that they wouldn't like a game that doesn't vomit American Ego-food in their face?

I'll look into my crystal orb to quote the reactions of the non-gamers and their sycophants: "Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah"

Seeing how America spends about six times the military budget [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures] as any other country, roughly 40% of all the military spending in the entire world, it would be an uphill fight.

Actually, I just played a pretty good "Vs. America" shooter: Prototype [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prototype_%28game%29]. Okay, that's not really a shooter, per se... but there's definately a bit of anti-Americanism going on there.

Really, if you pay really close attention to a lot of the shooters made these days, they're often built around the idea of invoking introspection. Betrayals by corrupted American officials are so common in gaming these days that it's become clique.

I've just been playing the thoroughly adequate Call Of Duty: Black Ops and something came to mind (and was reinforced by Yahtzee's comments).

Would anyone else really like to play an FPS/3rd person shooter AGAINST America?
Don't get me wrong, this is not a hate post against the Yank nation, more a fun idea that's been done in plenty of games previously (ie. allowing you to play as the 'enemy').

For example, do you remember how cool it was when you first got to play as the bosses in Street Fighter II or as Darth Vader in some (crappy) Star Whores game?

My point is, it would kick ass to play as the Viet Cong, Iraquis or Talban scum.

This would be particularly awesome since you could be the underdog and use stealth/sabotage/underhand tactics to manipulate/terrorize/steal weapons from the mighty American Empire.

Share your thoughts...
I think america is too full of itself to make a shooter where you take it down...
(yes I live there)

so on that merit, I want a game where you invade america!
that's a shooter! (sorry C&C Red Alert)

No. Who likes losing? Not me that's who.

You'd beat this insanely difficult mission in the middle of fucking nowhere and just piss your pants in pride and excitement, only to hear "They're dropping the nukes".

Doesn't sound fun to me.

That would be the worst if not business, then PR decision in history -- Six Days in Falluja (forgive my spelling) was supposed to celebrate American Service-members and we all know how that played out -- I could imagine large retailers being goaded into boycotting it.

Personally, I would love to play against America, on the grounds that, as someone of Russian descent, I often get stereotyped into a Vodka loving communist insurgent because of games like Call of Duty. And I do often wonder if shooting my fellow countrymen during every Call Of Duty (except WaW, which was slightly refreshing) is begginning to get a little insensitive...
If you're of "Russian descent" (as in you were not actually born here) then i wouldn't consider you a fellow countryman, so don't worry about it.
Perhaps, but I do feel somewhat indignified when i mow down what are essentially an important part of my culture...

And that sounded a little unnecessarily cold... I'm not sure I deserved that sort of response...
Yeah, sure. Are you American? If i was American i'd probably do the same thing.
No actually, I'm English, but my Mother is from Russia, and my father is from what was Soviet Ukraine, which is why i found your post somewhat offensive...

But back on topic, I think when Infinity Ward got you fighting Americans, it was somewhat disgised... I mean, you were fighting an American Enemy, but it's not like it was the Marine Corps or something like that, and I think something like that would be difficult to sell...

Hmm i could see a game like that it could be a dark fear choked oppressive America taking away all freedom from its citizens while conquering any and all countries it sees as a terrorist threat. And you could play a member of a group of freedom fighters made up of the conquered countries, those countries that fear being next, and Americans that think what is being done is wrong.

would be cool if you played a game where America is invaded, but instead of the governments promise of protecting its citizens on the west coast (where invasion would take place) the government pulls back and defends itself only, thus player finds himself in a Gorilla faction struggling to live day to day.

the first part of the game can be fighting back whoever invaded and pushed the US back, and as the US army slowly trudges its way back to reclaim its lost land the player must fight against the invading force and the US force!

Wasn't the last level in MW2 had the Americans as the bad guys? They can't advertise the game as "American are bad guys". Instead, it just needs to happen.

But Americans are a major source of video game income and a game where you are the Russians invading America won't fly for Fox News.
does anyone care what fox news thinks anymore?

I'd be up for it, but it'd be shouted down by the ignorant windbags in the media.

But by all means try, and for god's sake stand up to the inevitable manufactured outrage this time.
