Are poor graphics a deal-breaker for you? Can you look beyond appearance and sense a vital charm and solid refreshing gameplay fighting its way out? For example, take a look at this video and say whether you would avoid such a game because of its graphics, or some other reason.

Your opinions are welcome.

Well,i don't really like jRPGs.

But when it comes to visual side of things,i look for aesthetic side, not technical. Psychonauts is not too god in graphics department by modern standards, but the design is charming,to say the least.

I'd play it. Graphics are important, but they don't really make or break a game for me. As long as they're better than Atari level.

I'm a graphics whore, OK?

But I hate time limits, so I'd dislike this game anyway.

And actually, the graphics aren't bad, I like retro.

This was a really bad example considering this game is actually a parody of retro RPGs. It's supposed to be badly pixelated. But there are a lot of parts in the game where it busts out current day graphics.

How strange, I just watched a review of that a few minutes ago.

No I don't care about the graphics at all, I play games to PLAY them not to watch them.

In a world where you can make a game look really nice, having terrible graphics means you're either lazy or just plain have bad taste.

I would not play that game. Ever.

Considering I've played just about every console (save the two big price ones we have today), and have seen just about every spectrum of graphics there are out there, I'd actually say that I miss the days when we didn't put millions into making the breasts on a woman look real and focused on making the gameplay perfect, storylines that kept you wanting more, and a soundtrack that fit the mood of whatever you were doing at the time.

Suffice to say, as long as the graphics don't impede gameplay (and there have certainly been occasions for that), then I don't mind the graphics looking like NES to SNES, to PSX era graphics. As long as I enjoy the game itself.

To which I'd have to say I'd probably play that, yes. However, as someone else said, I'm really not a fan of timed scenarios unless they're far and few between, and forgiving enough that you don't need to be Asian or were able to beat the "No Hit Challenge" in Megaman 9 to beat.

depends on the game. fps' need to have up to date graphics. rpgs are boosted by graphics, but they arent super nessesary. i dont mind retro graphics though, unless its a fps.

I was reading a review for that in my Gamepro magazine and according to them its SUPPOSED to look that way. Something about being part of the appeal.

Don't care about bad graphics as long as you can tell what's going on and the game is fun.

Ok the simplistic graphics didn't bother me, but the game itself still seemed rather silly and I didn't really understand the point of it.

You are correct in thinking its supposed to look that way. Its supposed to appeal to fans of old school games such as Final Fantasy. That would be a game I wouldn't mind playing simply because the graphics harken back to the so called "golden age".

Its hard to say what games actually look bad and what games just have a different style. Banjo Kazooie doesn't look bad at all in my opinion in today's world, but take a game like...Perfect Dark, and those graphics are bland and lackluster. Nothing appealing whatsoever in that game.

You just picked a really bad example to support whatever argument you're trying to pose.

No, graphics are nice but gameplay is what sells it for me. There's a reason I still have tons of games from '01-'02 and the '90s that I play all the time - they're so classic and fun and nothing has matched them. I still like Dungeon Keeper, Deus Ex, the original non-source Half Life, the old classic Command & Conquer games (As well as newer ones that are not current like Generals), Freelancer (Still a good looking game IMO), Fallout 1 & 2, etc. Some old games that are good that I don't still play but still have are like Twinsen's Oddyssey, Operation Flashpoint, X-Com UFO Defense, and others.

Graphics in this day and age are expected and new games that look like old ones would have to be pretty faithful and fluid for me to like them. Otherwise, I say the best of the old graphics are from the period where such graphics were prevalent and new games should look more realistic.

I don't play jRPG's, but as far as graphics go they are probably lowest on my list, fun factor, game play, story are far more important. Anyone can make something look pretty with fancy graphics these days. Its more a question of will you want to play it for more than 5 minutes.
