Poll: How Big is Too Big?

1 is just all sorts of uncanny valley.
I'd say 6 and 7 and more eyes of 90s characters, most series don't have eyes that huge anymore. I begin to be a bit bothered at 6, however I am a massive fan of Higurashi and they have bloody massive eyes, so I'd have probably have to go with 7.

I think 5 is the general cutoff point for me. However, I can deal with the higher numbers if it's all stylized. 4 and 5 are probably my favourites, actually. Anything lower doesn't really do anything for me and anything higher looks a bit uncanny, unless it looks like it fits in context.

Yeah, but it's not live-action, it's a cartoon. Both mediums work different that way.

Just as when a cartoon character gets a literal translation from cartoon to live-action...

I think 5 is too big. It still looks pretty good, but the eyes are just too big. Although I don't watch much anime, so maybe the larger ones are just out of my comfort zone.

Wow, I hate to criticize but that's the pic they used to advertise the show?! Tell me the series doesn't have this many messed up human features all the time!

That's the DVD cover (I assuming from the US since that anime never got release in the UK).
This was the ad that intrigue me into watching (this was back in the Cowboy Bebop era and before I had access to Youtube)-
I'm pretty sure the eyes size were inconsistent-

I don't have a problem with eye size in my anime. Although, interestingly enough, the #1 on that chart doesn't look very good to me. Got no problem with #9, though.

They say it's in the eyes of the beholder, but in the case of the bottom row, everything seems to be in the eyes of the beholden...

I'm fine with anything up to 6. Hell, I'm fine with 7 if it's done right. Anything more shouldn't have an entire show in that style though.

Overall I'm okay with all of them, assuming the bottom row is left for one of those in between commercial break chibi transition things some animes do.

If we're talking about what I can take seriously, then 5 is the limit, and 6 and up would be too difficult for me to really accept in a show that's trying to have a more dramatic/serious tone.

I think that's part of the reason why I couldn't take Koutoura-san seriously(besides me finding the show to be absolute shit), because the even in the few moments where it was legitimately trying to be serious(badly), the art style further hampered my ability to actually take them seriously.

But yeah, if it's just a sillier/fun anime like Lucky Star, then I'm perfectly fine with 6+ eyes... Well, 8 and 9 might still be a bit out there, and the show would pretty much have to be pure and utter unadulterated silliness in order for me to accept eyes that big. With Lucky Star I could at least be convinced to take the characters seriously in the few times(like once or twice?) when the show called for it with their eye sizes, but I don't think that could have happened with 8-9 eyes.

I'm OK with everything in 1-6, 7 is where the eyes are just too creepily huge. I don't like super huge eyes on things in the first place.

I became curious about other people's tolerance for eye size, after I tried to watch Azumanga Daioh.

I really enjoyed School Rumble, so I was pretty sure I would like the shows humor. I couldn't get past those eyes. Too unsettling.

None are too big, it's just a matter of aesthetics and theme.

Slayers are somewhere around 7 and it works fine. Others are at 9 and work even better. That said, making a serous and/or gory drama with those aesthetics would clash, but it does suit other types of products. So... go ahead, knock yourself out?
