They are ungrateful time-leeches that holds parents back.

Otherwise I don't have anything against them.

Money sucking pieces of shit that will ruin your mental and physical health over the course of 20 to 30 years.

Also, to people who say those who choose not to have children are selfish. It's morally wrong to have a child. How's that for a change?

oh god I hate them >.<
I've only been able to get along with a few, but they weren't all that young (youngest was about nine years) and they were all fairly precocious. Actually the nine year old one was pretty awesome, he introduced me to Hayao Miyazaki, but he was definitely an exception.

Some people either are too self centred or are too impatient to deal with kids. They don't know it, but they are missing out on something.
And you are missing out on all the free time, money, and lack of stress that we have. :) If that makes me self centered and impatient then by golly sign me up. Hell call me anything to want if it makes you feel better about yourself.
It may seem hard to believe now but trust me when you have a child you'll realise what really brings happiness in life, and it isn't money or free-time.
Ugh, if I had a penny...

Not planning on having kids. Maybe I will eventually settle down with someone, and maybe then I'll feel the need to start a family. But because of the whole being gay thing meaning it'll be quite a hassle I don't regard that a high possibility.

I imagine I'll want one (and only one) in about a decade or so, but the process by which they're made absolutely terrifies me. Not the sex - I mean pregnancy. When I think about the subject I feel cursed to have been born female. I'd much rather have sex and then let my partner deal with the baby-making, but alas, that is not within my biological capabilities.

Ya know, I've heard that so many times that it's utterly cliche at this point.

Sorry, but I'm going to have to miss out on that particularly brand of happiness since I'm getting that little snip surgery done next month to make sure it never happens.

Parents get so angry when you say that you dislike children and that you're happier without them. I don't go around telling parents "You'd be happier without children" but they certainly take it on themselves to tell me "You're not really happy unless you have children." I didn't offer my commentary on your life and I didn't ask for yours on mine. I'm certainly not going to give my opinion of parents because, if that's what you want to do then who the hell am I to tell you different? Just like who the hell are you to tell me differently?

So, in closing. No, I will not conform to your norm.
I'm sorry that you feel the need to mutilate yourself to prevent yourself from having children, anyway I personally am not angry at you for your choice, but instead pity you that you'll never have the chance to discover for yourself the joys of raising a child. The sad thing is that you'll probably live your entire life and eventually die never realising how much of life you missed. If you didn't want me to comment on your choice then you shouldn't have posted your opinion in this thread to begin with.

Edit: I've just realised that you are the OP, seriously if you don't want people going on at you because of your opinion why did you make this thread? What did you think was going to happen, everyone was going to agree with you?

I think they are often tiring and annoying, although you can get some who act more mature. I don't want any.

No strong feelings. What I do despise, however, is this sanctity we have built around the right to reproduce. It sickens me to read all the tear-jerking articles about forty-something women who conceive after a dozen IVF treatments; it's like humanity is collectively looking the other way when it comes to the issue of overpopulation. Why is it that most biological imperatives are frowned upon by society, with the sole exception of child-bearing?

I personally wouldn't have kids; I have occasionally felt that it would be nice to raise another human being with somebody that I love, but I managed to overcome the sentiment by remembering that it's just a series of codons interacting with one another. I wouldn't mind adopting, I guess. But that comes with several miles of red tape, seemingly designed to prevent you from taking care of those already in need in favour of adding another consumer to an already overcrowded planet.
Control yourselves, people. Take pride in being sufficiently intelligent to overcome these urges; it's what makes us different from animals. Stop behaving like carcinogenic cells.

Oh my various Gods will you please shut up already? Is it so hard for you to gasp the fact that certain people don't WANT to have a child? GOD you people and your "holier than thou" attitude infuriate me. I don't CARE about your child. I don't CARE what joy it brought to YOUR life. I don't WANT those joys. Keep them to yourself. I'm perfectly happy with my life the way it is and the same way I DON'T tell you how much of a drain having a child is the same way I expect you not to tell me how "wonderful" having a child is. Common fucking courtesy. Are you able of such a gesture or is this a one sided sort of thing? Keep your bullshit to yourself just like I keep mine to myself. You DON'T want to keep it to yourself? Guess what? I won't either. Here's a fun fact: Having a child is immoral.

Considering that my career is working with children, I suppose it is a safe assumption that I think they're pretty cool. As for having one or two or whatever, I'm case specific. There's like only one person I'm willing to take that venture with. lol!

Mutilating myself? Bravo! Bravo I say! You managed to put an extremely minor surgery, done by a doctor, one that doesn't even require pain killer, and shove it into the self mutilation category.

Ya know what. I'll just take the gloves off this one time because parents certainly don't hesitate to do so themselves when giving me their opinion on my life. I think parents are needy. While before children I'm sure you were miserable because you had no self worth. But hey, now you get to mold some mini-humans into what you want. I'm sure being able to relive your youth through your children mixed with the feeling of power you have over them brings you the happiness you were too weak to find on your own.

Sadly when you get older and your children are tired of seeing and smelling the death on you they'll shove you into a nursing home and do their best to forget that you exist.

I'm sure I did a thread like this but about children who play video games.

OT: As a child myself I actually do hate children. This is because they generally sit and play Call of Duty and scream down mics, Laugh at you if you play a different game (Halo, TF2, Bulletstorm) and give other more mature children a horrible name.

I'm sure you read that and picked out "As a child myself" and "Halo, TF2 and Bulletstorm". Yes I play these games, No I am not old enough, No I have never thought about going on killing sprees in real life (No pun intended if you can see it) and thats it really.

To summerise: Children who are immature, mic spam and play CoD give children who are mature, speak calmly and at normal tone and are in them selves at a mature enough level to play games at the 15 and 18 age level a incredibly bad name.

I also did not intend this to turn all gaming related, Sorry.

Excuse me, but this is a thread for discussion. If you don't want to discuss children, that's fine by me, just don't post in this thread. I'm having an interesting discussion with the OP which while somewhat tense hasn't quite lowered itself down that level yet. Also I fail to see how having a child is immoral, as without children the human race would die off very quickly. It is arguable that you could limit it to say 2 kids per family, but having no kids altogther would be a fast track to extinction.

Also fun fact for you: my child isn't actually biologically my own, she's my younger sister who while I am hugely grateful exists was no decision of mine to produce and who I care for out of choice because I'm a good big brother. Please don't make assumptions.

Your theory is interesting, and you do hit some good points, indeed any child is fun to be around and helps relieve my youth. However, I nor the vast majority of parents are not incapable of being happy without children, it simply enhances and gives our lives meaning. Also your last point, while that may happen in some families it doesn't happen in every single one, it didn't for mine and that's more stereotyping than anything else.

Who said I don't want to discuss children? I sure as hell didn't. What I did to is take offense to the fact that you "pity" those who do not want to have children. You asked for my opinion on children, I gave it.

Having a child contributes to overpopulation. Besides that, we've also got orphans. Whilst the option to adopt a child is there there is absolutely no justifiable reason to have a child.

Then she's not your child. She's your sister.

I bring this subject up because... well... I have a very strong and resolute opinion about children. One that almost always gets a glare or a reprimand from the older generations.

I don't like children. They grate on my nerves. I don't find them cute. Hell, I don't even find babies cute. With their wrinkly skin, under developed limbs, over sized heads and eyes they are freaky to me like little pink aliens. With the world population about to hit 7 billion I don't even see the point of children now. Thankfully my girlfriend feels even more strongly about this than I do. I'm certainly not the only one who feels this way. As nations develop their birth rates plunge as people are relieved of the social and religious pressure to pump out as many babies as possible. When given a choice free of pressures, many people choose to have fewer or no children at all.

My opinion goes against very set, and seldom questioned societal standards of children=happiness have lots of them. I get the "You're a monster!" look, particularly from older generations when I voice that I dislike children and will never have one.

"You're not going have children? You're selfish!"
It's my life, I can do with it as I please. I don't think it's even possible to be selfish against someone that doesn't even exist yet. If it means having more free time, freedom, and money then by golly call me selfish. Hell! Call me every name in the book of it makes ya feel better!

"So I guess you hated yourself when you were a child then eh?"
I never liked children, even when I was a child. I no longer like eating ice cream until I vomit, hiding under the sink, or watching Sailor Moon. People change as they get older. Why do I have to love something because I was once one of them? (Off topic. I use to LOVE Sailor Moon. But now I can't sit through 10 minutes of it without weeping "Why!? Why did I ever like this show!?")

"You're only seeing the bad stuff about it. You're missing out on all the love, attention, etc etc children can give you."
That's what I have a dog for.

i can't stand kids, and never, EVER want any of my own. they're annoying, and they drain your money away (i know this due to me currently draining my parent's money away)

also i think babies are repulsive, they're just puke & poop monsters if you ask me. i don't understand the 3000 "AWWWWWWW" noises that permeate the air whenever one appears.
