A lot of people can be corrupted or when given power they abuse it, however without law enforcement society would be a disaster.

I believe they're a necessary evil. Yes they can be a pain, yes they give us speeding tickets, tell us to keep moving, tell us to stop loitering, but theres a reason for it all. Imagine what life would be like if there WERENT police. Law and Order (beyond being a good show) is an important ideal within society. It keeps people in check and criminals (mostly) from commiting crimes.

No system is perfect, and law enforcement is no exception, however, its better to have a system that works most of the time, rather than no system at all.

I know corrupt cops and i know good cops, i know officers with 30 years on the job that have no real complaints, i know officers whove been on the job 6 months with a complaint sheet thats about as long as the bible. Yes, they have to be held to a higher station than civilians, but they still are HUMAN and humans make stupid decisions, stupid mistakes and so on.

This all said, im a Criminal Justice Major, and going to be a LEO. So what do i think? i think we strive to improve the system all we can (i smell IAB in my future :p), but remember that its only as good as the people who make it up, and remember that through all this, the motto is "To Protect and Serve"

Most cops I believe have good intentions. I just think most of them may be a little naive: they haven't noticed that in Britain, justice itself and the law have not been on speaking terms for quite some time now.
Justice, the Bill of Rights, laws, and the police over in the USA haven't really gotten along for a while either.

One reason to hate a specific group of cops

As of right now every record pertaining to the case, including the judge that filed the warrant has been ordered sealed by the sheriff's office.

EDIT:A US Marine with 2 combat tours has more than enough firearm control to be able to take down several of the officers if he really felt like it. He figured out too late that it was the police, and they seemed to overreact.

I believe MovieBob said it best. We live in a shitty world.

I invoke my alignment here and say "neutral good." I like the police and what they stand for but I don't always think that they are right.

I don't trust 'em. There's been too many investigations into systemic police corruption in my country (Australia) over the last few decades, not to mention all the (proven) cases of innocent people being fitted up by the filth. And they still have the nerve to ask the government for yet more power and less oversight! I wouldn't piss on an Aussie copper if he was on fire.
On the other hand I would trust most European police (with the exception of the UK plods, they're every bit as bad as our lot). From what I've heard, they seem to have a much better understanding of their role within the community, even if there are still a few bad apples here and there.

And here's some wise advice for everyone:

How good a policeforce is, is very dependant on exactly how they are trained, even an asshole can be a proper cop under the right conditions, training and control.
on the flip side, good cops can become bad if they are driven too hard, either in their personal lives or due to poor working conditions.

I saw on the news recently, 'two cocaine dealers were arrested' and shows 50 police officers (yes this is the exact amount) walking into the house to arrest the two guys. (I'm Australian) The news was praising this as some sort of great victory. What a joke, just shows how police are worried about total non-issues. Some of the money should be taken out of law enforcement and put into mental health services imo, I think this would be better for preventing crime before it starts. I also understand that it is a generalisation to say all cops are assholes(on a side note). Yes I know you need law enforcement but they seem to have too much time on their hands :/.

States and the monopoly of law & its enforcement is bullshit. Poly-centric law would be so much less corrupt.
Would be?

It was not and is not.

See: Nazi Polycratic State, Parts of Sub-Saharan Africa.
Thats not true poly-centric law, and not the only example of something close to it, take medieval Iceland for example.

All that seems to be is dividing up states into many smaller states. What's the point? It seems like it'd simply greatly increase bureaucracy and provide more opportunities for maltreatment, not less. It argues that laws need to be harmonised, which is what for the most part already happens. The USA has state laws and federal laws which differ, for example. How could you possibly enforce these laws if the theory follows that different people can subscribe to different legal systems? You'd end up making ignorance of the law a legitimate excuse for criminals. If people in the same area can subscribe to different police forces, it would be a logistical nightmare. If they can't, then you're just devolving it into mafia or warlord-like fiefdoms. How could one court settle disputes with another? There is no higher court, after all. Unless one is created, and then bam, you've got what you had before. What if someone simply refuses to settle a dispute by going to court? What if they just don't subscribe to any court?

I'm so sick of this idea that simply making something into a free market will magically solve all problems. It seems awfully plagued by the kind of 'Just World' ideology so omnipresent in the USA, and it does seem to be only the USA. Really grinds my gears. I can't be bothered to talk about this any more. I might look it up again in the future, but so far I'm far from persuaded.

Some do abuse their power but I can't really hate them as an organisation when the friendliest guy I know is a policeman.

Having a couple of mates in law enforcement I gotta say on the whole hats off to them, a lot of the really shit stuff the have to do the broader community has no idea. Attending fatal accidents and having to make reports and tell their loved ones, dealing with hysterical victims of crime, daily threats and abuse in certain areas from groups and individuals, been called to deal with mentally ill people in all sorts of bizzare scenarios, just to name a few.

Not to mention the mind numbing drudgery of investigation/detective work, it ain't like csi people.

I generally dislike police more so than your average citizen. The type of people who generally go into becoming cops, plus the culture and effect being one has on you, generally results in an asshole.

I used to get bothered by cops all the time when I was a teenager with long hair, but that wasn't a big deal as I was never doing anything I wasn't supposed to. Just a quick "what you up to?" and they'd be on their way.

Obviously they are needed in society in some form, but personally I've never been helped by them and have been hurt by them. When I was mugged at gun point and reported it, I was made to wait in an interrogation room and then questioned about it. There was never any follow up on that and it was basically the end of it.

And more annoyingly there was another incident where I was grabbed by several cops, choked, slammed into the ground and handcuffed after much twisting of my arms. I was then picked up and punched in the mouth. I never resisted in the slightest, and I had done ABSOLUTELY (I really can't stress this enough) nothing wrong. I wasn't arrested for anything, I wasn't charged, ticketed, warned, etc. I broke no law so what they did was legally assault, but having no witness plus the fact they could just claim I was obstructing justice in some way means I would have no case.

I love when people open up threads asking for opinions but don't give their own...

I feel that the Police are a necessary evil. They are occasionally useful, but on the whole, they get in the way of my fun. (Mainly speeding, I don't do much illegal things)

Like any group they have some bad eggs, but on the whole they're fine. I have noticed they seem to be less present then they were years back.

I wouldn't hesitate to call, but I am glad I have a pistol by my bed if it is ever needed. After all, I have heard enough horror stories of people dealing with the operators(not sending cops, not believing caller, sending cops to wrong location, or not answering).

edit: Post 666?!

"Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?" - Who will watch the watchmen?

If we bestow power onto ANYONE you will see corruption. Its a necessary evil of peace and order.
If we have a system where someone watches the police they will be corrupt and we will need a system for them too. Which in turn will be corrupt. You cant win. You have to accept it as a fact that you will always get some corrupt douches. Its human nature. I think peace and justice is worth some corruption. We can prevent that with vigilance.

I figured police here (Netherlands) was okay until I got beaten up by them last week for a very minor offence which didn't even require police intervention. Now I have a few months of recovery from peripheral neuropathy to look forward to in 3 out of 4 limbs. It hurts.

Pursuing legal options at the moment, but I have lost every single bit of respect for the police here. They only want an excuse to beat up people. Generally the wrong people.
