I just can't get myself to dog-ear a book. I hold them in too high a regard. So I either use a bookmark, or remember the stuff on the page.

I tend to use post it notes with the topic written on it, especially with my textbooks because if I need to look up a topic, it can take up a whole chapter. In those instances I mark the beginning and end of the chapter. I can't dog ear as it would be confusing if I had several dog ears in one book. When I read for pleasure, I tend to use stray bits of paper, often the receipt that I obtained when I first bought the book.

I primarily use a bookmark, I hate dog-earing a page. If I don't have an actual bookmark, I tear off a scrap of paper and use that as a bookmark. Or if, for whatever reason, I can't use a bookmark, I will write down the page number on the inside of my wrist. I strongly dislike writing in novels. It makes me feel like I know something the author doesn't about their own story. I will mark in books on philosophy or textbooks, usually my own take on what is being said or questions that it raises.

I remember it. It's not that hard. I used to fold the corners, but I stopped that bad habit years ago. I cringe now whenever someone does that to a poor, defenceless book.

I have a virtually infinite mind, so I just remember what page or chapter I was on. Not really, of course. But if I am really interested in a particular book (if I'm reading on my own accord I must be interested) I usually just stop at a chapter or page with a break and remember where I was. It works most of the time.

For my sins I dog ear my books, even library books. I know, I know, its bad to fold the corners of books that aren't even mine but I don't have time to always be scrambling 'round for a bit of scrap paper.

How do you mark your place in a book (the old-fashioned ink and paper kind)? Do you use a bookmark or do you dog-ear the page or use something else
