How do you pronounce Cthulhu anyways?
K-th-oo-l-hoo

I think. It's hard imagining how a creature's name is pronounced when it's described as "a mountain walked or stumbled."

If I recall Japanese properly, this is how it should go.

he-e-n-ta-i

which would be pronounced

hehn-ta-i

which would be closest to

hen-tie

As was said above, ei pronounces like ay because it is eh + i.

Japanese is broken down into syllables. In hiragana, hentai would literally be spelled "he-n-ta-i" (へんたい), which is pronounced hen-tie (or rather, like the word suggests, hen-tai. Like in "Taiwan"). If it was pronounced hen-tay, it would be spelled "he-n-te-i" (へんてい). You can pronounce it hen-tay if you want, but it is wrong, and if you say it in front of anyone who speaks Japanese they'll probably write you off as a dumb Westerner.

Personally I find the whole thing irrelevant. I would always prefer to get real action over watching cartoons go at it.

Hen-tie seems to be how the Japanese say it...

So guess what is right...

The people who made the word?

Soooooo...

Hen-Tie......

This reminds me of a time I pronounced Yaoi as Yowie. It was a slip of the tounge.

He-N-Tie
All Japanese characters are pronounced ending with five vowels. AH, EE, OO, EH, OH
It's really odd that yous aid this, because even though i know it's not right, probably. I say Hen-teh every once in awhile for no other reason than my tongue doesn't form hen-tay

Apparently it's pronounced hen-tay, I always thought it was hen tai but eh... why bother arguing about it. =P

Just ignore that first "th" and you're set.
There's more than one Lovecraft-approved pronunciation-approximation, but the ones I've usually seen considered "closest to correct" are along the lines of "kloo-hloo" (with some variation). These days, though, the vast majority of people seem to stick to "kuh-thoo-loo", which I'm totally fine with, because at least everyone knows what you're talking about if you say that. Heh.

It's hen-tie.

My friends and I discuss it a bit so proper pronunciation is necessary.
My friends discuss it quite a bit, so i was forced to learn how to pronounce it.

it's the first option. though let us note that, unlike some moron on the first page was unaware of, hentai only has ONE meaning, and should NOT be confused with "henshin" or "henge", both of which mean transform, only in different contexts. henge (or henkei if you preffer it that way) means the kind of transformation a Transformer does, while henshin is the Kamen Rider style of changing, i.e. metamorphoses into a half-grasshopper monster or using either a magical artifact or super-advanced machine to create a super-suit which usually covers all of your body unless you're a girl, in which case it's very unlikely that it will cover any more than a Japanese school uniform and trendy knee-high boots, and in that case, you're probably going to be in more hentai than any Kamen Rider by the time the second episode airs.

I actually had it right. It was yowie. Apparently some friends of mine used to pronounce the wrong way. I thought I was wrong.

ha, nice. not that i have any interest in the medium itself, it was just a curiosity of pronunciation. although the main topic at hand is exempt from the previous statement.
