Massive football/soccer fan here. I've always wondered why the Escapist doesn't have a running football thread or a fantasy league or something - always just assumed the interest wasn't there.

Love football, club and international (real football, not American Football) and I get into rugby whenever there are internationals, like the World Cup and the RBS 6 Nations, but I don't follow rugby clubs.
It's easier to get into sports if you have a team to support. If you just watch it as a neutral observer, it's no way near as compelling. Being at a Footy match, supporting your team and watching them play is another thing entirely.
To be fair, calling it soccer isn't that bad, as it's just an abbreviation of Association Football, which is actually the proper name for it.

The rest of the world calls football (soccer) football, in their own languages. I'd be interested, I know there was a fair bit of interest and footy related threads around the time of the World Cup, so the interest is there, it's just not often displayed perhaps.Snork Maiden said:

Because it's entertaining watching people who have such a high skill level play against others who are at that level of mastery. And to follow a team and have a vested interest in who wins. And to make brackets for tournaments and bet on them. Really, there are limitless reasons to like watching sports, but generally I only like watching faster paced sports (baseball is FUCKING BORING [to me]) but I absolutely love lacrosse, hockey, footbal, futbol, and to a certain extent basketball.Subbies said:

I play upfront for a five aside team, and quite like playing cricket and basketball. I find watching a lot of sport quite boring but I've gotten into watching football again recently.

Heh, that's a fair point. Champions League one would cover most countries, although I'd probably argue most people here are English/American so maybe the EPL would be good, since the MLS sucks. And I know nothing about itAinsley Bartlett said:

I think people get so mad about this joke because it straight up makes sense, the only times you use feet in football are for kickoff, field goal, PAT, and punts. The time the ball is on a foot during a game is about 1:99999 compared to it being in contact with hands. Don't think CL would work, people would only bother with players from the top teams and once the smaller teams went out you'd start getting players with a top score of 5 points for their whole team. Woah, show some love for the Serie A!
