ive held on to the belief that "smokers are jokers" all my life:)
many of my gamer friends however do smoke. i wud liken smoking to ethuthinasia cause you're killing yourself at the end of the day, albeit very very very very very very very slowly lol.
something usually drives people to take up the smoke, drugs or alcohol (in unhealthy amounts)

sometimes the promise of a little oblivion or a brief respite is a big temptation.

A note to anyone who has posted that smoking relaxes them: It only does that because you are addicted to nicotine. If you had never smoked at all you would be that relaxed all the time. Why pay someone to slowly kill you?
Darth is right, you know there's a narcotic effect because when you stop, your body let's you know exactly what pain it's been in.
Also, I get far more breaks when I'm a smoker, and the action of going outside and taking deep breaths has always been calming.

As for the 'smoking is euthanasia' joke: So is Caffeine, Sucrose, Driving, Alcohol, Head Banging, Eating Meat, Having Sex etc.etc.etc.
And let's face it, if you're snorting half of Colombia through your nose, you must be cool; or you can just go into rehab and everyone calls you brave.

If you're forced to go outside in the pouring rain and spark up a little LEGAL narcotic to get you through someone being a total idiot and people still resent you for daring to have a problem; I think there's a small chance we've got our priorities wrong.

I'm just waiting for Gordon Brown to bring out all the apartheid signs with "smoking" instead of "coloured".

Fact : Smokers donate about 30 million pounds to the NHS per year. Smokers use less than a million.

Nothing against smoking/smokers but I have/had been Asthmatic so I don't smoke but have no problem being around people currently smoking I usually sit/stand upwind or if it's not filling the room ...

P.S. Sorry you all lost the smoking section in certain public places that's total bull.

Anything can be a relaxent if it's a comforting activity but some like smoking just happen to have a chemical reaction to boot. Some ex-smokers can feel more relaxed just by holding an unlit cigarette to thier lips.

P.P.S. How many of you smokers have had a "Smoking is bad for you!" speech while smoking from a total stranger?

I used to smoke cigarettes, not excessively though. I used to do it while gaming but then again, I do just about anything while gaming (yes, that too).
Weed + gaming = good times but it gets... too comfortable. Why do anything else? So I quit both. I only miss the weed, and only sometimes.

yeah, just like the guys in al queda who tell the suicide bombers "you will go to(insert heavenly place which i forget the name of)if you complete this task and will get to bang 100 virgins" or something along those twisted, deluded lines.

i know it may be mean but i have no sympathy for those kind of people, i dont know what can happen to a person to drive them to those kind of things(minus probably a death of someone really close)but since i havent personally experienced any of those i cant really say.
the closest i can say ive ever gotten is when my ex broke up with me, it hurt alot but i didnt once think to smoke, drink, or do drugs. i can thank for my parents for my great upbringing and teaching me the dangers of them all, however i do drink, just not alot and not too many times a month.

i believe that the people who look to those things are weak really, they look for a crutch to lean on which they know is bad yet they let themselves get consumed by said addiction and then they wonder why things are so bad, when they've only made it worse on themselves and have themselves to blame.

man some of the things ive said in my posts today seem really harsh and im sure some people will take offence to them but at the end of the day you're the only one who has control of what you do. if you let your friends persuade you to do something just because its "cool"(peer pressure)then im sorry but you are stupid and have no independent thought whatsoever otherwise you would know better. and no i havent been in any of situations because people to me who suggest stupid shit like that arent really my "friends" and i drop them as quickly as a couple of 50lb weights.

When you've gotten down from your dear old horse and stopped looking down your nose at the rest of us that can't hope to fill your saintly footprints, you might want to look at how many people ring the Samaritans. Perhaps even, you would like to work in a job that doesn't provide you enough to live on and that you hate.
Or, perhaps you would care to look at ALMOST ALL OF THE POLITICIANS that run your country that drink, smoke and whore their way through life without giving a rats tail about how 'cool' they are.

If you are seriously linking a serious chemical addiction with religious brainwashing, then you'd be perfectly happy to provide a modest fee to allow those addicts to break free of it, wouldn't you?

No?

Well then, perhaps the idea that we are all capable of 'independent thought' means we can actually decide things by ourselves, and not just buy into the latest scare-mongering perpetrated BY PEOPLE WHO DO THESE SAME THINGS.

maybe im just weird, but i never buy smokes, but if someone pulls them out i might ask for one or be offered one, and i will except without hesitation, ive been doing this for well over a year, and ive never had any addiction symptoms, ive gone weeks without even seeing a smoke, and been completely fine...

No, never smoked myself, and to be honest I think it's a good thing, as most people who I know who DO smoke have been trying to quit for years. So, ya know, don't wanna dig my own grave.

Besides, it saves me money and allows me to be a little more gratuitous with fatty foods and still consider myself 'healthy'. Ya know, 3/4 bad habits not being done isn't bad.

Used to smoke cigarettes but my JKD instructor made me do Thai pad drills every class if saw me light up at the bus stop. There's officially no way to combine that kind of aerobic excercise with smoking more than a couple a day, plus the smoking ban and the prohibitive expense made it an easy choice.

I've given up buying, but make a "secondary tax" if a friend pulls out a pack.

Still like the odd J though - smoked that pretty steadily through uni and prefer it to alcohol on every front.

Shisha/Hookah pipes are nice too, but the smoking ban and British weather mean I don't do 'em much anymore.

Never smoked cigarettes but I'm tempted by pipes. I'm told they're barely cancerous if at all (source for support or disagreement would be appreciated) and, come on, pipes!
I don't know about cancerous (cancerocity?) but I had a friend in the 70's who smoked a pipe with a cherry scented tobacco that smelled heavenly. It still tasted like crap to the one smoking it, though.

I tried cigarettes in middle school and hell, I could suck on exhaust pipes for free. I'm glad I didn't pick it up though because out of eighteen of my parent's generation (parents, aunts, and uncles), there were four smokers. Three are now dead, two of lung cancer and one of complications from mouth cancer surgery following a heart attack. One smoker and all fourteen non-smokers are still alive.

What really pisses me off is when smokers say that they are unhappy about their smoking habbit but they just can't stop.

I really can't imagine that it is that damn hard.
Every time that I have been addicted to something, if I wanted to quit, I just quit. It's that easy. Just don't touch it anymore. If you still feel an urge to smoke, than have that smoke because it means that you're probably better off with it than without.
What really pisses ME off is when some sanctimonious ignoramus says something like that.

Think it's easy to quit smoking? Try it. You get yourself addicted then come back and see me. Surprisingly enough most smokers ARE unhappy about their habit but believe me it really is VERY difficult to escape. Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances known to humanity, it's more addictive than heroin, and it kills more people too. It makes you smell terrible, it's a waste of money, it shortens your life, makes exercise extremely difficult, causes diseases, cancers and heart failures and rots your teeth. Smoking is not an enjoyable activity, it's basically suffocation and yet... people go back and do it again and again.

If it really was 'just that easy' to quit, there would be no smokers.

Please forgive the rant, I happen to be trying to quit right now (inspired by this thread) and it most certainly isn't easy. I'm pretty stressed out so I'm sure you'll understand if i get a little annoyed by posts like that coming from non-smokers who have no idea what it's actually like to try giving up.

Peace

what kind of question...after visiting XBL for 20 minutes i guess that 99% of Gamers nowadays are 12-14 so they are too young and will in not smoke in the most cases.
I however, have turned legal to smoke twice (serriously, once it was 16, and when i reached 17, it was made 18 here, now im 18, woopee^^)and i do it with proud because i smoke relatively cheap cigarillos that dont give my country big amounts of tax...
