this is my response for every one who says that modern pokemons aren't creative or look stupid.
Fun, friendly, simple designs. Yep, thats what I liked about the original pokemon. The newest pokemon ARE over-designed and end up being a big mess of something that cant stick to one bloody type. And now they insult the original pokemon with all these crap new super evolutions and babies. In the old games, when a pokemon jumps out at me I think.. "Ah a horse, obviously fast. It has flames. Perfect! A fire type, just what I need!" In the new games I see a pokemon and think "Holy shit! What the hell is the fuzzy looking mess with that super cool glare and glowing red feet....."
Pokemon had limits and were therefore Pokemon, now they can be just about any random mesh of body parts =(
Pokemon has always taken the art style of contemporary Japanese Mascot characters, which is why say,
Ponyta has detailed knees and hair,(1990's) while Blitzle here has an unrealistic snout and crazy eyes. (2010's)
You could still look at that and go, "Ah a
horse,zebra, obviously fast. It has
flamesLightning bolts. Perfect!
A fire typeAn electric type, just what I need!"
And not to mention, pokemon was just going to have more freedom in designing pokemon when it went to GBA 'cause of the full-color possibilities. It was bound to be more wild.
But pokemon like Lepardas [http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Lepardas],Pendra [http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pendoraa_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29] or Drilbur [http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Drilbur_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29] aren't inheriently worse than, say, Persian, Pinsir and diglett, necessarily.
And need I remind you about pokemon like Jinx, Victreebel, lickatung, or Tangela? RBY had its fare share of bad designs, too...
