this is in comparison to the general population? WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY above average. If you've seen the stupidity I have you would probably think the same of yourself assuming you can dress yourself in the morning.
I totally agree, but without the over-shown-off WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY and trying-to-be-cool-no-caps-sentence.

Sorry, but I can't really put that any other way.

To throw modesty out the window for a moment, poeple are stupid. I've looked at the world from so many different angles, that I finally begin to understand the underlying, subtle principles of the world. I know two people who are much better at this than myself, my English teacher and Ben Croshaw. I now know what they're always talking about, and it makes me wise. It's fun, in a way. Everyone on the Escapist are potential-stuffed 'nerds' who have the power to use this wisdom. I urge you, use it.

Uncoolness aside, that was a boring but interesting (wha?) textwall o_O

Speaking of which, this post makes me feel like the jealousy bug has been on the loose for too long.

Ah the vanity of the Escapist. Not surprising that most people view themselves as smarter, even though, looking at the world today, they could be correct in saying so.

Just over 80% of people think that they are above 50%. Wow, collective Escapists, just wow. BTW I voted below average. I'm smart, but I'm terrible at applying my knowledge so that basically means I'm dumb.
I voted "considerably below average" because I am continually awed at the individual intellectual abilities of the people I meet in the world who know and instinctively understand things that are utterly baffling to me. The funny thing is that when the conversation turns to things I am well-versed in, they probably think the same thing about me.

Socrates: "True wisdom consists of knowing that you know nothing." (All we are is dust in the wind, dude.)
So it was So-Crates who first coined that phrase? I was always wondering which philosopher was responsible for that one and I was always too lazy to look it up. That is one of my favourite quotes because of how few people know just how true it is.

Compared to a majority of the students I am foreced to sit in a class with, I am a freaking genius.
I fear for your classmates.
They are called mistakes. Everyone makes them. Mine in this case was not doing a quick spell check.
Maybe everyone should not be so quick to point out spelling errors. I would say legible without real effort should be enough.

Then again maybe people here are having such a hard time struggling to comprehend things that the small mistakes can send them into a spiral of despair that lasts until the meaning finally dawns on them. Nah, probably a bunch of weirdos that feel better whenever they can point out the small mistakes others have made.

As far as the topic of the thread goes:

I am significantly smarter then most people I know. It just runs in the family. My father was a genius and while I do not feel that I am nearly as smart as that man was I make due. Now I could just have surrounded myself with the lowest common denominator my entire life, but would rather think I have a fairly good head on my shoulders. It makes me feel better about myself.

In terms academic terms, below average. That's all that matters really. I think more than the average person, but that doesn't do much except hinder enjoyment of life.

I'm a surgeon, so I hope for the sake of my patients, past present and future, that I'm above average.

I consider myself of just slightly above average intelligence. The main reasons being my IQ score, the amount of common sense I seem to possess and my letter marks in school (primary, secondary, or higher). I'm by no means a genius, nor am I retarded.

But I've always wondered if I was right. Maybe I'm just more egotistical than I thought.

That does sound familiar that a study found that the mean of a person's intelligence is, to that person, above average. Does anyone have any numbers for that?

But let's not pretend that an Escapist poll is a random sample of the population at large. As such, there's no reason to expect that the numbers in this poll should tend towards average. In fact, the only reason that comes to me as to why our poll wouldn't be an underestimate is that the findings of the study make certain amount of sense to me (in general, even given that our poll is not a random sample).

"Focus on your strengths," I guess. The average person may be of average intelligence, but you could also say that the average person likely possesses above average intelligence in certain areas. That sentiment, that "society allows and encourages specialization."

Above average but I'm certainly no genius.
Therefore, I chose "Slightly above average".

I've been accumulating random information on a variety of subjects all my life and I pick up academic knowledge pretty darn fast. Both of those combined lead me to believe that I'm a bit above average...though as I've gotten older, my laziness has started to counterbalance this.

I'm a very fast learner, with a high IQ... just don't have much common sense or social skills so I'm putting myself slightly above average.

Since you don't see many flame wars on this forum, I'd say most people are above average or more of normal intelligence.

I'd say just a cut above average, mainly due to reluctance to apply myself and study.
Although a teacher once asked my science class, who was doing the foundation exam and who was doing the higer exam. I put my hand up for the foundation and she was genuinely suprised.

I think my choice of paper had something to do with sitting next to the nintendo fanboy who wouldn't shut up for a single second.
