Way too hard to put simply. It all depends on what we're good at learning. My schooling is probably below average, but I pride my written English vocabulary and grammar (my speaking is fine, but general quietness atrophies my proficiency). Everything else that doesn't have to do with video games, I'm leaning below par.

If I compare myself to people who are stupid, very smart.
If I compare myself to smart people, very stupid.
If I compare myself with myself, about average.

So all of your poll options.
Can't argue with that logic.
OT: It depends what subject, I'm pretty good at math, but terrible at english, so I strove for math in my judgement (slightly above average).

I assume the point of the thread was to basically say, given anonymity, people will act as they think: Look - chances are none of you are above average, everyone just believes themselves to be smart due to our current society in which everyone is praised and told they are a genius for the slightest thing, where we over-exaggerate other peoples failing to make ourselves feel (and therefore believe) we are better, when in fact the chances are exceedingly likely your average.

It's just your egotistical view of the world. (regardless of social class and gender - which do play a part, but are irrelevant in this context as I propose the idea that the average people will nearly always find a way to make themselves believe they are above average).

What's amusing is the way people have described themselves - some have just stated that everyone else around them is an idiot, some point out specific skills (which, by their logic, they are average because I'm pretty sure there will be someone they consider inferior better than them at something), whilst others have used IQ despite all the evidence to suggest the number is meaningless. Heck, others have used specific examples - so what if you outsmarted someone once - I assume you'll have forgotten all those times you were outsmarted throughout your life, or you'll have thought up convenient excuses as to why that occurred...

considerable above average i know a lot about the world know how to survive (my car broke down in woods once and i had to walk around the fucking forest for 2 days) in the wild and in class when the professor asks a question im usally the one that sits there not doing anything while everyone lookes it up and when they tell me to look it up i tell them i already know tell them and then get a slap on the wrist for not partcipating

i guess partly its because i grew up rich so i had good schooling and i always had an 3.6 or above gpa despite never paying attention in class

For the definition: 'Smart' refers to rote or 'book' learning. If you can name all the Presidents in order, or can tell people what the top ten grossing movies are, then that's SMART

'Intelligence' is the ability to process knowledge. If you can explain something to someone well, that's intelligence. If you can mentally multiply any given 2 digit numbers with the speed of a calculator, that's intelligence.

The two can be had either separately or together. Many people have 'street-smarts' (ie: they've learnt how to read the 'street') without being too bright... and vice verse

Considerably above average. I'm cocky like that. But really, I can't wait to get out of high school and into university. I'll get to meet people that are more of my level (meaning they have more on their mind than FOOT-BAAAALLLLL!).
You've never visited a uni, have you?

He'd better head for one without a football program if that's what he wants.

Don't care about semantics I'm smart enough to secure work, pay my way in life and live a rather comfortable standard of living while still being able to hold a coherent discussion. Really what more do I need, pissing contests between volcabulary and who can memorise the most wikipedia passages mean nowt to me.

I used to think I was smarter than everyone else. Turns out I'm not. And that being smart is one of the least valuable things in having a happy life.

I'm a physics major, and given the reaction of anyone who's not in physics (or have a PhD) upon hearing that, I'm lead to believe that I'm slightly above average. I know a number of people smarter than me, and I also know a lot more people who are dumber than me. It might just be that the stupid ones stand out a lot more, making the average person seem dumber than they actually are.

Depending on the subject under discussion, I'm either the smartest or the dumbest person in the room. I can hold more numbers in my head than most people can count to and I'm a whiz at accounting and finance, but when it comes to literature and the arts, I'm barely a step above Bubba the NASCAR fan.

True story: When I was in fourth grade, I had to take an art class, and the teacher (who hadn't heard of my considerable math skills) looked at my drawings, saw that most finger-painting, paste-eating preschool versions of Ralph Wiggum have more art talent than I do (even as an adult this is still true), and sent a letter home to my mother saying "I think your son may be exhibiting signs of mental retardation. You may want to have him tested." My mother laughed and laughed and laughed...then she said something to the superintendent of schools and my art teacher found himself out of a job.

Compared to everyone else I've met, I'm Hannibal Lecter smart. However, I know thinking that is foolish, and I always think of this:
