No, you don't, and it really annoyed me how my school didn't even mention that there was a speech, much less show it.

Seriously, damn republicans my guess is the parents were a bunch of religious conservatives I don't hate Republicans but boy do I HATE uninformed Republicans you know those Christians who don't believe in seperation of church and state the kind who ban a book if two male characters are a little too close the creationists racists the kind who blame the game not the parent when some 5-year-old shoots himself after playing Halo and grabbing his dad's hunting rifle I hate those people and I hate even more how the school districts listen to them. My guess it was some of these people if I was in charge of the school district I would ignore them, you see I'll bet if John McCain had been elected they wouldn't have said anything. Seriously those people are the reason Europe makes fun of us so much.

This is absurd. I could *maybe* (and thats a MASSIVE maybe) understand if it was children under 10, who are fairly impressionable. But 17-19 year olds? By stopping a teenage boy or girl from watching the Prez is forcing them to conform to their parent's views, which we all know is a dangerous thing to do.

At that age they should have the right to choose whether they get to watch it. I'm 19 and oppose my mother's views on alot of things. It's led to alot of "interesting" debates, but that doesn't mean that I'm not allowed to conform to a certain political ideology.

Plus, what's stopping these kids from watching it on Youtube or somewhere like that? I assume by 17 a kid would know how to use google...

I pretty much believe its bullshit, not the permission slip, but the speach. It's just like (not seing the full thing) Stay in school, and help me help you, and this is the best country in the world(which its not) so we should act like it.

I acually want to see it, I just want to find every wrong thing Oboma says and just add it to my list. I kid I kid, I'm interested in seeing it, but I still think its full of bull.

judging from your experience, i'd say M.A.P.O are well on there way to being created.

EDIT: oh yeah i should say something on topic.

at this point, who gives a shit about what mother's concerned about brainwashing, while they try to brainwash there kids into believing that Obama is a Muslim trying to take down the American government. it's like trying to take a steak away from a starving dog. you might be able to get it out, but who knows how much it will hurt.

My brother's elementary school didn't even have the option. There was no speech at all. By the way, I live in Jersey which, in recent history, has been a blue state.

Elementary school students may not understand the speech, but that's not why they didn't watch anyway.

So I'm guessing that permission slips are needed to watch Nazi propaganda as well?

It's almost frightening (sorry, it actually IS genuinely frightening) watching the reactions from many Americans to Obama from the outside, especially when it comes to Healthcare - it takes five minutes to research the NHS, which, whilst not perfect, is something to be proud of. Do those people do any research aside from watching TV?

I don't understand how insurance companies deciding who to insure is any different from these supposed "Death Lists"...

If you want to teach your children certain values then that's all fine and good, but at least give them information on opposing viewpoints so that they have a balanced idea of the subject. Hiding the other side of an argument from them is propaganda in itself.

I'm of the opinion that the reaction is stone-cold insane, but what probably provoked this was the power-tripping bit of crazy the Obama mill ground out a short while ago with Hollywood celebrities pledging their support to Obama and specific favorite causes of his that aired in Utah or wherever. In other words, anyone paranoid in any sense about Obama has been given enough ammunition on this point prior to this to turn back the Mongol horde. Sure the administration will watch what they say NOW, but the previous DDR-esque propaganda for gradeschoolers means provoking Hatfields and McCoys together to fire from the hills no matter what he does in schools.
Where was this level of paranoia about Bush when he started eroding constitutional rights, deregulating the banks leading to your current economic woes, and used a national tragedy to destroy the fabric of habeus corpus and commit warcrimes, while one after another the members of his administration leave office due to scandals and lies?

I find skepticism to be highly dubious when it doesn't actually cut both ways.

Thank god I live in a country that puts its leadership under a microscope during good times and bad. If 9/11 happened here, the government would be overthrown for incompetance.

This is just sick. I'm sure the only reason Obama is so feared/hated is because of his race. After Bush, it certainly can't be a lack of charisma.

My friend has parents that are "that" kind of Republican. They complained endlessly about how Obama is going to socialize our children.
He watched the speech.
It was benign and inspiring.
He is embarrassed by his parents.
At least it seems my generation will know not judge things before they see it.

I would posit that it's because people in his own party think his race is an excuse to get away with anything as long as they can have him rubber-stamp it, decrying all things in opposition to him as racist and polarizing matters worse, while a few of those who really believed in change feel misled.
Then again, I'm apparently one of those evil racists.

These are young adults, and mommy's still holding their hand? What, do they monitor the news channels their kids watch, too?

How sad. I think us Canadians up here like Obama more than the Americans do, we all got to watch his speech. Very sad. Wanna trade? Stephen Harper may be a robot! *nudge nudge*

No, because I always had to watch Bush's speeches in school without the option not to. Why should it be any different now? Just because there's a Democrat in office? That's ridiculous and a total double-standard. It's the president speaking, which anyone should be allowed to watch regardless of whether they agree with what he's saying.
im confused, did bush ever do that? i dont recall ever having any choice to listen to him. i think that people should have the option to listen or not but if they do they shouldnt need a form, likewise they shouldnt need one to opt out. it just seems like a lot of unnecessary rumpus to raise over such a mundane topic..... and yes i just wanted to use "rumpus"
