This is ridiculous. When I was in high school, they played the GWB's speeches throughout the classrooms. Regardless if we turned off the TV monitor or turned down the volume, we didn't have to sign a permission slip. But racism is very prevalent. Not to say that it's a black or white thing, but it is. Close-mindedness is simply a pity. I bet you if McCain was in office, you guys wouldn't have to sign a permission slip.

And all the idiots that keep calling Pres. Obama a socialist or a nazi, probably need to go back to history class. A lot of people have misconstrued views and assume 1+1=yellow. Last time I checked, I still have free and democracy. Oh I'm sorry, because America's now run as if we were the USSR back in 1922. Man, people need to take their heads out of the asses and grow up.
OH give me a fucking break. REALLY? RACISM? Wow, people who throw out the racist cards are racist in and of themselves. It pretty much because he is a democrat and not because he is black. That is how people see it.

You really shouldn't need permission to watch him. ESPECIALLY if you're above the age of 16. Parents today are just really overprotective. They want to shelter their children from the world instead of allowing them to taste different aspects of life that appear to us every day.
The parents aren't overprotective, they just don't want their children hearing things that might contradict what the parents want them to.

At my middle school, we had to watch some of Bush's speeches as part of the morning announcement. There was no choice in it.
I am very sorry to hear that, I feel for you. My middle school made us watch a power point with some pictures of people jumping of the empire state building when the planes hit them. I really didn't want to see that.
My school sort of did that too, except that we had to watch the videos on normal sized TVs. Power point images seem somewhat worse.

I was told to not make sarcastic or hostile posts. I'm done with this thread then.

If you're old enough to vote (I'm not American so I may be wrong on the voting age) then you should be able to watch your leader speak without permission. Just seems silly to me.
Yes...why the hell should parents even think it's propaganda

Not only should you not need permission to watch a presidential address, everyone should have to watch. It's ridiculous that a significant section of the populace of the only superpower in the world (currently) has no idea what is going on in terms of government and don't even vote when they have the ability to.

Let the kids decide, really. 17 year olds usually already have some form of political opinion, so this doesn't make any sense. I guess those parents watched too much Fox News. Unless I'm mistaken, they were the ones to spout this garbage about propaganda.

He's our leader. It's our right as an American citizen to watch him. This country has gone to hell. We need permission to watch the President? What The fuck?

Yes. In the US, until you reach age 18, you have no legal right to make a decision for yourself. As such the school has no right to force you to watch something your parents might find objectionable, especially when it's direct academic merit is questionable.

That said, the uproar was absolutely silly. I hardly think "work hard and stay in school" are values we should fear, but rather are values that every parent worth a damn ought to try and instill in their kids. It's one of the more recent examples of the utter failure of discourse in the US, and I have to say that I'm actually more than a little sad that the culture of "make sure the other guy loses" has gone so far that people throw a fit when the president might dare to talk to their kids about values they probably would like their children to have. There is no longer discussion in American politics, just the din of hoarse, incompreshensible shouting fueled by ignorance, fear and malice.

If you're over 18 it's your choice
Under 18 then the permission slip idea works.

My mother actually told me that if I was still in High School (I graduated in 08) I would've had the day off on the day of Obama's speech. My mother is not racist. She is a republican and really gets on my case when I make fun of Sarah Palin (greatest thing was when we were going to the library as we were looking for a parking spot we get into an argument. This leads to her telling me I could walk home. It was only about 2 and a half miles so I undid my seat belt and opened the door [we were moving slowly enough for this to be safe.]. Just as I got my foot out the door she sped up. So glad I still had my butt in the seat so the only result was me calling her a crazy *****.) As for my political stance all current politicians are morons and until they start acting intelligent I will not respect them. Yes this does mean I don't respect Obama until he earns that respect.

I voted no, but it's vital to know whether you go to a public or private school.

If it's a public school, I firmly believe that the only people who should not be censored by local school boards/parental groups are elected officials. These politicians are ELECTED to represent the people: from local municipalities to the President.

I went to high school in a conservative district, and our local Representatives, who were Republicans, spoke to us on numerous occasions, with no reprocussions. Fortunately, when we were visited by a Democratic US Senator, none of the conservative parents protested. Both sides knew and agreed that it was important for us to formulate our own opinions, indenpendent of what our parents taught us. It's sad to see that this isn't occuring in public schools today.

As for Private schools: if you pay, they can teach, censor, or operate in any lawful manner they see fit. The only time that would change is if they accepted any public/state funds.

Since when did listening to the president become a bad thing? I thought Bush was a retard by choice but that didn't stop me from listening to his speeches. I enjoyed taking them apart and discussing them with friends.

Shit had I been alive for Nixon I'd of happily listened to him too and worked it all apart.

Strange. Whether he's/she's a genius or moron, there's nothing to lose and everything to gain by listening to whatever our current President is saying. It's always instructive in some fashion.

Now I feel like finding those parents and shipping them to Iran. They won't be ALLOWED to listen to the US president there.
