people are just dumb.

republicans had no problem with Reagan speaking to their children
They are very well-known for double standards; for instance, if I were to kidnap someone, bring them into my basement, and torture them, that's obviously brutality. But if the American government does it, it's national security. Guantanamo Bay, here's looking at you.

I think disallowing students to watch the President due to the color of his skin or his political platform (it's obviously one or the other, or both) is a very stupid idea for reasons already mentioned earlier in this thread.

dont folow american politics much.. only thing im gona say on this is that if your school is playing a video of whatever your president is saying then they should also play the video of any responces and counter arguments by any oposition he has so that every one gets a full picture..

THEN.

They should show the students what companies paid money in lobying to what parties and whether any significant shareholders on those companies had any interest in party or personal politics.

THEN.

They should show the family and social conections of any loby groups, companies involved, major shareholders and politicians.

THEN.

get the kids to write up a report on modern democracy.. so that every one gets a FULL picture.

No, not really. Many people are uneasy about schools promoting political speech of any kind, and I tend to agree with them. Maybe they went too far in this case, but there isn't really a big problem with not seeing the President speak. Many schools want desperately to avoid being labeled 'left wing' or 'liberal', and based on what happens when some parents get that idea, I can't say I blame them.

Of course not, of course the option should be there to not watch it, but that should be the student's choice, they're old enough for that.

Give them a choice by all means, but you don't need permission to be interested in the running of the country you live in. Although to be fair in England this would probably happen as well, not sure why you'd go see Brown

Maine seems to be the only sensible place in the world...

We, ourselves, had the choice to see or to not see it.

Also, didn't like 4 other presidents do this and nobody complained?

In Michigan?
I can see this happening in maybe Texas or Kentucky but Michigan?

It should be the opposite: you should have to watch the speech and if your parents are pants on head retarded they have to sign a permission slip excusing you from watching it.

What exactly do they think the president is going to brainwash you into doing: volunteering?

Don't let the kkk lobby the board of education.

i know that your classed as an adult in the US alot older than you are in the UK but that seems fucking spastic to me, so people who would be considered adults in most countrys need permission to watch a man who is quite possibly the greatest person of our generation speak?

dude your school is retarded /sypathy hug

Wow america, why make people who are all but adults still need their parents permission to watch the speech of your elected leader, this is just stupid, they can make up their own fucking minds!

It should have been opt-out rather than opt-in, but the objection was the same one that plenty of Democrats had about George W. Bush. No complaining about the lack of respect for the "oh so sacred office of the President", when we were just as douchey toward the former President

Holy crap... Where to begin?
You know what? I think I'll just let the more educated and less lazy escapists post on this issue.
All I'm going to say is let the kids watch on their own terms if they want to. Any objections related to "political indoctrination" is not only absurd but the very idea should be drug out into the street and shot.

Sigh...if only Britain was this contreversial.

Everyone's just jumped on the "Gordon sucks" bandwagon, and, though he hasn't done too well admittedlty, 90% of them have NO IDEA what he's done wrong. They're just suckers for the comedians (who are hilarious, and correct, but people don't listen to the reasons)
