Fuck yeah.

Fluff over exaggerates the weakness(or lack of in some cases) of armies. Guardsmen are infact the bravest in the universe. Seriously given a flak jacket and a laser Pointier would you honestly stand, fight, and die against unspeakable horrors? I bet most people of our world would ***** out and run like mad.
The Inquisitor leading my guardsmen makes double sure they don't puss out either. Seriously, these guys face such a horrible death from the front and their own leaders so they take the one that has a chance at ending in victory. Bravery and plain bravado. And big fucking guns.

btw, I definitely prefer the vanquisher :p

BTW was that a Mobile Infantryman getting run over by a Baneblade? Sounded like a muffled 'HEEELP! POWER RAN OUT ANDI CANT MOVE!"
I figured the bigger and louder one with more gunpowder would prove a point in itself.

I wouldn't know the sound, I burn them all before before baneblade gets a chance.

Seems to be alot of love for Imperial Guard and I can't tell if it's an underdog thing or people identifying alot better with those cowardly piss ants.

Well if I wanted an effective army then Starship Troopers is my pick.
If we were talking anything but the movie, I would agree with you. But the movie MI were grossly incompetent and pretty pathetic for effectiveness, all things considered. Only one fight out of the whole movie was anything less than a display of uselessness as men died horribly for the most trivial of gains, if even. And the one fight that wasn't a catastrophe resulted because of an accident and a bunch of people being pants on head retarded.

Movie MI suck. Thus, I go with IG.

Imperial Guard.

You get a flak jacket and a weapon that is pretty much just an angry flashlight, and you get sent against nightmarish horrors of the universe. There are bugs, like the starship troopers face (tyranids), but there are also hulking orcs, space-elves, and even bona-fide daemons.

Yeah, they have a record for getting slaughtered and running away, but these are unmodified humans with (usually) sub-par gear going up against things that would give chuck norris nightmares, sometimes things that can even eat their souls.

Those that don't run away, that charge up the ramp formed by their fallen comrade's bodies to take it to the enemies of mankind, those guys are the true heroes of the WH40k universe. And considering that the bugs pale in comparison to some of the horrors the Guard are expected to hold against, the starship-troopers haven't got jack on the good ol' IG.

Plus, Leman Russ tanks and Baneblades. Hang on, I felt a bump. Oh, nevermind, we just ran over a building. No big deal.

Rather go with the MI from the films. Why? Well, the Arachnids may kill you horribly and maybe even suck out your brains, and maybe the MI are hopelessly incompetent in any number of ways, but at least they don't have to worry about their opponents capturing them and brutally torturing them in ways we can't even imagine, or having their souls sucked out of their bodies like the Imperial Guard does.

Oh, yeah, and the IG isn't shy about using freaking tanks!

Depends.

Which is cooler? The Imperial Guard. Simply because they exist in the WH40K universe.

Which would I rather join? The Starship Troopers, because I'd actually have a chance to survive. When the shit hits the fan, billions of Imperial Guard can and will be sacrificed to ensure victory.
^This. Imperial Guard are cooler, but have a higher chance of suffering a fate worse than death. I would say the chances of death are equal for both IG and the MI, for both the Imperium and the Starship Troopers, but the chances for a fate far, far worse than death are astronomically higher for the Imperial Guard. As for which you would choose to be, the answer is obvious. Mobile Infantry, Starship Troopers. No one wants to suffer unimaginable pain for thousands of years as a Dark Eldar sacrifice. As for which one is cooler, Imperial Guard, easy.

The Imperial Guard without a doubt. As long as I'm not in the Death Corps of Kreig or Catachan divisions, I might actually survive, especially if I have an awesome and competent commander like Ibram Gaunt from the Tanith First and Only. And I get to use my username as a weapon, so there's that too.

For the god-Emperor of the Imperium and all of that nonsense.

Having seen the movie, MI has nothing on the guard. IG more than makes up for an excessive use of laser pointers, with an excessive use of overcompensatory vehicles.

(I see your Baneblade, and raise you a Hammerhead with a Railgun. Also I see your Commisar, and raise you one sniper drone. Tau'va )

Post scriptum.
I resent being referred to as blue space hippies...we are a theocratic communal aristocracy

Life gets better in the Mobile Infantry from the films, as retarded as their battle tactics are (seriously no armour or air support?) they do improve, by the end of 1 and 3 (funny that there never was a 2?), they have those awesome rifles and Marauder armour. Even in the middle of the first, they go from human wave to...less human wave. Plus it looks like a quick way to move through the ranks if you're lucky. Life just sucks for an Imperial Guard.

But the MI from the books are just plan awesome. Any sort of comparison against the Space Marines always ends up as a flame war. But lets just say it would be a hell of a fight between them.

But the pods have slight chance to malfunction causing the trooper to become trapped, send the pod out the wrong way, or worse. With an Astrates drop pod that thing is armored to the gills and i doubt a marine being trapped in his harness is as bad as a single man being trapped in a tomb he cannot escape. Oh and those things hemorrhage power like no other didn't they? I ought to buy that book the copy in our public library is ages old.(yo dawg i heard you like tombs; so i put you in an armored tomb inside a plastic tomb so you could lose all hope while you suffocate)
No that was only because the ship that was firing them had collided with another ship. The men who died in pods, we're waiting to be shot not suffering from some sort of malfunction.

The pods are fired as the ship enters the atmosphere (at the same speed as the planets rotation) and for everyone that has a Mobile Infantryman in it, theres several dummy pods that don't. These makes more targets for the enemy. The pods as they burn up actually shed radar blocking chaff show they're impossible to detect except by the naked eye. While the pod is still in the MI blows it open and performs a HALO jump with multiple schutes so he's never a target for long and then engages his jetpacks before landing to hit the ground literally flying. And they may or may not have been firing upon the enemy with HE and mini-nukes during their time.

The suits probably used a crapload of power doing extreme things, but they could also use them for hours to days conservately as they did in the last act. Probably, indefinitely with proper support. I guess in the grand scheme of things that's not a lot of time, but the whole point of the Mobile Infantry as Mobility, shock and awe, blitzkrieg, they could totally fucked up an entire planet and withdraw before they knew what happened.

Heh, a Mobile Infantryman deserves that if he's stupid enough to be within a mile of his enemies.

I've never played war hammer, but if their Imperial Guard are anything like the ones in oblivion then they got my vote.(seriously, those guys will chase you till the ends of the earth, communicate telepathically, and will keep attacking until you've paid the fine or paid with your blood)

I feel the need to point out the average life-span of an Imperial Guardsmen is 48 hours. We may not be as cool but the chance of dying or something worse is infinitely higher.

I choose Mobile Infantry, at least we get unisex showers!
[sub]For the record, the Mobile Infantry from the book would annihilate the Imperial Guard ;) Throw as many Baneblades as you want, we can- just do yourself a favour and read the book![/sub]

Hard choice, my heart says imperial Guard but i know that id survive a hell of a lot longer in Mobile Infantry.

On the one hand you face, chaos, Tau, Tyranid, Eldar, Ork, Necron, and daemons.

On the Other you face Bugs... bugs who are predominantly melee and your rifle has an absurd rate of fire ( and inexhaustable ammunition from what i see in the movies )

The Smart choice is Mobile infantry.... but then again you don't become a guardsman because you are smart!

FOR THE EMPEROR!

Imperial Guard, they are armed with the durable weapon in existance and have training that rivals and often excels modern militaries along with the military tactics develop from 20,000 years of warfare. If your lucky enough to be put in with the right unit, you can get your hands on some very useful toys, ranging for carapace armour, jump packs to everyone being equiped with bolters or hellguns. And if your really lucky, some plucky noble might want a personal bodyguard when hes put in command of the entire operation, sitting way back under the safety of his command cruiser. Or an Inquisitor might find you and recruit you, that normally goes pretty badly.
