I like the feeling of switching magazines. It's got a nice finality to it.

Empty magazine on enemy, reload as he falls dead.

Snipe several sentries, reload and move on.

Empty your magazine on a boss, take cover and reload before opening fire on them.

I think having to reload improves the flow of the game. It adds a small change that slightly breaks up the monotony of shooting stuff. And can open up a few tactics (run up to enemy as he reloads, shotgun him in face).

I've been wondering.
A lot of games offer infinite ammo as an unlockable reward. (this is not about cheats)
The two games I'll use as an example, are Saints Row 2 and Resident Evil 5.
---------

Both of those games reward constant play with infinite ammo:
Saints Row 2 gives you infinite ammo for completing certain challenges to grade 6
and Resi5 gives it you for fully upgrading a gun, then you must purchase it.
---------

But both games do Infinite Ammo differently.

Resi5, you have a bottomless magazine, you can fire your weapon forever and never reload.

In SR2, You're still abide by the law of the magazine, so you have to reload, but have an unlimited supply of them.
---------

So Escapists?
Which method of Infinite ammo do you prefer in games and why?
Feel free to mention what game does this best.
and even though it is not about cheats, don't be shy to include them.
My favourite "bottomless mag" is the grenade launcher in COD4.

It fires as fast as a machine gun!

You don't even have to tap the fire button, just hold it down and it fires faster than even the turret mounted grenade launchers you find riding shotgun on the helicopter. It has to be the most fun and most overpowered gun I have ever played in any game, especially how every enemy gets flung 20 feet by every explosion.

If I get infinite ammo, I want infinite ammo. Why do I still reload when I can't run out? It's not quite infinite then is it? It's infinite bullets with the constraint of clip size.
That's like the universe; it's infinite but you're constrained to it by the distance you can travel before you die.
It would be like that, provided when you died you came back to life and kept on going.

OT: I prefer unlimited ammo and having to reload.
Just feels better.

Unlimited ammunition is a nice convenience but i do like the small amount of strategy that comes from risking a reload in a fire fight. And besides, bottomless mags on some guns over balances them so much the rest of the game becomes easy mode any way (Double sawn-off shotguns from GTA:SA I'm looking at you.)

I just have a fetish for seeing Shotguns being reloaded, so I take the side of the infinite ammo with ending magazines.

i distinctly remember an occasion playing perfect dark on 64. there was a gun, the cyclone, with an alternative fire mode called "magazine discharge", whereby the gun starts firing and doesn't stop until it's empty (you cannot change weapons, it only stops if it runs out of ammo or you die). Now, once upon a time, i tried to combine this effect with the "bottomless pit" infinite ammo the cheats thoughtfully provided, just for shits and giggles

needless to say, once i pressed fire, i was fairly well screwed

I like having to reload--it's a basic tenet of shooter gameplay, and it means that you actually have to think/plan a little bit more than just 'SPRAE BULETTS AT BAD GAES'. A bottomless clip just gets boring for me after a little while.

Even with infinite ammo, I like the restraint of a limited magazine. That irked me about RE5. It's silly I know, but yea.

Infinite supply. Having to reload adds at least a little challenge if they're going to take away having to deal with ammo.

I will say, bottomless magazine (ITS CALLED A MAGAZINE NOT A CLIP YOU NOOBS)
Ordinarily I'd support making the distinction (if not in all caps) but it was pointed out to me "bottomless magazine" doesn't really make sense because the rounds would just fall out and even if they didn't they probably wouldn't have anything to load them; even with a better term like "infinite magazine" it's still just a concept that can't be realized.
On topic, Reach lets you use either, so I can just choose depending on how the specific game I'm playing is. I actually don't like bottomless clip mag a lot of the time because I wind up pressing the trigger 4-8 times a second and after a minute or two my hand hurts.

In a game with civilians and large quantities of enemies, a bottomless clip would be SO FUN! To spray the planet, but unlimited clips which contained limited rounds is more balanced and makes it more fun in the long run.

I like having to reload or have them heat up over time. I don't like being able to fire non-stop because that does feel kind of cheaty to me.

Infinite ammo usually means dicking around without any challenge/ meaningful opposition.

"Bottomless mags" allow for constant shooting....the very epitome of an absence of challenge/ meaningful opposition. With "Unlimited supply" there is at least the possibility of being punished for a badly timed reload (RE4...chainsaw guy).

I will say, bottomless magazine (ITS CALLED A MAGAZINE NOT A CLIP YOU NOOBS) can be a great deal of fun, especially with single shot weapons such as the Grenade launcher in CoD4. That was great fun, mowing down enemies with the grenade alone.
Clip is an accepted term for games and has been since the first reloading mechanic was implemented. It isn't the real world and not everyone is a gun nut/gives a shit.
well if you didn't give a shit you certainly jumped in on the side of calling them clips. That constitutes giving a shit. Just because it was used in early gaming doesn't mean it has to be true today, either. (can't think of an example. Too late at night after a long day of being sick for me)
I'm a gun nut and I give a shit about people thinking their surface knowledge of a subject somehow constitutes a reason to call others out for improper terminology.
Chill out guys.
This is not about the finer etiquette of weapon terminology.

Its about your preference in physics bending ammunition supply.
So put your differences aside and leave it. You are not proving anything apart from how childish you guys are.
I already mentioned my preference.

I commented on his comment, and also put forward my own opinion... then he retorted and I responded. It's a forum... it happens.

I'm more of an infinite supply kind of guy, mostly because I get bored really quickly if there's absolutely no challenge other than "keep pulling the trigger". The pause makes you a little more vulnerable, and I'm okay with that.
