Toronto must be the Britain of Canada
It's actually true that they called in the army. And the joke about "Snow, in Toronto. We're not making this up." Is a reference to a liberal attack ad which said that Stephen Harper wanted to increase the presence of soldiers in Canada "Soldiers. In our cities. In Canada. We're not making this up." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMsqEph7a8I
This is a rant about Canadian weather and how people in Toronto apparently don't know how to cope with it.
This is about people who crash into telephone poles yet refuse to wear winter tires.
Do these fairly aptly describe how things are in Britain?

I live in Hawaii, where it doesn't go below 70 or over 95 Fahrenheit. I personally don't give 2 shits about snow.

yes i'm extremely embarrassed by our lack of ability yo cope with a little bad weather.
our lack of ability to clear roads or run public transport because it snows in winter is appalling.
and to make it worse, in liverpool atleast, people drive right up your arse if you drive slow in these conditions

Ice and floods have been fucking us up in Ireland recently.

I dread to think of the two happening together...

Yes, because I am Brittanic.

College closed for me and I'm so jazzed although we have about 4 inches of snow so I suppose it is a bit rediculous that the Snow has that much effect on our country but I'm not compliaining.

And yes I embarassed by Britain's inadequecys, but not snow related ones.

I live in Utah. schools don't close unless theirs a foot of snow, IN AN HOUR! Mind you When I was living in Texas we would get a quarter inch and everything would close. after living in Utah for twelve years I found this amusing!

In the Netherlands if we get more than 5cm/2inch of snow the entire country grinds to a halt.

I'm going back to university on Saturday up in Leeds, and on Monday I have my first exam for this semester. And the snow is apparently so bad up there people are being advised to carry shovels in their vehicles so if the car gets stuck they can dig themselves out.

I'm just wondering if any exams will be cancelled or postponed if people can't make it to university because of the snow? Ah well, if so then it means more time to revise, right?

Texas needs a quarter inch? Pah! In Britain we need the weather man to say the word snow and we panic buy supplies and close all the roads.

The Netherlands here, and the entire country basically ground to a halt the week before Christmas due to 3 inches of snow. No trains or busses and half our freeways "broke" because they froze...

I live in Idaho and they use tractors to remove the snow up here. So when it snows a few inches or so it takes them at least a week to remove it. Terrible. If it snows a foot of snow we're screwed for awhile.

Now not that I haven't appreciated this hour lay in because universities across the UK are closed but I think that it's bloody laughable myself that every other country in the world that gets snow (As for as I know) can continue to function in anything but an actual Blizzard! We got about 2 1/2 inches of snow and every things stopped!
Annoying because I wanted to go to the library.
My question to you fellow escapists is this,
A If you're British are you embarrassed by our countries inadequacy and if you are not British do you laugh at us??
Dude, what do you expect?
We have a prime minister who's adamant about preaching about global warming so he simply refuses to believe that snow even exists - its like a cryptid to him.

So naturally, nothing gets done bar some crappy gritting of the motorways, and even then that fails.

In fairness, the Midlands has had a good few inches of snow, which is definitely more than normal. Fortunately uni doesn't start til next week so I still have a few days of playing Mass Effect and building snow demons in my garden.

I live in Ireland so yes we do stop and are basically in the same boat as Britain personally I think it is because stuff like this hardly ever happens so we're prepared for nothing.

You raise a good point....When I finally get my driving license I'm getting a monster snow truck.

A Sweden-based friend of mine was heading back to England for Christmas. He trudged through knee-high snow to get to the airport, only to find that his flight had been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions in the UK. (He made it in the end, fortunately.)

Meanwhile, a friend of mine in the US was snowed in for two days.

Nah, we had good winters then, and we kept going. If we were in a world war nowadays, our government, led by GLORIOUS LEADER GORDON BROWN, would surrender faster than the french.
