I grew up in Michigan, so lots of snow growing up... only remember a few snow days when we'd get like 3 or 4 feet in a night. I actually drove through a 6 foot snow drift one time, don't ever do that. Now I live on the west coast in Oregon... hahahaha they pretty much shut down for 2 inches and no one knows how to drive in snow... they gun it at stop lights... slam on breaks all the classic no no's.

ahh snow days...{sniff sniff} I wish those existed for us adults

I lived in Georgia for about seven years, and if snow could stick on the ground for more than five seconds everything closed down, people stocked up on milk and bread and prepared for the end of the world.

It brings Tennessee to a standstill, more specifically Smyrna and Murfreesboro, but not really the whole country. We get an inch and they bust out the snowplows and ice trucks.

Oh you brits.

-40 and I still walk an HOUR to college. Well, it's not -40 right now (only -20: pretty usual, nothing special) but it's happened and will happen again.

This thread has reminded me that Canadians are the best. At everything (or at least most likely to survive the impending climate change). Thanks, international community!

EDIT:: Oh, and it's been -46 this year and I still haven't busted out my winter jacket.

All the councils are running out of grit but there's supposidly more on the way. If uni's are closed then I hope to god mines closed for another 2 weeks so I can get my animation assessment done and on time! Shit I need to get binders for that.

We had LOADS of snow last night, enough to cover the trees and add another 6 inches on top of the snow on the shed roof...

Before christmas it was a bit like this maybe a bit better and the trains weren't cancelled up near Middlesbrough. But I'm guessing everywhere down south (south of where I am ;D) have all come to a standstill? Because of some snow.

Now not that I haven't appreciated this hour lay in because universities across the UK are closed but I think that it's bloody laughable myself that every other country in the world that gets snow (As for as I know) can continue to function in anything but an actual Blizzard! We got about 2 1/2 inches of snow and every things stopped!
Annoying because I wanted to go to the library.
My question to you fellow escapists is this,
A If you're British are you embarrassed by our countries inadequacy and if you are not British do you laugh at us??
Snow doesn't affect where I live because it just doesn't happen. Extreme heat is more likely to bring things to a standstill here. Got to 47C (116F) last summer.

I don't really laugh at Britain, I'm just jealous. If I went outside right now and big-ass sheets of ice were covering everything I'd be pretty happy about that and move my sleeping bag out there.

I get that but after you've almost broken you neck five times in about 1/4 of a mile you'd change your mind! (But I do prefer the cold to the hot)

I'm going back to university on Saturday up in Leeds, and on Monday I have my first exam for this semester. And the snow is apparently so bad up there people are being advised to carry shovels in their vehicles so if the car gets stuck they can dig themselves out.

I'm just wondering if any exams will be cancelled or postponed if people can't make it to university because of the snow? Ah well, if so then it means more time to revise, right?
I live in Leeds, it isn't too bad, its starting to melt a bit and the roads are clearing up now. The 'carrying a shovel in your car' thing is news to me! My sister goes to Leeds Met, and her exams weren't cancelled.

This thread makes me realise how much I want to see snow, and how much I hate Australia's 40 degree Celsius summers

My school closed, and Northamptonshire hasn't even really been hit. We have about 2 inches of snow compared to elsewhere, even in the UK

Gentlemen, Russia is laughing at us

I hate snow personally, but I'd hate 40C summers more. Frig, I can barely function when it hits 30C.

On the other hand, you get awesome lizards and frogs and stuff like that, don't you? About all there is to see around here are mosquitoes and deer. A moose if you're REALLY lucky, and coyotes if you're unlucky. For birds we've got magpies, the occasional robin, and the rare blue jay. If you go to a bigger city you'll see pigeons.

I basically described every animal you'll see around here; I still haven't seen a coyote with my own eyes (but they're definitely around). Man, I'm jealous.

Yeah, i think it's hilarious that the UK comes to a standstill, and i live here. I carry on as normal (Of course i didn't go to school like everyone else.) i've been everywhere i need to go today. I think the main reason britain comes to a standstill is because of the general public's attitude toward it, people are too afraid of it. If people just carried on like normal then it wouldn't be a problem.

Newcastle; an example of a city that can still function normally with a bit of snow.

Some of my friends live in Alberta Canada, they have - 50 days typically in the winter and have feet of snow drop , not inches. And they still keep going , even when the car won't start without a block heater since its that cold.
I live in southern ontario Canada , close to niagara falls. To give you an idea how much of a weather change you get in the area between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.
By Lake Erie since before christmas they have had over 5 feet of snow , in the middle has a few inches , lake ontario only got its first snow on the ground 4 days ago , currently theres about a foot on the ground. No school closings , and the roads in the area aren't plowed very well , the road infront of my house hasn't been plowed once yet.
It was so cold out the other day the back window in my car shattered when i closed the hatchback and i haven't had a window in it for a few days , still driving the thing around in this weather.

I live in the south of England, and I go to university even south-er. At the moment theres about 4-6 inches of snow outside, which gave me a hell of an experience last night.

I really didn't want to go out, but it was my friends birthday, so I made the effort. Eventually got into the city, with the bus crawling at 5 mph to avoid risk. Met up with my friends, had a few drinks, then we farted about in the snow (this was the fun part).

The not so fun part was when the bus got cancelled because of the snow, so I had to get a taxi home. And then the taxi was going to be a 30 minute wait, and they would charge me 50% extra.

So I walked. And it was fucking exhausting, because I was the only idiot out walking around in the 6 inch snow at half-past midnight, so it hadn't been compacted into a more easy to walk on experience. In fact, I couldn't see my feet for most of the walk, because they were constantly plowing through the white stuff.

And to add insult to injury, my ipod died about 10 minutes into the walk. So I had to do the fucking trek in silence.

This has turned into more of an FML than an actual on topic post...

But yeah. I'm glad our country gets brought to a standstill by snow, at the moment, because it means my family stayed home from work so I get to hang out with them today.

I wont be happy if its still fucked up by the weekend though, as I'm supposed to be heading back to uni, and I don't want miss my first week or something.

Here in Canadia, despite having vicious winters and frequent snowfall, still have a ton of trouble when things start to get cold. In my city its particularly bad as we had weather in the plusses well into December. Still, once it starts to seriously snow and the cold actually sets in things start to get screwed up, people drive like assholes, trains stop working and for some reason the city administration decides to start shutting down train stations for renovations.

Not really. The onlthing that happens that really annoys me is that every one start driving like 20 mph under the limit because SNOW IS ON THE SIDE OF THE FUCKING ROAD!!! Sorry but that really annoys me, like bad.
