Look what happened last time they put mario to sleep:
Give this man a cookie, stat.
Now, since I'm long gone from the console wars, I'll propose another "third" alternative that will not come to be: whatever consoles follow up the Wii and DS... no Mario games, period. No games based on he characters from the franchise, and while I'm at it, no easter eggs hidden in other games that even hint at Mario's continued existence. By the time those consoles need replacement, even if they bring out "Mario: more of the same crap you always expect", everyone (this means you) will be so overjoyed at his return that the fact that it's "more of the same" won't matter one bit. Assuming that's the winning strategy it seems to be, they could branch it out to include Zelda and Metroid, and switch off every new generation as to who sits out. Concentrate all that time off onto the return, and make it the launch title.
As if Nintendo needs me to tell them how to make more money.
