Mario's an Icon. Getting rid of him would be like assassinating the emperor of video games, which could in fact spark the flames of Console World War I.

I'm entirely in favor of Nintendo continuing to use Mario the way he was originally intended, as a hero of platform games. Mario Kart/Party/Strikers/whatever I can do without. But Super Mario Bros/World/64/Sunshine/Galaxy? Those are great games, and New Super Mario Bros. is one of my favorite DS games.

Nintendo has franchises. They milk those franchises for sequel after sequel. But I've yet to hear anyone say why that's any worse than Final Fantasy (and lord knows the Sephiroth-worshipping weeaboos sure love to spend money on remakes and extended-universe crap.)

... did you just call Mario the emperor of video games?

*laughs hysterically*
You bet your ass.

Can you think of a more popular video game Icon? Thought not.

Now, since I'm long gone from the console wars, I'll propose another "third" alternative that will not come to be: whatever consoles follow up the Wii and DS... no Mario games, period. No games based on he characters from the franchise, and while I'm at it, no easter eggs hidden in other games that even hint at Mario's continued existence. By the time those consoles need replacement, even if they bring out "Mario: more of the same crap you always expect", everyone (this means you) will be so overjoyed at his return that the fact that it's "more of the same" won't matter one bit. Assuming that's the winning strategy it seems to be, they could branch it out to include Zelda and Metroid, and switch off every new generation as to who sits out. Concentrate all that time off onto the return, and make it the launch title.

As if Nintendo needs me to tell them how to make more money.

In short yes.

But why stop at "putting him to sleep" he's not a dog he's a evil mascot of and equally evil company, I say death by blunt object or death by bad music.

Also, why is there an "other" choice. It is yes or no. You cannot sort of put him to sleep (which I said above is already too weak).
Because you could destroy all the spin off and only keep the core games, or something like that.

Other: I think it is time for him to hide out for a while and not be seen - and then come back in a way that is simply amazing like the transition from SNES -> Mario 64.

Playing Bowser would be awesome - and not in an RPG environment. Imagine a Bowser 64 type game where you're just making all kinds of havoc.

Mario is just too recognizable for him to fade away completely. He IS Nintendo.

He doesn't necessarily need to be put to sleep. He just needs a vacation. Disappear from the Gaming scene for a couple or maybe 10 years.

Note: If only Nintendo didn't release like a hundred Mario games a year, he wouldn't need to retire.

Death...by SNU-SNU! Or worse, by oonga-boonga!

If they stop making Mario Party and the Mario sports titles, I say, keep Mario. Mario Kart can stay. The rest can go to hell for all i care. Milking a franchise is a stupid thing.

Yeah, I agree with what a lot of other people are saying in that the spin-offs should die but retain the core titles. Mario games are iconic of gaming and if they were taken away I think the young of today would miss out on a great game franchise.

I'd like to have a sought of revision of the franchise... It turns out that Mario Mario is actually a heartless bastard who kills innocent turtles who are an ENDANGERED SPECIE and black midget leapers (Goombas), and for what reason? TO "SCORE" he finds it sexually ammusing. How he constantly rescues the princess? He is secretly working down the Mushroom Kingdom by having them dependent on him and he will then sieze the power...
As for back story Mario had a horrible child hood. As a baby he often got attacked by paratroopers and his only guardian was a dinosaur... He spent most of his early stages crying... In his middle ages he was exposed to a rare breed of flower that game him the ability to shoot fire balls out of his hands. He then got hooked on Mushrooms, mainly the red ones bu he preferred the green ones (THE POISONOUS ONES)
