I won't say there isn't a story, but less exposition is certainly good.
for what it is, a repeatable multiplayer experience, the last thing you want is repeated set pieces.

Story might get in the way as they add more and more campaigns. It might be a little depressing that Bill, Zoey, Francis, and Louis have to fight zombies for the rest of time, occasionally in very strange, ugly, and badly designed places.

its nice to feel that ur going throught all this zombie hord killing for a purpose, specially on the final levels when u have to run for that boat or helicopter or whatever, and ur friends r right behind u, and when u do escape u feel this feeling of achivment.

I think Valve made a smart move by omitting any type of complex storyline. Left 4 Dead was designed with replayability in mind, and lengthy cutscenes or any similar game mechanic would make the game somewhat monotonous.

If you're dying for a bit more background information, you can glean a little bit from an early press release on the Steam forum:

For a story-crazed RPer like myself, I can honestly say that L4D does brilliantly without a complex plot, and that adding one would likely only slow it down. I like the current plot of, "You are here, zombies over there, KILL THEY ASS".
