Love isn't something that can be perceived with words and a two slot poll, or even if you used a eight slot poll.
Love is any of a number of emotions and experiences related to a sense of strong affection and attachment. The word love can refer to a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes, ranging from generic pleasure ("I loved that meal") to intense interpersonal attraction ("I love my boyfriend"). This diversity of uses and meanings, combined with the complexity of the feelings involved, makes love unusually difficult to consistently define, even compared to other emotional states.

Hmmmmm, it seems that the definition is that love isn't very rigid.

It's easier to deal with what you already know. So I would say that being similar is a closer bet to achieving love.

I don't think that interests matter as much as general personality and attitude. Two people who like completely different things can work as long as they both have similar outlooks on the world and are able to have a good time with each other.

I struggle with girls who are like me (not physicially obviously, no girls look like me, or at least, I hope not :S). I tend to be a tad agressive and, at times, a little controlling. A relationship doesn't work so well with two dominating personalities.

The true answer is ≈≈. They should be similar, but not quite the same.

Its good to be similar, because you have stuff in common, but not exactly the same, because that's just boring.

There are far too many personality parameters for someone to really be 'opposite' or 'the same'.
There can be differences in initial impressions and the most obvious characteristics, but once someone gets seriously into a relationship they'll pretty quickly learn if they've made the right decision or not by choosing someone similar or different (hopefully).

I would rather not talk to somone I have nothing in common with. I just think that would end in a fight.

It doesn't matter on either
I was in a relationship for 3 years and I am a jock she was a band geek. we are like totally opposite but after 3 years thing were didn't get along so we broke up. now I'm dating some one almost exactly like me. but its not a better relationship.
Its just how you get along with them and such

I didn't vote but I'm putting in my opinion. ++ and +- is a little too...hmmm...shall I say, non descriptive of what real relationships are about?

shouldn't it be more like: +++++----+++--+-+- or +-++---+++--+-?

I think ++ would be more suitable for love. I know I would want a girl similar to me.

Both are far too simplistic.

Love in and of it's very nature are incredibly complex and dynamic, trying to define it under such terms is impossible.

To be blunt, love is complicated.

In my opinion:

Interests: ++
Personalities: +-

You want to have things in common to create a foundation for your relationship, so that you have things to do together. However, I think personalities should be opposite because people tend to get along best with their foils. I'm not talking about hanging out with large groups, I'm talking about long friendships and relationships. This is true at least in my experience.

That makes sense but, again, it's not so easily categorized... for the personality bit anyways. I'm shy and get along with quieter people best. Less quiet people are fun too but super outgoing ends up scaring me a bit lol I get kinda overwhelmed.

I don't think everything needs to be the same, just not completely opposite-like. I mean, with my friends we're the same in some aspects then completely different in others. Same interests but mix and match personalities.

So... it's good to be similar but it's also good to be different? Balance is nicest, I think, but that's just me. I'm sure it varies from person to person :) but complete opposite sounds destined for failure unless the stars align and everything's just right. Or something.

Of course, people shouldn't be completely identical in their interests, but I think similarity is still the better way to go in the long run than opposites.
