Haven't played Red Dead yet. I'll get to that in a few months. When the major problems should be fixed.

I don't know. So far I say ME2 should be game of the year. But we'll see if I still think that when the year is over.

I'll probably change my vote to Modnation Racers when I get it in the near future though.
Because if the game didn't change much since the beta, then hell yeah I hope it wins.

I completed the story on Red Dead Redemption earlier today and as much as the game rocks my vote still goes for Mass Effect 2. RPG's are my favourite gaming Genre and Mass Effect 1&2 still remain 2 of the best games i have ever played.

Wow such a great game. I haven't even scratched the surface yet. I loved Mass Effect 2 and I still think it's the best game so far this year but RDR is so much damn fun. It could work out better than ME2.

I spend hours and hours last night just hunting animals and treasure hunting and didn't get bored once. If you can spend a lot of time doing little jobs like this and find yourself just riding around on your horse just for the fun of it for ages then that's a sign of a great game to me.
Ok, so I definitely just wrote a nice, healthy response to your post detailing why I think neither game will garner such an honor and that there's plenty of other games out there that are more likely to win (however, I noted that ME2 will be in the running; not RDR for it's overly repetitive game play, and monotone story telling) but then it got deleted some how! so to sum it up... Other more likely games include The Last Guardian, Mod Nation Racers, Crysis 2, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and I'm sure some others are out there. However, I am very adamantly against RDR, and frankly think that ME2 is the weakest of the prospective GOTY's.

Also, I feel like the OT is a 360 user... big time, haha.
Yeah I'm a 360 user but also PC. I don't play my Wii much but will probably give Mario a go. Mario will definitely be up there for GOTY. Not a PS3 fan at all.

Seriously? The year isn't even half over and you're trying to determine the game of the year?

Come on, So many games are still to come.

OT:
Mass Effect 2 over Red Dead Redemption, though I've heard great things about RDR, I have yet to play it, but in 6 months when it's likely going to see a PC release, I'll hop right on it.

Neither. Portal 2 will take the GOTY award handily.

All kidding aside (not really), it's way too early to be debating which will take Game of the Year. (a pointless award anyway as any given publication gives it to different games) Not to mention there are quite a few very high profile titles coming out this year. Alan Wake, Halo Reach, Brink, APB, and Portal 2, to name a few.

*posted after voting* Ha! My vote puts it at a tie! Also, I just beat Mass Effect 2 today, and though I like the game... not GotY material in my opinion. Certainly, a great game... but there wasn't really anything that grabbed me and pulled me into the game. All it really was was "Talk talk, shoot, talk about shooting after shooting, talk, talk, MIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGG, talk, shoot, alien sex scene, shoot, talk , talk, talk... etc..."

Nothing too impressive.

It has to be Mass Effect 2. I love Red Dead but Mass Effect took everything that was good about the first game and made it a whole lot better.

And the part where you had to navigate around the Normandy using Joker was just an epic piece of gaming.

Mass Effect 2 hands down. The only thing that would seal the deal even further is right at the end, Wrex wearing a top hat and monocle holding a tea cup, Credits

I don't think there is any doubt that these two games will be strong GOTY contenders. I'm just curious to see peoples thoughts on which of these two they liked more. I'm torn between them so I just wanted to see other people's thoughts.

My vote so far goes to Mass Effect 2. RDR is a great game but it has loads of issues (you can7t compare gun stats, you can't tell anything about your current horse including how fast it is, you can't skip animations, controls can be wonky, cover system can be glitchy, etc).

Mass Effect 2 is simply more polished in just about every way.

Even though Mario Galaxy 2 is GOTY (yes, one of my good friends is a filthy, soulless pirate) for me, RDR is the better game of these two.

But seriously SMG2 = utter genius. The most complete platformer I've ever played, sequel or no sequel.

Not that it will ever make it, but my vote goes to Super Mario Galaxy 2. Though of the two, RDR seems the more likely choice. Though, since it's only May, and Crysis 2, Fallout: New Vegas and CoD: Black Ops have yet to produce their stance, it's hard to say. But we have several strong candidates so far, so that's phenomenal.

I've deliberated over this myself for the last few days. Both games are excellently presented, well acted, immersive, engrossing and head and shoulders above any other game that's come out this year.

However, only one of them allows me to truely shape my interactions with those around me and for that Mass Effect 2 just nudges in front.

That said both are significantly different enough to enjoy pride of place next to each other at the top of the heap. Bless.

Deadly Premonition!

Actually, I'm getting my hopes up for New Vegas. But so far it's ME2.

I still loved DP though.
