No. It is, in fact, unracist. This is, I believe, one of the first games to focus on a minority being zombies and mindless. While I wouldn't call it "progressive", it almost deserves that title.

Edit: Just a note to everyone sayign that the people should be black because it takes place in Africa; Africa is (or at least was) primary white in some places (like South Africa). Just saying. Please don't flay me.

No, not at all. Just because a game has someone of a different skin color, doesn't make it racist.

No, but it still does feel kinda unerving to be some well equipped white guy massacring what appears to be an under developed African village. Sure they're zombies, but they still talk and use weapons and recoil in pain, I mean that just feels wierd, same goes for Resident Evil 4. That said, I must have beaten Resident Evil 4 atleast five times. That game dominates.

If there was an option to put a white sheet over your head then I'd speculate that this might indeed carry a racial tone of some sort, however this is not the case.

I concur.

I find it funny how everyone who posted in this says its not racist. Even though someone or a few someones voted that it is. Some people are just afraid to say what they believe in.

Anywho...its not racist.

As a side note I hope they can effectively use the African setting as well as they used Spain's. I thought Salazar's Castle was up there with the Spencer Mansion and the Raccoon City Police Department as the best locations in the series thus far.

Not exactly, I'm pretty sure South Africa was always primarily black with white leaders. That's why it was such a big deal when Nelson Mandela got elected.

RE5 is probably one of the least racist games, surprising given Japan's decidedly STELLAR reputation for understanding races and race relations. But I'll not harp on that, it's done to death.

I'd say that saying RE5 is racist is more likely a reaction to a number of problems in society rather than with the game itself. There are still problems, real or perceived depending on which side of the debate you fall, that have created a instinctual reaction to anything that even seems to be overtly wearing the skin of racism.

No it's not racist. Like Yahtzee said in one of his reviews, just wait till they do something insanely racist before everyone forms a mob.

The game is only rascist if you make a point of exemplifying the racial differences. Basically, it's like the episode of South Park on racism: If you make a big deal about them being black zombies, then you're discriminating. Chris Redfield has killed off many white people before RE5 was ever in pre-production. If you raise a big deal about black people being the main antagonists in a game, then there is no equality. The main ideal of equality is that everyone is treated the same! The big issue isn't the fact that black people are the enemies, it's the fact that a white man is killing black men.

No, it isn't racist. Killing an African enemy because they're African is racist, but to the best of my knowledge the enemies are infected with something that makes them hostile towards Chris, which is why he needs to kill them.

This whole racism business wouldn't have happened if Chris was shooting up a village of white people.

A lot of people will make certain things racist by looking at them from a stupid point of view. Example: In Jesus Christ Superstar, people found the movie to be racist because Judas was played by a black man. This is not racism, if anything it is an example that different races and cultures are being accepted.
If the Resident Evil 5 zombies were all white then most likely nobody would find it racist with the huge amount of ignorant people that preach if you hit a different skinned person, it is a hate crime. Wouldn't be Africa if there were no Africans now would it? More ranting initiated!

there undead... as soon as something becomes Undead.. that trys to kill you, its ok

if your Grandma became a Zombie and treid to Eat your arm, you would and Should hit her in the head with a frying pan or other close by blunt object, rather then debate if its morally Questionable to do so

I don't remember hearing an outcry when a swarthy Latin American man, who was obviously not legally in this country, ran around a small Midwestern town gunning down white people with an assault rifle with an insanely large magazine.

But hey, that was Carlos.

There's racism almost everywhere if you look hard enough. But, you know, if you're looking that hard, maybe you're the racist one?
