I say yes they are metal and I like most of their songs. Some are bad though, but from I pretty much like all the songs from the last two albums and most of my musical taste lies in metal/rock.

Metal??? It's barely even music.

EDIT: Sorry, that was hardly a legitimate response. No, Slipknot is a band that relies on gimmicks and their image to garner attention, rather than actually write music that stands out in any discernible way. They're the Insane Clown Posse of music.

if you want METAL, listen to some Behemoth. They're the band Slipknot wishes they were.

I actually find that their music stands out a lot more than most metal.

Just saw the video for "Conquer All". It's pretty good. I like the guitar work more than anything else. Can't see how Slipknot would want to be them, though.

People say that Slipknot fans haven't listened to metal outside of Slipknot, but I listen to everything from Iron Maiden to Cannibal Corpse, and I gotta say, I don't know what said people are talking about.

Look, you like Slipknot. Congratulations.

If you think they're metal, then guess what? They're metal.

If you're looking for validation for your opinions, the internet is the wrong place to look. Except for maybe the Slipknot fan forum. You'd probably have a lot more luck there.

Lesse, it's technically nu-metal, but every metalhead worth their salt knows that nu-metal isn't metal at all.

Here is an example of what (Death) metal sounds like:

Fuck yes I love that song. The beginning is the only thing I can play on bass lol

It seems like a lot of people who are into metal started out listening to Slipknot when they were teenagers. I listened to Brutal Truth and Cryptopsy when I was 12 so I don't have any way of understanding people who like this crap. It's metal, yes. But it's really shitty metal with a bunch of unneeded members you never hear.

I agree, and I'm not gonna lie: I started out with Slipknot, moved to Slayer, and then on to all different types of metal. I regret listening to them, but if I never had, I wouldn't be interested in the genre at all.

In general the word 'metal' just refers to dissonant music in a rock'n'roll song structure.
I mean Behemoth and AC/DC are both considered metal, why not Slipknot?

Coming from someone who listens to quite literally every subgenre of metal I don't see what the problem is.

Slipknot is nu metal.
Despite the name, nu metal technically isn't considered a subgenre of metal. Glam rock, once again despite the name, is considered a subgenre of metal.

Sorry folks. The non metal classification came from nu metal's roots. It's a blend of grunge and rap, both of which aren't metal. Grunge is essentially alternate rock with "heavy" downtuned guitars. Nu metal is grunge with rap on top.

I've listened to my fair share of shitty metal (see: every goregrind band) and I regret it but listening to shitty music can sometimes let you respect other music more.

What I find interesting is that on another poll I saw, the majority of Escapists who did the poll were Slipknot fans, and that's not reflected in this thread for some reason...

Definition wise yea they do. But I still don't like them. There nothing new and there nothing orginal. There image has been used over and over again by Glam rockers and the only reason that they have any historcal refrence is becuase they were one of the first metal bands to feature a DJ as a permenant band member.
