Yes, in my opinion. They got me into metal, and whilst I'm not as big a fan as I used to be, I still like them.

And I hate it when people call Slipknot fans "posers" or "not really metal", because there's no one amazing type of metal in the world. Everyone's a fan of what they like.

And yes, I do listen to "proper" metal, not only nu-metal.

I remember I used to like Slipknot, hearing them now I can't imagine why. This stuff is a step above Killswitch, a band that basically sounds identical to 500 other "metal bands".

At the Gates
Cannibal Corpse
Dying Fetus
Emperor

Are variations of metal I'd say, then again I used to think my favorite band (Vision of Disorder) was metal and it's apparently "New York Hardcore" so there goes any credibility I have haha, oh well. I know little on the technical details about musics genres but this Slipknot doesn't sound like it qualifies, then again that's my musically ignorant opinion.

Here is an example of what (Death) metal sounds like:

<Cryptopsy - Phobophile>
Fuck yes I love that song. The beginning is the only thing I can play on bass lol

It seems like a lot of people who are into metal started out listening to Slipknot when they were teenagers. I listened to Brutal Truth and Cryptopsy when I was 12 so I don't have any way of understanding people who like this crap. It's metal, yes. But it's really shitty metal with a bunch of unneeded members you never hear.
I agree, and I'm not gonna lie: I started out with Slipknot, moved to Slayer, and then on to all different types of metal. I regret listening to them, but if I never had, I wouldn't be interested in the genre at all.
I've listened to my fair share of shitty metal (see: every goregrind band) and I regret it but listening to shitty music can sometimes let you respect other music more.
It's true that starting off on Slipknot has really led me to appreciate talent. That's a really good point.

Also, there are a select few grind bands that aren't shitty. Carcass definitely comes to mind, and to a lesser extent, Lord Gore.

Metal is and always has been a varied genre. 'Nuff said.
While that may be true, you have to understand where metalheads like me are coming from. The arguments about Slipknot and Killswitch persist simply because people new to the genre insist that they're listening to "metal". The truth is, it's nowhere near to being on the same tier.

It sounds like elitism, but to be honest, that's only about half of it. Musicianship and anti-commercialism, as well as culture factor heavily into "true metal" to set it apart and above nu-metal and other lesser genres.

My brother always says Slipknot is musical garbage.

This video made me feel the same way.
Explain what's garbage about it?
It follows a generic heavy verse/melodic chorus pattern, has no memorable melody, and its very bland. There's much better high energy bands out there than Slipknot, I can tell you that for sure.

Also, I hear a lot of people saying that they "grew out of Slipknot"; what's that all about?
This is what happened to me, when I was 14-15 I was right into Slipknot, Disturbed, Linkin Park and Cradle of Filth. Once I hit about 17 I started to listen to about 100x more music, not just metal but all kinds, and as soon as I found better stuff out there I stopped listening to those bands. I've seen this happen to a lot of my friends, and to be honest, I'm not sure why.

All I know is I giggle a little whenever I see a 20+ year old in a slipknot tshirt.

kinda like weed is considered a gateway drug,
slipknot is like gateway metal.
its cool in jr. high and high school but eventually you grow out of it and get into much heavier shit that makes your parents wonder where they went wrong in raising you.

Metal, pop, rap, R&fuckingB, who gives a shit. Genres are for people who feel the need to describe what they listen to and what isn't part of their listening experience.
It's music. Done. Game over man. If you don't like it, go cry about how its ruining a genre or someshit.

Personally, I enjoy this type of music. Good pace, angry messages, its a good band when you play paintball or destructive video games. My unit sometimes plays music of it's like during or before training exercises to get us into a more frenzied state.

Yes, slipknot are definitely metal, I say that they're more metal than many other bands who claim to be are, i.e bring me the horizon or parkway drive

The first point: Only for a couple songs. Second: Maybe for you, but their songs are stuck in my head all the freaking time. Third: I've listened to a lot of them, and your opinion on the matter is not shared.

Nu-Metal is not a subgenre of metal; neither is Glam/Hair Metal. There is a difference between those two (which are essentially Hard Rock with an assortment of influences) and Heavy Metal.
