While I agree that Slipknot is metal, it is most certainly not death metal. It does draw inspiration and some slight elements from death metal but it is not a part of that subgenre.infernovolver said:Of course they are metal. They are one of the best death metal bands out there.
Good grief, someone who sees sense.riskroWe said:In general the word 'metal' just refers to dissonant music in a rock'n'roll song structure.
I mean Behemoth and AC/DC are both considered metal, why not Slipknot?
Can you please remove that, it is making me seizeThe-Saboteur said:
This guy nailed it. There really isn't anything else to say, other then i liked slipknot when i was an angsty teenager but when i started expanding my tastes and grew up, realized how shitty they were. For me, it'd be like watching season 1 of heroes then going back to watch seasame street. My tastes are for more complex and gratifying things now, rather then simplistic and unsatisfying things.LoopyDood said:Slipknot is nu metal.
Despite the name, nu metal technically isn't considered a subgenre of metal. Glam rock, once again despite the name, is considered a subgenre of metal.
Sorry folks. The non metal classification came from nu metal's roots. It's a blend of grunge and rap, both of which aren't metal. Grunge is essentially alternate rock with "heavy" downtuned guitars. Nu metal is grunge with rap on top.

Anyway. You're welcome to like what you want.Akai Shizuku said:The first point: Only for a couple songs. Second: Maybe for you, but their songs are stuck in my head all the freaking time. Third: I've listened to a lot of them, and your opinion on the matter is not shared.JC175 said:It follows a generic heavy verse/melodic chorus pattern, has no memorable melody, and its very bland. This video made me feel the same way.
Yes, thank you for that deep and insightful contribution to this thread. You have given me a new outlook on life.dallan262 said:its shit
Eh, I blatantly contradicted myself with that glam rock comment - Check out it's roots. Nobody noticed, so I'll leave it.notsosavagemessiah said:This guy nailed it. The fact that it intrinsically enables people to validate their criticisms of your position does not make it 'crap'. Power Metal is musically distinct from Death Metal. That distinction - along with those between the various other major sound varieties - qualifies metal as having subgenres. Saying "Nu-Metal is not a subgenre of metal" is essentially the same as saying "Nu-Metal is not metal," but it implies additional qualification to the argument because it indicates that the person saying it recognizes the musical differences between these subgenres. The Rockerfly said:Ugh don't get into all that metal sub genre crap
The best thing you can do is ignore the idiots who say "No it's nu-metal", "No, you're gay, it's heavy metal", "Nooo, STFU, it's just metal idiot"
None of these things make the music metal. What they produce is vastly more similar to hard rock and grunge, employing essentially the same patterns of construction and notably lacking those seen in the songs of bands whose music can accurately be classified as Metal. They are metal because they have double bass, de-tuned guitars and too much distortion. They are a good metal band because they have a distinctive sound but the nine members are a bit much
But hey it makes them work s thats fine with me
