Poll: Is there honestly enough of a graphics difference between the 360 and PS3 to make it a selling point

Call me a fanboy or whatever you like but I really perfer the PS3 in nearly every aspect. It just seems far more thought out and less cheap than the 360. Heres how Im comparing each system

Exclusive Games: PS3 easily
Graphics: PS3 slightly (Both running at 1080p.. but very subjective)
DLC: 360 easily
Store: 360 easily
Online: PS3 easily (Australia)
System Quality: PS3 easily
Extras: PS3 easily
Controller: 360 easily
Looks: 360 slightly (I like the green ring)
Dashboard: Even

Both have pros and cons but I think the controller for the 360 is the big winner for most people, its just really ergonomic and nice to hold and the sticks are just the right firmness. But if thats no issue get a PS3 and chuck on yellowdog when your not using it..

The PS3's graphics processor has lower raw fill rate than the 360 so I don't think we're ever going to see something out of the PS3 that really blows the 360 away. It also has fixed vertex/pixel shaders where the 360 has unified shaders which is a benefit in most cases.

Saying that any extra performance that is going to be extracted from the PS3 is going to come from the Cell processor. When we take a look at the Cell vs the Xenon that's in the 360 we notice that they are actually very similar. Basically the Cell used in the PS3 consists of one PPE and 6 usable SPEs while the Xenon is essentially 3 PPEs. Now, numbers wise this doesn't sound too good for the 360 but you need to know that the PPE is the general purpose core and the SPEs are vector units that are unable to directly take input/output and the only communication method they do support is memory sharing with the PPE. While this is great for large number crunching jobs like HPC tasks it's not necessarily great for games.

The Cell, by virtue of it's design is an annoying platform to program for. I say this not because everyone says that but because I actually have experience programming for the Cell processor (Not games, large cluster applications) and writing code to take advantage of the SPEs is both difficult and annoying. If I had a choice I would choose any other platform and that is not what Sony needs to attract developers.

Overall the PS3 and 360 are technically very similar. The GPUs are the same generation with the 360 a bit ahead in performance and features. The processors are based on the same technology with a slightly different approach to what sort of cores they used.

In short, I'm saying that all the previous posts that claim the PS3 will somehow leap ahead of the 360 in graphic power in the future... That's wishful thinking. The truth is that the PS3 costs more because of the Bluray disc drive, the other hardware is really no better than the 360's hardware.

If you're playing on a square screen or anything below 45 inches, you wont even notice. but if you're playing on a very large HDTV it does make a pretty big difference. Still not to the point where I'd say the PS3 is the better purchase, but it would definitely be A selling point

PS3's always seem fuzzy and indistinct when put up side-by-side to the 360's graphics.

Plus, all those dev's pissing and moaning about conversion to that platform can't be for nothing.

Edit:

Though to be fair, I've encountered significantly less of the "texture-popping syndrome" on the PS3 and it invariably runs smoother.

So what's it gonna be?

I contest Store strongly. At the very least they're equal.
Well in my opinion the 360 store is easier to navigate and presented more logically. Although its not really much interest to me it has xbox originals, arcade and I believe you can get netflix in the US on 360. Just seems like a few more options to buy things. If they put some of the classic PS2 games on the PSN store id make them a bit more equal. I do perfer working in real dollars rather than microsofts moon dollars. I do like how you can unoffically connect to each regions store on PSN.

Hmm dont know if I should change my opinion now I think about it. Im trying not to let fanboyism get to my head :p

well, no, it depends on the settings youve set it to and the tv you have, but ultimately no, and based on the decision of which console, depends on how serious you are about the games. n=most of the ps3 games in my opinion are ok with the exculsions of Soul Calibur 4 and the God of War games which were epic (should have been released on the 360) whilst the 360 has more big-name titles. but on the 360, games ratings vary, you have extremely good or extremely bad whilst the ps3 is the all rounder. so whatever your interests are.

I meant virtually...in the gaming experience.
I try to avoid hardware issues :p

Anyways, I think they've pretty much resolved the infamous "Red Ring" by now, and if not, you can ship it to them and expect it back, fixed, at no cost within a few weeks.

By Quality: I mean titles, graphics, online support,...etc.

being a 360 supporter, I would say it's better
but only hard line supporters will say that the graphics are mind-blowingly better on either console. they're not. if you want a difference in graphics, get a wii. it's designed for interaction, not graphics, so it's the only real difference in graphics.

I got mine towards the end of last year and there havent been any hardware updates that im aware of since. I have to install all my games on 360 so the DVD tray doesnt sound like its going to fly to the moon.

No. Psn has the capacity for MAG. Therefore, it has the better service.
The way it'll work for MAG is that Zipper will be providing their own server infrastructure the way Konami did with MGO or like Blizzard provides WoW's servers or like the community provides the vast amount of Counter-Strike servers. PSN's capacity has actually zero to do with this.

If you want massive games on the 360, FFXI and PSU.

They said they did. Big difference.
Ah found it now, all new consoles have a new dvd drive which is quieter.

I think that PS3 first party games (Uncharted, Killzone 2 etc) are more polished and better looking than 360 games but generally there's not a significant difference. Let the games sway your decision :)

Not yet. Bit does it really matter? All that good graphics seem to get used for these days is dirt-simulation.
What about Valkyria Chronicles?
*With a few notable exceptions. They should release that game for the Xbox and PC [if tehy haven't already done so for the latter]. No point in depriving half of the gaming demographic and fuelling the console wars.
So now you're asking that one of the articles of proof that the Ps3 is graphicaly better than the 360 go to the 360? Are you actually following this?
Okay..That probably sounded stupid. And was irrelevant. But I'm sure it could be ported to the delight of many gamers.

The Ps3 is more powerful, I know that.

PS3 is more powerful but unfortunately you wont see it until developers stop twiddling their thumbs and actually create a game using more than half of its potential.
If you ran a graphical benchmark like Vantage [http://www.futuremark.com/benchmarks/] or similar you'd definitely have the PS3 coming out on top.

That being said, I believe it comes down to an individuals preference.
In my opinion I'd probably go for the 360 just because;
- I prefer their controllers
- More of my mates own one and play online
- I prefer their selection of games

But I'm honestly not impressed enough to go out and buy either, I'll stick to my N64 and PC thank you very much :)
