*is still shocked that no one has come in the topic and posted a really obscure game*

Good answers, most of you. Especially, RanD00m and LordCuthberton.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption should be required playing for every sentient being.

Hmm, well I had a 360 before I had a PS3 but I've always been a lover of PS exclusives, so I reeeeally wanted a PS3 before MGS4 came out, and I'm really glad I have one for when GOW3 comes out next year, but there's no NEED to have it. I'd really like a PSP to play KH: Birth By Sleep and Dissidia FF but don't think I ever will, cos it's not a necessity and I'm not big up on portable games (except motherfuckin' Pokemon, of course!)

I think that is your argument there on the second line of this thread. It may not be good and you may not enjoy the game; but just play a demo, watch a mate play it, see someone try it at an expo, whatever. Sometimes you just need to know what the hell everyone else is talking about.

I'm asking if you think there is such a game, and what you believe it to be.

Armored Core. Best combination of mecha and high-speed combat ever.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, Digimon World for the PS1. Even if you're not a fan of Digimon or the PlayStation, that game just had so much content and such an unusual combat system (you just guided your Digimon's AI in battle, rather than give him direct orders a la Pokémon, although if you made him smart enough, you could unlock very specific orders like attacks. Whether he followed your orders was also determined by certain factors).

Yes, even if the game is awful there are some you need to experience just to really know what a bad game is, and some are actually so bad they are fun. Then again some people like bad games.... I have a buddy that likesTwo Worlds.

There probably is, it's usually those innovative or revolutionary games. For example, when GI reviewed the Wii port of Resident Evil 4 their closing line was "If you still haven't played this game, get it now before we revoke your gamer card" which basically meant its a must-play game. And well they were right on the money because it was absolutely fantastic.

Still, its not that easy to play must-play games if it's on a platform you don't have. For example despite so many people highlighting PS2 games I still won't get a PS2 just to play a couple games like Shadow of the Colossus and The Jak and Daxter series.

Then again, now I want a PS2 for other games. Damn you all!

But it's also good to discuss the point being made.

However, I like a direct request so my effort would be Xenon II.

It's the grand-daddy of all shooters and probably started the trend of new games getting big name tracks involved. Yeah it's old school (but then so am I), yeah it wasn't the biggest name band in the day, but then who would lend their nme to a game back in the 80's? Bomb Da Bass went out on a limb with The Bitmap Bros. - who were huge back then - and now to people my age who had an amiga they are a household name.

It was a bloody good game too a still is probably my biggest adrenaline rush of all time as I neared completion without cheats!

No, there are no games that simply MUST be played. And there never will be.

There are plenty of games that I would think you would be a fool to not at least try though.

Shadow of the Colossus.

I think that's as close as you get, really.
I was just thinking, before scrolling down, that everyone makes this sound like a must-play game. I'm still yet to experience it, since I've never owned any Playstation console. Maybe I can bug my friend to buy it and mooch off of his PS3...
You are the exact reason this thread exists. Is there a game so different, that you must go out of your way to play it? Is it a "must play" game worth buying a console/upgrading your PC just to play it?

If you haven't played Bioshock, you haven't lived.

Does that qualify?
Brilliant game, one of the best in terms of immersion into its ideas and can't wait for the next, Original Big Daddy FTW
