Well, there are no games that forgoing the playing of will cause death.

So by your standards, no, I suppose not.

That said, you HAVE to play Mirror's Edge on the PC.
My standards aren't like that, my standards are that the game is so unique, that you must play it to understand it.

That said, why does Mirror's Edge have to be on the PC? Aren't the console versions just as fine?

No. Everyone I've talked to agrees that the controls on console can be very clunky and difficult to work with while running at 30 km/h.

The PC mouse and keyboard work like a dream.
You must have talked to IDIOTS. Worked like a charm for me. Beat it twice, no problem.

Yes and no, there are just some games that must everybody must play in my opinion but you don't NEED to play it , you can live a very happy and successful life if you didn't play that game.

But some games that just blew my mind are: The Secret of Monkey Island:SE, Psychonauts (i just beat it about 5 min. ago as im typing this) ,Halo 3 (to be fair this was my first online experience ever), Braid, Star Wars Battlefront 2.

I would defend those games until the end of time.

Isn't that a good thing?
On a top end system, it is a wonderful little game. On a low end system, it's just annoying as hell.

I forgot for fighting games as well. The Unique Street Fighter 2.

Also, what do you consider a should-play horror and survival-horror?

(I'd pick Fatal Frame 2 and Silent Hill 3, respectively, sorry, SH2 fans)
Should play Horror? I'm tempted by Alien vs Predator (simply because any Alien game is gut-wrenching horror) but...for me it has to be I Have No Mouth But I Must Scream based on the book by Harlan Ellison. Like Psychonauts, as a game it has quite major flaws, but as an experience...second to none.

Equally, with Survival Horror, I'm thinking of X-Com : Terror From The Deep, and The Path., but Dark Corners of the Earth takes it; simply because even knowing the entire story of The Shadow Over Innsmouth doesn't stop you getting terrified by the slightest action; and the chase sequence is astoundingly good.

Like the Meat Circus in Psychonauts, you will try these AGAIN and AGAIN because you desperately want to finish them, despite them being some of the worst, most-forced, god-damn Nintendo hard sequences ever.

Disclaimer: Silent Hill and Resident Evil are very very good, but you're not playing yourself. Condemned scares the living hell out of me, but those two I mentioned scare me and keep me wanting to play.

I guarantee you no matter how much you love a game, there will be some one in this world who hates it.

I loved Final Fantasy 7, and back in the day I told my friends that they had play it. No my friends are all in to racing and fighting games. You know, Anything where they go head to head and make fun of the guy that loses. The concept of a single player game was as alien to them as soap is to a bum. So they didn't even make it through the first disc before I got the phone calls saying "This game is crap. I'm not having fun. Take it home with you the next time you swing by."

The industry is based on people having fun. If you're not having fun, you are pretty much more or less missing the entire fucking point. What it boils down to is the fact that 'Must Play' feels more like a homework assignment than a gaming experience. No one likes homework, and if someone is presented with the option not to do it their inevitable response is going to be "Screw this, lets go play Tekken."

No not really.

I may find something amazing, but someone else may find it bland and boring. That's their opinion.

Sure there are plenty of games I like enough to say, "these are must buys for anyone" but I say that without thinking people have different opinions than my own.

Even if you have to buy a PS3 to feel that experience

Sorry, but... The Path isn't survival horror...

Although I almost agree with you on IHNMAIMS. I was unable to finish the chase sequence in Cthulhu because I got too freaked out.

To me,

A must play game is a game that you could show to a non-gamer and they would happily sit there and not even play it, but watch you play it and would get really immersed into the experience and be really drawn in.

A game that IMHO does this well would be the Half-Life series. 1 and 2 both have a gripping story(okay its not shakespeare, but still pretty cool), the graphics aren't bad(number 1 is very dated and 2 is showing its age, however 2 still looks good, esp to a non-gamer). Theres plenty of action and different set peices

So to me, half-life is a game that is a must play... if you don't like FPS games its one you must play just to experience it

Isn't it? De-emphasized combat, Sprawling locations, Need to just get through the game?

IHNMAIMS doesn't actually
allow you to survive, just who gets to die. Even the true ending leaves 4 characters dead and the other one reduced to an A.I.

And DCotE...dear god, any game that has an unskippable sequence before the start, instakill moments, moments where it takes control, or makes it impossible, and you STILL want to play it? Awesome.

I never said you had to go out and experience it immediatly, just go over a friends house or something.

Uhh... Does Fate/Stay Night count?
I kind of tell everybody I meet that you could just as well be dead if you don't read it...
Too bad most people I meet don't like reading, apparently even less than being dead.

You know, I think I should amend my previous statement.

I think that children, before they are allowed to play anything shiny, new and insipid that the current generation of brightly colored bloom and brownish gray castles that are being offered, should be required by law to play through at least 5 games from the NES and Genesis catalogs, or for that matter any game that was released before the advent of the PS1.

They should get a good grounding in the classics before they are allowed to plunge fourth and get their hands on the newest installment of Halo (Or as I like to call it: FPSes for Dummies). Let them get lost in an 8-Bit Hyrule. Challenge them to complete the Green Hills Zone Act 1 in under 30 seconds. Make them get all the way through the original Doom with no cheat codes. Maybe then they will start demanding more out of a game then 'This is the end of the gun that makes the loud noises and those are squishy targets that will fall over if you spit on them. GO GO GO!'

You must play a mario, zelda, pokemon, or sonic game at least once. It is law.
You do not have to like it, it must simply be in your gaming knowhow.

Because you know ONE DAY, aliens will come down from the sky and demand you know exactly how to clear the last level on Super Mario 3 to save the universe, and then you shall be prepared.

...That being said I believe the 4 above, are some classics you must play at least once

Second. Although I might throw Portal in there, I don't see any reason for someone not to play one of the original Mario games.
Yeah! Portal is something everybody should try.
