Poll: Is there such a thing as a "Must Play" game?

No. Gamers' tastes are far too diverse for there to be a game that everyone loves. And tha'ts a good thing.

For example, many gamers will say Psychonauts is a game everyone should play. Well some of the people who play it might find the gameplay portion of the game, bugs and other problems to be a problem for them to enjoy it.

There are must play games for fans of a certain genre. For example, every FPS fan should play Halo: CE and Call of Duty 4. Every WRPG fan should play Mass Effect. Every fighting game fan should play Marvel vs Capcom 2. I don't feel there are any games that reach across genres. A lot of people say things like Final Fantasy or something like that is a "must play", but I myself don't have any interest whatsoever in JRPGs.

I think there are "Must Play" games in the way that people suggest games that they like to others. I don't think there are any games that set the foundation of all gaming experiences.

Yes, there are the ones that came first, but we're eventually going to reach a point where where crying out, "The original Donkey Kong is the best game of all time!" is going to be grounds for getting sanctioned.

Most certainly. There are many games that everyone considering himself to be a "gamer" should experience. Buying a console for one game or franchise is more subjective, but not unheard of. For me, the series i even got a console for is...

i seriously dont know. I know of people buying a Ps3 purely for the God of War series, and my friend bought a 360 purely for the CoD series, or at least 4 and 6.

There are must plays like Portal, Counter Strike 1.6/Source (at least try, everyone has played it), Felix The Cat(?) and ..i don't know.
It's more like must TRY playing.

There aren't any games you must play, why must you play them? It isn't life and death.

There are games you will be missing out on if you don't play them but it's not like something dramatic is going to happen if you don't.

Like the Meat Circus in Psychonauts, you will try these AGAIN and AGAIN because you desperately want to finish them, despite them being some of the worst, most-forced, god-damn Nintendo hard sequences ever.

That segment made me stop playing the game. Literally, I just gave up. Great game, and that was the last part, and I just couldn't fucking do it.

That's weird. I'm not a very good gamer, but i thought it was very easy. I got trough the stage in minutes and i was disappointed because that stage was too short and the boss was too weak. (just smack him on the head when he stabs hes knife in the ground)
You should (and you will) re-install the game and try again.

Heck, I've been shown some of the "old classic" LucasArts adventure games, and after learning that the solution to the puzzle had no tangible connection with what I was shown, I honestly wonder if the designers just had no firetrucking clue what they were doing or something.

Half-life 2 is a game you need to play.

If you haven't played a Counterstrike before, you really need to experience the basic shooter experience and the amount of server mods that are related to it.

Also just any Half-Life game you need to just play for the grav gun.
And Portal just to see if you like it. And If you do you generally love it.
