I am sketchy about risking being a fag...but keeping your life sounds tempting as well.

This isn't really one of those decisions I'd put down to democracy. Especially internet democracy.

Of course, anyone stupid enough to look to people on the internet when it comes to wearing a helmet probably deserves what they get, and in that case, don't wear a helmet; you'll be doing natural selection a favour. (I'm kidding. I don't want you to get yourself killed. If YOU want you to get yourself killed, then that's your problem.)

No, seriously, wear a helmet. Don't be an idiot. If you don't wanna wear a helmet, drive a fucking car.

EDIT:

You sure about that?

I don't. I have nothing against them and no reason not to, I just don't. I know I should, but I don't.
And, honestly, I'm not about to start. For the past year I've taken by bike everywhere, and haven't fallen once. I understand why it's worth it, and encourage people to wear them, but I find them uncomfortable and don't have to time most mornings to go find one. The worst I have to worry about when biking is being attacked by those geese on Center Street.
I think I'm also being a bit stubborn because I get so pissed with how parents bubble-wrap kids these days to keep them from skinning their knees. And, obviously, trying too hard to prove them wrong, but whatever.

Whine at me all you want about how it's unsafe, or wrong, but I don't care. If I get hurt, it's by problem, not yours.

Not sure if you're referring to motorcycles or not. Anyway a few days back I had a slip and if I hadn't had my helmet on I would have lost a significant amount of face.

When doing some serious mountain biking I wear a helmet, but if I'm just going down town or over to a friends I don't bother. I'm just a bit lazy.

They're too uncomfortable, and considering I'm biking on sidewalks at slow speeds, I don't need to worry too much.

Wearing a helmet does look pretty gay, depends where you are though, mountain biking for instance you would be laughed at for not wearing a helment. Because everyone else knows they wont be seeing your dumb ass at the bottom.

Pffff, only stupid people wear helmets! Clever people wear hairmets!

In any case, I second this post from one of my fellow countrymen:

Decide for yourself. I live in the Netherlands where bike paths are common and cars expect to see cyclists, so I don't need to use a goofy helmet. But if I were in a country hostile to cyclists where bikers need to use the main road, I'd use one for my own safety.
After falling a bazillion times and even getting hit by cars a couple of times, I still have never said to myself "Gee I should start wearing a helmet!"

However, if I'd be a cyclist in New York... Now that's another matter entirely.

Well if he gets injured because he didn't wear a helmet, you have the right to laugh directly in his face at the irony of it.

I haven't worn a bicycle helmet in years. I feel secure in my ability to stay on the bike; and in the case I fall off, my head is unlikely to be a point of impact when I hit the ground. I've fallen off my bike two or three times in the last 4 years, and they were all due to me tying to ride during winter without spikes in my tires. Stupid me. In none of those incidents was there any damage caused to my head.

I realize I should wear a helmet, but I really can't be bothered to. Maybe if I go out on a major trip with my bike I will buy one first.

I remember there was an incident in 8th grade where people were loosening the brake wires on bikes in the schoolyard. It almost caused a pretty bad accident, so someone came by our classroom to ask how many people wore helmets when riding bikes. One person put her hand up.

Edit: Woops. Looked at the question again. Turns out it was whether it is worth wearing a helmet. I guess it is.
But I answered no, because I thought the question was whether I wear one or not.

Your Poll results have been slightly skewed, dear OP.

Yes I wear one but only because I would get fined if I did not.
Personally if given the choice I would not bother. Yes it could save your life if you are hit, but since if you do get hit it is going to be a body shot from a speeding chunk of heavy metal chances are the helmet wont do jack shit. Not to mention that if say you do fall on your head it may save your life but chances are you will just end up snapping your neck instead and thus even if you do survive will be left a cripple.
You'de be surprised, the one and only time I fell while riding my bike, my helmet probably saved my life. I hit my head hard, bounced twice. I probably had a minor cuncussion even with the helmet, and I didn't even get whiplash. Is a helmet going to help if you get hit by a car? No. Will it save you if brake on some sand, or hit a pothole? Probably. On a side note, helmets don't prevent you from breaking your arm.

Nope.
Nobody else around here does either.
Guess we're all gonna die in a horrible and ridiculous biking accident.
What I don't get, is how do people manage to hit their heads? Isn't it some kind of built-in reflex to cover your head as fully and quickly as possible with your arms?

Sure, safety isn't "cool" but being brain damaged or dead isn't a better choice. Although as a kid I never really wore one much, but back then we weren't worried about stuff like that.

Also, are you really worried about what some random stranger thinks about you? If they think you are a "fag" and you are not, then it is you that should laugh at them instead for their ignorance.

I think you should wear a helmet, your brain is fairly important after all.

However, I think that the guy you were talking about doesn't actually need one, nothing of value would be lost if he got hit on the head.

I said no, but not for any stupid reason like "Hohoho I looks stuuupid durf." If I was to ride to work, as like on the street, I would wear a helmet. If I knew I was going on a rough bike trip, rocks and hills, then I would wear one. If I'm just biking casually or through a soft bike path then I just don't bother.

I don't do stunts ether, so it's not often that I get in to Helmet necessary crashes.

Speaking from experience, YES THEY ARE WORTH WEARING!!!!

I've been flipped over the handlebars of my bike at least 3 times, and hit my head in at least 5 other spills. If I hadn't been wearing a helmet, I'd probably not be in the good condition I am today.

Well if he is dumb enough to think like that... then if he ever falls off and hits his head, leaving him dead or horribly brain damaged, it is pretty much natural selection.

Yeh, that sounds extremely cold, but how stupid can you be?

Who cares how protective gear looks, it is there for a reason, and honestly does not look so bad anyway. I know a motorcycle is a bit different, but if I did not wear full protective gear when I went dirt bike riding, I likely wouldn't be here today, and definitely would not have gotten away with scratches and some nasty bruises alone.

A resounding what the fuck went through my head when I read this title. I almost needed a helmet to protect me from the face-palm.
