I don't get it. It seems like everywhere I turn, I see asshats blathering about how weird/crazy/frightening Japanese people are and how much better it is in the west. Hell, half the articles at Cracked are about this very topic, which is why I usually stop reading as soon as the word "Japan" pops up--I've learned from experience that whatever follows is pretty much guaranteed to piss me off. Sorry, but how is this not racist? Why can people not wrap their heads around the idea that it's their culture, they're allowed to be different if that's what they're into, and no one's forcing anyone to pay the Japanese any attention if they don't want to? It's not even like we're talking about human rights violations, like keeping slaves or refusing women the right to vote--last time I checked, hentai doesn't violate anyone's rights anymore than Penthouse does. Arguably less so, in fact, because hentai doesn't involve any actual human beings other than the artists. (Sorry to bring up hentai, but that's usually what people fixate on when they start pointing fingers.) It's simple: If you don't like Japanese culture, fucking ignore it and let me enjoy my manga/anime/Pocky in peace.
