I don't get it. It seems like everywhere I turn, I see asshats blathering about how weird/crazy/frightening Japanese people are and how much better it is in the west. Hell, half the articles at Cracked are about this very topic, which is why I usually stop reading as soon as the word "Japan" pops up--I've learned from experience that whatever follows is pretty much guaranteed to piss me off. Sorry, but how is this not racist? Why can people not wrap their heads around the idea that it's their culture, they're allowed to be different if that's what they're into, and no one's forcing anyone to pay the Japanese any attention if they don't want to? It's not even like we're talking about human rights violations, like keeping slaves or refusing women the right to vote--last time I checked, hentai doesn't violate anyone's rights anymore than Penthouse does. Arguably less so, in fact, because hentai doesn't involve any actual human beings other than the artists. (Sorry to bring up hentai, but that's usually what people fixate on when they start pointing fingers.) It's simple: If you don't like Japanese culture, fucking ignore it and let me enjoy my manga/anime/Pocky in peace.

Thoughts?

Japanese culture is just different, there are different cultures all over the world and its one of my ambitions to live and experience each one, though Japan has to be one proority of mine to visit.

I'd prefer a poll with simpler, more realistic, options:

I like it
I dislike it
I like most of it but not some parts
I like a few parts but not most

etc.

Every culture has its ups and downs. Japan is just radical when it comes to public views from the West, so it gets more attention with questions like this. The mega overly obsessive Japan fans appear like they worship the culture. Then you have things like hentai that give it an overly negative view as an overly sexual nation. The cultural differences are fine and balanced like everywhere else, but the radicalism gives it more attention. Which I guess makes sence because they generally have harder work habits then the West which is compensated by more free flowing and crazy lesiure.

Its definitely something I want to experience. My friend spent a year in Japan right after leaving high school, and would always leave me messages of crazy and funny events that happened to him on a regular basis.

I'd like to go there someday to play their games, and learn their style of filmmaking.

I agree completely. But the problem is, a scary number of people don't see it that way. The hell of it is, if these same people started saying the same stuff about blacks or hispanics, they'd be called racist, and rightly so; but when it comes to the Japanese, suddenly it's okay. Isn't that a double standard?

Sure they're xenophobic dicks, but no one is perfect. I like Japan and all the crazy, whacky, fun stuff that they export via the internet.

Everything I see that is Japanese "culture" annoys me.

Though I'm pretty sure what I see is weeaboo culture and not actual Japanese culture.

Just for you, I added two more options. You're welcome. :D

If I was trolling, I wouldn't have bothered adding a poll. Too much effort for a simple troll.

You must have people smuggling shit into your house or something, because I don't recall forcing you to pay attention to anything you didn't want to.

http://www.japanfortheuninvited.com/articles/train-groping.html
to summise that weblink: # n Japan, more than 4000 men are arrested each year for groping on public transport.
# In 2001, a survey of two private high-schools in Tokyo revealed that more than 70% had been groped on the train.
# A recent survey of Japanese companies suggested that at least 17% of Japanese women have been groped in public.

however, i would still love to go to japan at some point. a minority of people are sick and depraved, but they have such an interesting culture.
