Different aethetic, I appreciate they have cultural 'issues' but not apologising for WW2 is petty and imbecilic and their taboos about clitoris's (is that the plural ? No idea first time Ive ever typed that word pluraly outside of erotica :D )and male urethra's are just scary.

Love the comics, hate the attitudes, porn and the food.
Have I missed something here? 52% of the population have a clitoris and the rest have a urethra running through their penis. You dont see either on mainstream TV in the west so whats the difference?

Like all cultural memes the word "otaku" has been abused, misinterpreted, misunderstood etc.

The word itself has severe negative implications but of course that inevitably creates a counter-culture. The idea of being "proud" to be an otaku is a (mostly) Western bastardization of the term, usually used to show an unnaturally high affection for manga, animé, video games and other Japanese media. So the supposed "otaku" latch onto this identity in an attempt to define themselves as being different from everyone else.

The idea of being an "individual" & being "unique" is something everyone strives for in a capitalistic society, at least to some extent, so a lot of people are willing to associate themselves with something negative in an attempt to emphasise their individuality. So the idea of being an "otaku" in the West is like an extreme manifestation of being "proud to be different". Just liking animé is not enough because so do a lot of other people; you have to be a sociopathic loner who likes animé. Only then can you be an individual and find your own identity.

Of course the irony is that so many people have associated themselves with the word in a positive sense that it's lost all meaning. So if someone refers to himself as an "otaku" in 2009, the only thing you can be sure of is that they're two or three years out of date.
All the kids want to be different, just like all of their friends. Im just waiting until its cool to call yoourself a nonce... That will upset the parents.

Wait, you don't live in Japan?

If you're not Japanese, then why the hell are you defending their culture so much? I hate people who are obsessed with culture that isn't their own.
So I'm not allowed to defend the Japanese culture because I'm not Japanese, but other people are allowed to pass judgement on that same culture even though they aren't Japanese either? I have access to as much information about the culture as anyone else, so my opinion should be as valid as anyone else's.

Besides, I'm proud to be an American, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I also don't think the Japanese are any better or worse than any other culture. I just think they get a bad rep because westerners keep sitting on their high horses and judging them for things that they perceive as "weird." You can't judge another country's culture using your own as a baseline, because who gets to decide which culture is the "correct" one? Okay, the Japanese government is lying about blah de blah de blah fucking blah, but that's not what I was talking about when I started this thread. I was talking about stupid shit like "Their pr0n is t3h gh3y." Who gives a fuck about porn, as long as no one's getting hurt?

Plus, it seems like racism against the Japanese (and Asians in general, frankly) is more accepted than racism against just about anyone else, and I don't get why that is.

Frankly, I won't believe what you say about the Japanese. You don't have a complete understanding of their culture, so you can't tell me what to think about it.

There have been some Japanese (or at least one to my memory) people (or people who lived in Japan for a lengthy period of time, can't remember which) and I will actually trust their opinion on Japanese culture.

Also you argument is weak. Porn may not hurt anybody (which is debatable) but it is laying the foundation for decadent society.

I can't stand those people who want nothing else in their life then being a Japanese watching anime all day, to whom going to Japan is the ultimate goal in life, those people. I call 'em sad.
And no, I really don't like anime.
I love Japanese History too!

What is even better is this stuff is removed from Japanese History Books and they sacked a teacher who had her class write an apology to Korea! Wonderful nation really. I wonder how many people would love a Germany that denied the Holocaust? Probably no one but its ok Japan just killed a bunch of Asians no big deal am I right?

You're calling the Japanese, the people who invented the capsule hotel and who mostly sleep on the floor, decadent? Sorry, but are we still talking about the same Japanese?? About the most decadent thing they do is take long baths. The Japanese may be many things, but "decadent" is hardly one of them.

Plus, forgive my skepticism, but you're trusting the opinion of maybe one person who may or may not even be Japanese, and yet you claim to have a more complete picture of the culture than I do. You're gonna have to do better than that. Have you ever bothered to study the culture for yourself, or are you simply basing everything you "know" about it on hearsay? I have studied the culture (not just through manga/anime, but through learning the language, for instance), and I'm no expert, but I'd wager that I still know a hell of a lot more than you do.

Not that I stand a chance in hell of convincing you, but since you brought it up...

1. A teacher was sacked for making her students write apologies to the Koreans. First, [citation needed]. Second, even if it's true, that alone should tell you that not all Japanese people are willing to overlook the crimes of their government's past. Plus, how do you know that was the only reason she was fired? If she assigned this while she was supposed to be teaching geometry, or if she was caught stealing pencils or something, I'd say her boss is justified in firing her. Provide details.

2. In the very article that you cite (good job on trusting Wikipedia, incidentally--all those [citation needed] tags do wonders for its credibility, and it speaks to the grueling twelve seconds of research you undoubtedly put into framing your argument, but I digress), it says, and I quote: "When [Yoshiaki] Yoshimi's findings were published in the Japanese news media on January 12, 1993, they caused a sensation and forced the government, represented by Chief Cabinet Secretary Kato Koichi, to acknowledge some of the facts that same day. On January 17, Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa presented formal apologies for the suffering of the victims, during a trip in South Korea. On July 6 and August 4, the Japanese government issued two statements by which it recognized that "Comfort stations were operated in response to the request of the military of the day", "The Japanese military was, directly or indirectly, involved in the establishment and management of the comfort stations and the transfer of comfort women" and that the women were "recruited in many cases against their own will through coaxing and coercion".[49]" That doesn't sound like rewriting history to me. Yes, it does say "some," not "all"; but if anyone can show me any government in the world whose every action is an open book, I will stick my junk in a tree shredder. And yeah, Shinzo Abe basically took it all back in 2007, but gues what: SOME POLITICIANS ARE ASSHOLES. That's anywhere, not just Japan; hell, my country elected the king of the assholes. Twice, in fact. (Protip: Try reading the damn article to make sure it actually agrees with you before using it to defend your position.)

I did read the article but you obviously didn't since it said that the atrocities can't be fully counted since Japan to this day refuses to release its files on it. Japan has constantly blocked Allied Access to its files and continues to refuse to turn over war criminals.

And here is the article about the teacher.

To be honest arguing with a disgusting weeboo like yourself is a waste of time if Japan raped babies for a living you would love the shit out of it. Care about your own culture and stop acting so pathetic. Japan doesn't care or even bother to aknowledge it invaded Korea so why defend it? Would you defend Germany if they told the Jews to go fuck themselves and that there was no Holocaust? I doubt it.

Goodie, insults.

I stand corrected as far as the teacher getting in trouble (she wasn't fired, though, just suspended). But I'll say again that that just proves that there are Japanese people who are as disgusted by their government's white-washing of history as everyone else. So claiming that "Japan doesn't care" is ridiculous because obviously some part of Japan does care. (Also, the article you provide is several years out of date; Shinzo Abe's term as Prime Minister has come and gone.)

It still seems to me that the politicians in Japan who want to rewrite the past are in the minority. Everything I've read says that, officially, the Japanese government admits culpability in WWII and has tried repeatedly to make up for it, by giving money to the countries it's wronged for instance. It's not Japan's fault that South Korea decided to use that money for other things rather than giving it to the families of the victims like it was supposed to.
