I never hear anything good about it. So how am I supposed to have an opinion of it that isn't negative?
If I were a lesser man, I'd point out that most of the world says exactly the same bloody thing about the United States. (If you're not American, of course, you probably agree with me.) But I'm above that sort of chicanery, so I won't say it. :D

(Before anyone calls me out on it: Yes, I'm well aware that this entire post is ironic. This is what we grownups call "humor.")

I don't really care for Japan. Doesn't mean I have anything against the Japanese, I just have a more vested interest in countries like Finland, Sweden, Germany, Norway, etc etc. Though I will admit sushi is easily my favorite food out there.

Dude, it's 2009, all the stories have been thought up already. If you can show me one completely original story anywhere, Japan or otherwise, I'll eat my hat.

You must have people smuggling shit into your house or something, because I don't recall forcing you to pay attention to anything you didn't want to.
You're trying to force people to pay attention by whining on the internet about how people are stopping you enjoying your manga/anime/Pocky. We'd have no negative ideas about Japanese culture if it wasn't for spergin' idiots like you vehemently defending it from nothing and nobody.
...since when does making a forum poll constitute as forcing it down your throat, if you dislike japanese culture than why the hell did you enter a thread ABOUT japanese culture??
Please don't feed the trolls. Just report and move on.

This is the internet. The only things one hears about Japan are the aspects where they differ from one's parent culture.

I could mention, for example, the fact that salespeople are, pretty much as a rule, polite. Japanese taxi drivers (at least the ten or so I've met) are among the nicest and most helpful people you could ever meet. They have an arcade culture that is still going strong, with more varieties of games, and UFO Catchers that hold things besides stuffed animals. Having at least one drink vending machine every half-mile or so within city limits is extremely convenient. Their public transportation is to die for, especially if you come from the U.S. Most people you could meet will be, at minimum, polite to you. The countryside is absolutely beautiful, especially in spring and early summer, and a few weeks every year, the entire country is covered with cherry blossoms.

I could go on, but I'm starting to sound like a tourist brochure.

to summise that weblink: # n Japan, more than 4000 men are arrested each year for groping on public transport.
# In 2001, a survey of two private high-schools in Tokyo revealed that more than 70% had been groped on the train.
# A recent survey of Japanese companies suggested that at least 17% of Japanese women have been groped in public.

however, i would still love to go to japan at some point. a minority of people are sick and depraved, but they have such an interesting culture.
I'd imagine that, Japanese trains being as crowded as they are, it's easy to misinterpret an accidental bump or something as a grope. Just playing devil's advocate.
if that were the case where are the women being arrested, because everyone is prone to accidents. and pubs and clubs are all overcrowded, but how many people are arrested for groping in there, accidental or not.
but still, further on in the article it does mention women abusing it by saying they will fake a claim of groping to get cahs from a victim, so it's not impossible that some of those 4000 didn't do anything except annoy a vindictive woman.
Generally speaking, women are viewed as being above that sort of behavior, whether it's true or not. And that's true in almost all cultures, not just Japanese; you almost never find women being picked up for sexual assault in the US, for instance, even though I'm sure it must happen somewhere.

Plus, pubs and bars may be crowded, but it's rarely the kind of literal shoulder-to-shoulder crowding you see on Japanese subways. I'm talking packed to the point where "sardine-like" ceases to be a metaphor and becomes literal truth.

But I must thank you for reasoning with me like an adult. Much appreciated. :D

Don't forget that the animation style of one of the first animes was based on the old Mickey Mouse cartoons. :p

I don't get all the Japan hate... Sure everyone hates Weeaboos and the idiotic type of Otaku (I find it highly offensive when someone labels all Otakus stupid and whiny) but I hate it when someone hates on the culture just because it's not "normal" and "safe".

Japan haters suck...

(Yes I identify as an Otaku, it's not a bad thing)

Oh right, the poll. I would vote for 'Wacky fun' and the 'I can't wait to go there' thing. But I can't do that so I just voted for 'wacky fun'.

The one thing that gets me going is people hating anime. Usually they've watched a quick 2 or 3 minutes of Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, or Bleach and feel that they've watched a representative sample of the 10s of thousands of hours of anime out there.

Don't get me wrong, there's bad anime out there. A *lot* of bad anime out there. But on the same side of the coin there's a lot of say, bad movies or books out there. I'm not going to reject every book or movie because of a few bad eggs. If some people were willing to keep their prejudice in check, there's probably something for them out there.

And speaking of that, not every protagonist is some androgynous man-woman out there. Although the strange fascination that every hero has to be some rugged brown hair muscled cube is rather strange if you think about it, too.

[CITATION NEEDED]

Besides, we can spend all day dredging up historical wrongdoings; that doesn't prove anything about the culture today. Slavery was once legal in the US, but does that mean we still think slavery is right? Of course not. (Or at least most of us don't. There's always a few assholes though.) Also, as for displacing indigenous peoples and pillaging their land: *koff koff indians koff*

If they dont want to know about a culture that I personally find so very fascinating then fine. Ofcourse ignorant hate is always a bad thing. But thats one thing japanese does better as they are rather more open minded than us.
