In videogames though, I prefer the Battletech-style Western mechs. Eastern-style mechs often feel... lacking. It's just 'normal' action scaled up a bunch. The bulky, clunky, somewhat unwieldy feel of Western mechs really enhances the idea that you're strapped to a 90-ton engine of mass destruction. The fact that they usually come equipped with stuff that's on the right side of the suspension-of-disbelief barrier helps, too.
I can see what you're getting at there.

Personally, I prefer the clunky insaneness of the 40K style mech. I've never seen an animae mech that I've thought "this is what a mech should be", and tend not to like the style of mech-heavy animae shows. This does NOT mean that I'm slagging off all animae mechs or animae in general, it just means I haven't seen any I like YET (and the pool of what I have seen is rather small, so I'm not even dissing that many shows).

You say that like it isn't totally true. Warhammer 40K is pure concentrated awesome.

You are!

Plus they have this:

Yes, the Imperator titan is so large that it actually has a bloody castle on its back, complete with its own array of cannons and a landing pad for fighter craft.

And because everything thing he draws is awesome, here are pictures of a Thousand Sons marine and dreadnought by Clint Langley.

Deny the awesome at your own peril!

i kinda surprised no one has put up these links up.

i am big Mechwarrior fan. 25-100 ton implacable armoured plated killing machine with a fusion reactor lodged in its chest cavity (which goes up into a very nice expolsion when it cracks, i might add =D). if humans ever do make a feasiable battle mech its going to look like battletech.

everyone likes the madcat (timberwolf) but i much prefer the inner sphere design (its the whole "underdog" thing).

For me, some anime almost makes the mark: Code Gease almost got it right - in fact, it's first third or so was awesome. 'Knightmare Frames' were a decent embodiment of mass-produced walking tanks and the 'hero mech' Gurren made sense. The use of what amounted to rollerskates for extra manoeuvrability *almost* made sense, but they went seriously over the top with the insane speeds and turns they could pull off.

Then they went down the whole 'children proving themselves with mech piloting ability' route ALL anime likes to go with, then the magic mechs turned up - you know, the ones with handguns that could blow away the moon and that could fly with a small backpack. Yeah, the end got shitty to the point that I was wondering why on earth either army even used Nightmares anymore, seeing as how many super-special-awesome hero mechs there were :/

Full Metal Panic also had some nice, chunky almost Western designs, but when you see a MECH peeking around a corner, clutching an assault rifle, before dashing out and gunning down a guy - sorry, mech - down the far end of a corridor you realise that the mechs are entirely secondary to the action here, as opposed to being the focus of it. That's the wrong damn was around :/

Armoured Core is pure win to play, but the problem is that you could replace the mech with a dude in a suit or just an anime dude and you could get away with exactly the same gameplay - there's practically nothing there that makes it about giant robots other than the art.

Mech Warrior gets it beautifully - titanic death machines that move at conceivable speeds equipped with weapons that feel as powerful as they are, with the traits of each mech visible from its appearance (as in, that rifle isn't going to turn out to be some super-mega-deathray cannon, it's just a huge fucking cannon). Have a look at the opening and tell me you can't see the epic that these mechs bring.

OK, because I have to repeat it, let me say this: I don't hate Warhammer40k. The reason I bought it up so much in my defensive freakout is because, from experience, people tend to use it to get bashy. It's the fanbase, really.

It looks like the gleam of hope for this thread might have been crushed during my absence.

Why talk about fictional mecha when we could be discussing actual mecha? Fictional mecha are cool, but real mecha can kill you.

From Japan, a real-life Power Loader (link [http://pinktentacle.com/2009/09/power-loader-exoskeleton-suit/]):

From America, the Raytheon Sarcos exoskeleton (link [http://www.gizmag.com/raytheons-robotic-exoskeleton-delivers-super-human-qualities/9282/picture/44214/]):

The mighty rescue robot T-52 Enryu (link [http://www.gizmowatch.com/entry/gigantic-tmsuk-t-52-enryu-is-a-savior-in-emergency/]):

The creator of Project Grizzly [http://www.engadget.com/2004/05/11/grizzly-bear-fighting-suits-for-sale-on-ebay/] brings us the Trojan (link [http://www.geekologie.com/2007/01/inventor_of_bear_suit_makes_re.php]):

There are numerous other examples, of course. In the end, I go with Japan. When conception meets construction, they outperform America in the creation of functional mecha [http://www.videosift.com/video/Real-Japanese-Mech-Warrior].

western versions tend to be more practical and semi-realistic or at the least plausible

Tho i do love the way Japanese ones look. particularly the Koenig Monster from the Macross/Robotech Series

I'm presuming you actually watch that link, right? The only way something like that could kill anyone would be when it fell over. As mechs go it has none of the bonuses and all of the weaknesses; no all-terrain - it can't even lift its feet, it slides them (presumably on wheels, lol), no speed, slow turn, fixed weapon mounts, unsteady, tall, easy-to-target profile, and it looks fragile as. Perhaps as a fun project into something that resembles a bi-pedal walker (which it's not as the lack of vertical leg motion demonstrates), but calling it a mecha is going too far.

As far as 'out-performing America in the creation of functional mecha' goes, I think it's still in the air, though I do like their experiments in reading electrical impulses in nerves rather than the US' pressure-sensing tech.

It's interesting to see how the giant robot concept has run from the west, the the east and then back again and to see the influences they've had on each other. But I prefer the generally more mechanical nature of western designs. Japan's mecha have gotten to into the realms of silly physics defying balet dancers.
Early Robotech was great, but Fasa studio ran with it better (Battletech) than Studio Nue (Macross), even if battletech 'isn't' Robotech there's a fair few ideas quietly borrowed and some not so quietly, just fitted into a more westernised design philosophy. Which I like.

Aesthetics wise Japanese mech's are the way to go.

But when you want to to just destroy s### who cares what you look like?

I chose Western designs for the same reason I like the A 10 thunderbolt.
They are both practical (as practical as a mech can be) and very killy

Oh & no it hasn't got the giant robot in it just the candygram sketch!!!
He is the Big Guy from Big Guy & Rusty. He refers to the giant bombs as "Candygrams". He is the best e-quipped robot ever.

I prefer western, purely because they always seem to have a little bit of a steam-punk vibe. More practical than stylish.
