Why would someone fake ADD?
So they can act as evil as they want without repercussions. "Oh, excuse little Timmy's setting fire to your tie, he has ADD"; "Oh, excuse my son kicking you in the shins, he's got ADD"
Personally, I think it's to get attention from peers or to foster some sort of reputation.
Probably that too. Or a mixture of both. Basically, its to be a disruptive arsehole; if the internet has taught us one thing, its that alot of people are, deep down, out and out self-arseholes. ADHD faking is simply one method to try and get the excuse to be that way outside of the internet, as well as for the arsehole 'click's and school gangs to have a 'status symbol' of sorts.

Its sad for real ADHDers, cus they get lumped in with these fakers. I think Leonardo Da Vinci has some form of ADD, as he seemed to have trouble seeing projects through to their completion (In fact, he considered the Monica Lisa an incomplete work). And I know of at least one real case of ADHD, so I'm sure its a real condition.

I was diagnosed in freshman year of high school, and began to take medication for it. At first it worked, but we kept on having to up the dosage, since my brain was like "NO! I DO NOT ACCEPT THIS!" Eventually I stopped taking the medicine and took it like man.

So, the best advice for anyone with ADD: nut up and shut up.

I have it, small end of the spectrum.

I really don't know why somebody would pretend to have ADD or something along those lines, I know people who have it and they don't wish it to be known that they do.

Seems foolish to me, yeah you'd be known for something but being known for lying isn't all that good a thing.

Most of the cases of "ADD" i have seen are just kids who are bored and don't have self control and their parents want an excuse so they don't have to accept their bad parenting.

I think for the most part ADD is the result of our education system's unwillingness to catch up to what modern technology is doing to the way people learn. The medication that supposedly "treats" it has been proven to stunt creativity and imagination. I wonder how many great artists and idea-people we've lost to Ritalin because we want them to be able to sit still for hours at a time. When did that become the goal of our education system? To keep kids belted to their desks? It's just sad, really.

I've heard of it; a friend on mine thinks he has it, but I'm not really sure what it is.

yeah seems to happen a lot. Reason most people didn't know about ADD is because it just seems like the kid is bored, not paying attention and therefore it's their own fault. That was the thinking of the time. There was one kid my parents looked after who had ADHD the H being (Hyperactive) and in my opinion, that just sounds like bullshit. He was able to stay watching TV, stay on the PC, play video games and so he was able to keep his attention and only acted out when drinking coke or getting hyped on sugar, despite what his doctor said and refused to take his medicine too.

This current kid has something called "Asperges" but he doesn't appear to act like he has it. His problem is from his mother. As a young child his mum kept telling him he had it and yet he had never seen a Psychologist. She just said this because she wanted to make up the excuse for not looking after her own kid. He's only in care because he's been kicked out of school like 3 years ago and still hadn't found him a place and his mum "Can't deal with him" so he got put into care and she get's paid if he's diagnosed with a psychological illness.

So I believe there are many people who fake it and some who fake it because they get told by their parents they have it. I'm not saying everyone is a faker, there are people who have it just like Tourets. I think it's disgusting to get away with things by claiming you have a serious mental condition.

I hate kids who say they have ADD as an excuse for being to lazy to pay attention in class.

My close friend has turrets, As funny as some people might think it is, it get's pretty sad when my friend's covering his mouth in a public area and people are staring at him.

ADD.... one of the biggest cons out there.

American kids take so much medication now a days that good parenting could easily resolve.
Umm. sorry to burst your bubble, but I have ADHD and it is not a con. MY parents are really great and have helped me develope as a person without sheltering or coddling me. I do rely on medicaton. I also have straight A's. I graduated high school with a 3.8 gpa (I went to an academically challenging private school, where A's actually take work to get). I now have a full-tuition academic scholarship at IIT in Chicago. SO take your ignorance elsewhere, pal.

I think it's extremely overdiagnosed to the point where I wonder if it really exists.

ADD is ridiculously over-diagnosed. Just because parents can't discipline their children they get a doctor to drug them up and make them zombies. Sure some people legitimately have it, but the majority is just another pharmaceutical cash in.

I was diagnosed with ADD, but I never sought the treatment nor the diagnosis. And even then, my school offered to make special accommodations for me, I declined.

I just shut up and took the pills. Of course, they really didn't do much except give me an unfathomable boost in confidence, and my schoolwork consisted of one failing grade after another, so yeah.

ADD simply means that they can't focus on things for very long, they simply have a short attention span. The people who have it don't suffer at all, they just get failing grades on tests and in school. In a way there happier then everyone else because if they don;t like something, they have a medical reason to stop listening and focus on something else. ADD basically a medical way of saying stupid.
Please stop talking out of your ass. I LEGITIMATELY have ADHD and I make straight A's and have an IQ of 120. That is a far cry from stupid. And yes we suffer. Because we don't pay close attention to detail our ability to socialize properly is stunted during childhood. I had no friends from 2nd til 6th grade. Four years of social isolation... tell me again that we don't suffer. Oh, and I still have some residual social anxiety because of that.
Peace,
Adrienne

Not true, I read an autobiography of a guy who has Asperger's. If you have the chance, read Look Me in the Eye by John Elder Robison. He's the brother of the guy who wrote the book Running with Scissors which was made into a movie. Didn't see it, but still. Also, don't forget that it's the punchline of many a Yahtzee joke.

OT: I don't see much if that at my school. People are pretty mature here. I guess that's one of the advantages of doing to a private school.

I'm supposedly diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), actually my Brother and Sister are meant to have it as well--yet I'm actually quite a quiet guy that pays attention to things pretty well.

I think Fluffybacon said it well in that it just requires a different way of learning something than the normal. I switched to another College this fall that teaches everything online--so everything is mostly taught through visual techniques (pre-written lectures, videos, etc.) and I find it really easy to catch up with what is going on in the class. In my High School and previous college I would have a hard time to comprehend any lecture that is spoken to the class--my hands would get cramped from writing so much and I always fear that I didn't get good notes over that lecture.

I was a pretty "hyper" kid when I was...5? And I still did silly stuff even in High School...but I do pretty well now and I have never taken any kind of drug to tend to my ADD condition. Personally I think of it as a scam-diagnosis as a means to pump kids up with drugs so they would act "normal"--though this discussion made me think of a Cousin which has a very hard time sitting still and is really rebellious, and he is in his early twenties now. So I'm kind of on the fence of whether ADD is real or not.

Apparently, I have ADD. My brother has ADHD. Without my meds, I can never focus. But I dont use that as an excuse, I actually have a problem with asking for extensions and such. With my brother, age 15, he needs his meds, if he doesnt take it, he's WAAAAAAAYYYY to hyper.
