Look, we're barely able to survive as an industry with the violence we have now. If we could murder children in games, then christ! California and FOX News would destroy us all. I think that children-ocide is wrong, if only because it would damage video games as a whole.

Well think about it. Name one movie were a kid dies graphically. Can't name one? It is like an unspoken rule among media sources. Nothing is allowed to kill kids in anything. Heck the Predator isn't allowed to kill kids in his movies. I only know two movies were a kid dies horribly. From Dusk till dawn and the Blob remake.

These are nothing more than non-sapient computer programs. So no, it's not wrong to kill them. It's even necessary for true immersion as an evil character. Developers prevent you from doing it just to avoid controversy and lawsuits.

If we have kids be killable in video games, we move to the train of thought that video games aren't real, we aren't killing anyone, it's all data, and there's something wrong if you think killing is fine as long as you slap an age limit to it(as some videogames where children are invincible have you killing innocent adults aswell). In that case I'm for killing kids in videogames, because it aint real...

It's all down to discretion. I really don't think killing children is something that should be promoted or encouraged in any way, and therefore the depiction of such a thing is usually negative. I do acknowledge thought that there are probably some situations in which this fits context, not that it is right

No, it's perfectly fine in games. If this game gives me free reign on my character's actions I am going to send a damn railway spike through a small child's skull if I feel like it, even if I have to download a mod to do so! Besides, the best way to cure annoying child syndrome is shotgun shells or 5mm rounds!

Not to mention the whole idea of "THEY ARE NOT REAL" and the fact that video games have...little...correlation with increased aggression and violence in the players.

You can kill kids in Fallout, it's Fallout 3 you can't.

It annoys me when people are plot indestructible, it really annoys me when they're indestructible because it might be damaging for me to see them die.

Which is why I mod them to be killable and do it anyway.
You're playing too much Oblivion, try Morrowind instead.

Also, I'm a bit paranoid about playing Borderlands because if either of my parents walk in on me shotgunning a Mutant Midget Psycho in the face, they'll think it's a kid and get all... I dunno. My parents are acting really weird today.

I don't know if this was explained, but this seems like the right place to ask it, where did all the kids in little lamplight come from?

As a parent I would like to see more ability to kill children. Anything to help alleviate the desire to hug them ever so tightly around the neck with your hands.

In all seriousness, is anyone really surprised there is little or no examples of killing children in games? Its not really accepted or tolerated in any sort of media outside of literature, and even then.

As I recall there was a little hullabaloo over Star wars episode 3 with Anakin killing off "Younglings"

Is there really a compelling argument for killing children in games? I know based on game mechanics they can be just as lethal as adults but really is there any sort of way you could portray a motivation to do so? I mean typically they are little more than a nuisance, and impossibly far from anything conceivable as a threat. Sure they can be obnoxious but meh, why would you want to kill em? If anything give the ability to corrupt them and turn them into a mini horde of minions and unleash 3 foot tall fury on anything in proximity, that would be genuinely more entertaining IMHO

I think you should be able to kill them. They're just a bunch of pixels.
Since it's my decision to kill them (or not, that is), I'd find it nice if games left it to me whether I consider myself stable enough to see a virtual child die or not.

I like the idea of a game making you question your actions as to what it is your killing. We're taught to feel victory often upon murdering in games, but to be taught uncertainty and guilt? Reminds me of Shadow of Colossus and how games condition us into committing acts of violence to win the game, but if you a drawn in the actions hold greater resonance.

Also think of the media shitstorm that would happen if a game where you could kill children came out
because there has never been a game where you could kill kids... ever..

While the thought of killing virtual children bugs me, you have to admit that some games let you do far worse things. Since it's virtual, I don't see anything immediately wrong with it outside of the negative media attention.

I don't think it's wrong, but ever since I heard this rumour that FPS games make ordinary people more likely to pull the trigger, all these stupid people have gone "Oh Shit!" and taken action.

A lot of tests have been supported to see if it actually does (has been proven that it doesn't on many many occasions) and yet all these ignorant parents still go on about how it does with absolutely no proof what so ever.

Also, who here hasn't seen any violent movies where shit loads of people die including children? It's not like it's new, games are more of an experience but not so much it will torment anyone.

For those who have been wanting to kill children in fallout 3

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=376

Also lets you play as one...it's becoming a popular trend in the fallout 3 modding scene.

Going to Little Lamplight with a Fatman, a Gatling Laser and a Minigun. It feels like Christmas.

OT: I don't think it's wrong wether you can kill children in games or not. They don't exist, and I play games so that I can ignore reality.
Things like that are reasons why I wish I got fallout 3 for pc.

Once Again: Simply writing "Poll" In the thread's title does not make the thread into a pole.

OT: I can kind of see why it generates controversy, But it also seems a little stupid. I mean, They're not REAL kids. They're just bits of data and pixels made to look like children. So, why be bugged by it? Besides, in some games, like Fallout 3, where the kids have giblet models under their skin(See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHYqwiPw3Ok ), it seems like the game kind of WANTS you to kill them.
