Do you mean Kukri by any chance? :p
Its a machete to me pal.
I don't even know how to pronounce that so I just call it a Machete.

Haha... I used to call it a machete too until I read the item name.

Yeah, sorry. Knife etiquette? No, can't say I care for it. I see the entertainment, but it's just not my cup of tea. Oh, sure; if the whole server is going all-melee for a few rounds, I won't be the shithead to ruin it, but if you run at me with knife a-twirling, don't expect any courtesy from me.

Unless you're a Heavy using the KGB. Then it's just a grand Russian romp.

I agree on some acount, if I see somone coming at me with a knife on Battlefield I will accept and pull out my knife. However on Call of Duty knife fights look retarded therefore I shoot first knife later.

Melee in FPS games just flat out sucks, with rare exceptions where actual thought was expended on it. If there are more than 1-2 admin enforced knife rounds, I relocate to a non-retarded server. It goes without saying I'll shoot any "duelist" I find.

Knifes, no. There have been a few rare occurences where people have accepted my melee challenge.

What when was there knife etiquette in FPSs? Im a veteran of the early CS days and i never saw this. Only thing i can remember that comes close is the 2 person knife charge on the other team, which was suicide but very fun. So no, i have no idea what the hell you are talking about.

EDIT: Also what did you expect when you charge a man holding a gun? Shouldnt you have messaged them first with your intentions?
How did you never hear this in CS, back in the day I remember everyone knowing that if you heard that amazingly ridiculous knife sound that the one in CS made, especially if you did it by a wall, some one wanted a knife fight.
Shink Shink Shink Shink...Knife time!

While I have had people run towards me with their knife out rather than a gun, I have never pulled out my knife and run towards them too. The way I've always seen it is if they do this and they're too far away (2 seconds is close enough), they deserve to be shot.

A problem has arisen in my most beloved FPS games. The Knife Etiquette is lost (kind of). The Knife Etiquette, as I like to call it, is the non-verbal challenge to a knife fight. It was once common in most PC FPS games, but recently it has vanished.

I find my self walking towards someone, swinging my knife, only to be shot in the face and then teabagged accordingly. Rarely there are people who see me knifing and pull out there knife and accept the challenge (thus proving I'm not completely insane).

Now, I'm sure I'm going to get flamed greatly (I partially believe I should be for believing in unwritten rules), but I hope that at least someone out there sees my point in this.
I'm thrilled to see that there are other people that know this situation. I think it really depends on what game you're playing and what the target audience of that game is. Quake tends to have a more mature audience and I've had many gauntlet fights in Quake Live, in all kinds of situations. After circling an opponent of equal skill, both firing and dodging well-placed shots, one of you pulls out his gauntlet and without any other form of communication, the gauntlet fight begins. It's like an unspoken code of honor.

After reading through everyones posts, I've come to the same conclusion. It all boils down to what games you're playing, and the people you're playing with.

Most people fail to have this ettiquette but i make a point of doing my best to uphold this most sacred (besides spawn killing) of unwritten FPS rules.

For any CS: Source fans out there who have played any zombie infection mod --> don't forget to have knife etiquette, those zombies are nice enough to be too stupid to wield guns, the least we can do is reciprocate

The only time I see knife knife honor is when there is a agreement. As in a CS match where there a 2 left and a chat pops up saying "Knives?". Because I don't feel like reading every post to check if its been quoted... "Who brings a knife to a gunfight?"

I got a question about this "etiquette" you speak of.

If you challenge me to a knife fight and I refuse because I play shooting games to shot things, what do I do just let you walk away???

If your on the other team I kill you, end of story. Right?

i know what you mean, you can never have a good old fashioned knife fight these days. personally; i think guns in games are over rated. there's little more satisfying than slicing up your enemies' body after stabbing them repeatedly =)

Oh don't get me wrong, I play COD4 like a ninja. I run around knifing everyone in the back, from the shadows.

But I don't charge strait at them expecting them to pull out their knife just because I play that way. People like their guns in shooting games so I find creative/sneaky ways to get in close.

If you killed me I wouldn't mind (maybe). This whole thread was just to see if this unofficial rule still existed in some form, and it does apparently.

Seems like you missed out on the era of honorable gaming. (Not intended to be a negative comment)

No offence taken.

Yhea I haven't been gaming long enough to know what knife etiquette is.

I'm used to expecting a barrage of bullets if I can't close distance using cover or sneak effectively.

I understand what you're saying, but in a fast, competitive, hectic battle I'm still going to shoot you in the face.

Gaming just isn't as personal or pride based any more. People play buy the rules of what ever game they are playing.

I kinda like the idea of a bunch of fellow knife ninjas running around the map shanking eachother all match.

But only if we all agree to it first, most people I think are justified in gunning you down if you challenge them and they don't play that way.
