Poll: Knife Etiquette: Where has it gone?

A problem has arisen in my most beloved FPS games. The Knife Etiquette is lost (kind of). The Knife Etiquette, as I like to call it, is the non-verbal challenge to a knife fight. It was once common in most PC FPS games, but recently it has vanished.

I find my self walking towards someone, swinging my knife, only to be shot in the face and then teabagged accordingly. Rarely there are people who see me knifing and pull out there knife and accept the challenge (thus proving I'm not completely insane).

Now, I'm sure I'm going to get flamed greatly (I partially believe I should be for believing in unwritten rules), but I hope that at least someone out there sees my point in this.

To clarify what I am talking about:

For those who haven't seen this; the knifer doesn't charge at his opponent in attempt to kill, but swings their knife while out of melee range until their opponent switches to the knife too.

Usually, I'm too busy freaking out and "OMG THEY'RE GOING TO KILL ME!!!" to worry about what particular weapon they're holding.

But it sounds magical to be able to do mêlée in a shooter. <3

Well I can see the point and it makes sense...there is a rather glaring flaw...you are relying on human intelligence and morality to be able to do this.

Only game I've played where that happened was bf1942.
And even then I'd have to bloody dance around for a bit before they got the hint.

It all depends on the server, I suppose. If you're playing with a bunch of twitch-firing instant-gratification XBL stereotypes, it's not surprising that you'll just get shot. You have to find people who a) can appreciate subtlety, so that they understand what you're doing, and b)are willing to do things technically outside the normal expectations.

These are usually the most fun to play with. I can recall a time in Halo CE when both I and an enemy had each others' flags, and we called a truce and had a dance-off. The winner got to beat the loser to death with their flag and return his team's flag. (I lost.) This isn't the sort of thing you could do with just any group of players, and the same holds true for a knife duel.

Frankly, it doesn't hurt to tell them your intentions too. If you want to duel, tell them so and they might accept, even if they would rather shoot you in the face with a shotgun and be done with it. Rarely in any game will you find such "honorable" players that are willing to engage in a duel with an unspoken invitation.

EDIT: Also what did you expect when you charge a man holding a gun? Shouldnt you have messaged them first with your intentions?
The whole walking at them while swinging your knife in the air thing was once understood as a signal of your intentions.

I played BF1942 when people were doing this on mass, turned into a big knife fight. I just found a nice place up high with a sniper rifle and began picking off the dancers one by one. It was a good game.

Only slightly related but a while back there existed a team on Halo 3 with all their logos set as hearts, urging everyone to "Share the love" and join their spinning/jumping/dance group, meaning around 10-15 mins (I don't recall how long the games are) of everyone spinning around together and a tie with zero kills each per team.

I used to honor this, but people started to be dicks about it and I stopped. I know shoot anything enemy like no matter their intentions.

If you play a shooting game, most people wanna shoot things.

Expect to get shoot by people who don't like to melee.

Not everyone loves the knife-shive-in-the-face approach.

On a side note, anyone who teabags should be punished by having a rope tied one end to a car and the other to their manhood. The car would drag them till it is horrifyingly ripped off.

I always swing my knife by mistake in COD4 because I try to turn too hard and click the analogue stick down...

It has always resulted in being shot to bits, never in a duel.

I feel that pain. I hate playing on a console.

I've never heard of this knife duel stuff. Why would you fight a guy in knife combat if he is foolish enough to charge towards you so you can easily gun him down?

I've done that many times as well, but on a rare occasion I am actually greeted by a fellow knife fanatic and am treated to a proper duel. Very, Very rare occasions...
