Shotgun all the way - because I suck at headshots and ebcause I never run out of ammo with it.
As for the second tier of weaponry, I usually choose between the Auto-Shotty and the Assault Rifle depending on the level.

If the level consists mainly of halls and corridors, I always go for the Auto-Shotgun but if the level is open, large areas and there's a chance I'll meet a tank, I'll go with the Assault Rifle.

Usually the Shotgun, but whenever I play Expert campaign I find myself shooting the survivors too much, so I pick the uzi to minimize friendly-fire damage.

Still doesn't stop me from accidentally incapping them, but at least I tried.

Primarily I go for the uzi as it'll hold off distanced hordes quite well, but indoors with many corners of surprise is a no-brainer to a shotgun.

I always snag the shottie. I've found (especially on expert) zombies taking just a little more damage than I'd like, and nothing beats a shotgun at point-blank, period.

Plus it sounds nice.

My personal heirarchy off L4D guns, in order of preference:

1. Auto-Shotty
2. Assault Rifle
3. Pump Shotty
4. Dual Pistols
5. Uzi
6. Single Pistol
7. Hunting Rifle

This of course changes drastically when there are enough gas cans and propane tanks around, cuz I love blowin' stuff up. I wish there was a flamethrower, for comedic purposes more than tactical advantage. The one-liners alone are worth adding it.

Depends on the level, I use pump shotgun for the first 2 levels of No Mercy, but I use the Uzi for the first to of Blood Harvest

i think i've only ever seen the hunting rifle used well once... and that was the level where you start in the church and there's thirty odd zombies to pick off...
alongside the fact on most difficulties the hunting rifle will near incap anyone on one friendly fire incident... why does anyone use it?

I play weirdly, it seems...I go with the uzi, and then grab a hunting / sniper rifle asap.
Why? I mean, does this actually help the team or do you have to continuosly pull out the pistols?
I snipe the hell out of the special zombies. It's fun.

Pump shot upgrading to Hunting rifle or Auto shot

I almost never use the Uzi/M16, they chew up ammo too fast and don't have multi kill ability the other weapons have.
Hunting rifle is definately my favourite, thins out hordes unbelievably quickly if you take the time to be precise with it. It's not so hot against the Tank though.

Shotgun. However if the entire team has chosen shotty i begrudgingly take the uzi. I found an entire team with a shotgun dies very quickly as if more than two reloads at the same time you get swamped due to the hideous reload times.

Shotgun, nothing can seperate me from that baby.
except you know...a hunting rifle.
Hunting rifle > Auto Shot> pump Shot> automatics.

the automatics just run outta ammo too fast, can eat up a whole clip on a handful of infected and when you only get about 10 reloads you'll end up forced to use pistols alot.

the hunting rifle is for those amongst us that know how to ocnserve ammo, every shot counts cause each shot takes a bit longer to get out.

What i pick depends on the difficulty, game mode and mood i am in.
The hunting rifle is awesome, i dont know why people ahve so much against it. If infected are swarming at the dorr 1 shot will take about 6 of them. We had an enitre team of hunting rifles, and we breezed though the level. On advanced we creamed thought tanks and it a zombie get close just twat it and shoot it while its on the floor.
