This morning my good friend and I got into a debate about Wind Waker. I said that the game was good but the graphics killed it, he argued that the cel shade was good and added to the experience. So to end this debate: Was Wind Waker's cel shading good or bad? Please also state your reasoning for your opinion.

I absoluely loved the idea of cell shading for that game. It gave it a real cartoony feel, which no Zelda has ever had, which I personally thought went well with the game they were trying to make (more upbeat than normal, bright and bubbly). In no way did I think they graphics stopped this from being a great zelda game, because i consider this to be one of the best, even with the so-so sailing part to it.

When I first saw screenshots of it, I though they had destroyed Zelda.
When I got to play it though, I loved the graphics. Ok it's cell shading, but really good cell shading.
The way the water ripples, the way bombs explode... Magic! It's still the best cell shading I've ever seen.
I wouldn't mind if they made another zelda game with Windwaker graphics.

I don't think the Windwaker would have been as good if they had gone for realistic graphics.
First of all, the colourful ocean would have been rather gray and a young link works better in cell shading if you ask me.

Wind Waker was a gorgeous game, in terms of gameplay and graphics.
Want to argue games as art? Start with WW.

I couldnt disagree more. Cel shading done correctly can make a game outstanding. Wind Waker for example. Rejuvenated the Zelda series. A shot in the arm if you will. The game was silly and over the top and the graphics reflected that. Not to mention it was a BLAST to play.

EDIT: Stop using "Gay" to describe things you dislike. Its disrespectful to LGBT people.

Almost ruined the series?! Look at the poll results so far, the majority liked it. It was one of the top selling GameCube games, and rarely got a review score below 90%.

How exactly did it almost ruin the series again?

I personally thought the graphics were charming. It was a shock at first after the promise of realistic graphics, but after I played the game on release, I loved it.

Totally agree. The cell shading gave the whole game a more whimsical, storybook adventure kind of feel, as opposed to the real ocean which is kind of... dreary.

The Cell Shading added a brilliantly fun and almost Miyazaki esque character to the Wind Waker world. I really, really enjoyed it and thought it was very well done, especially considering that the darker Twilight Princess, while still good, lacked the charm of Wind Waker.

I thought the graphics were awesome. Even compared to today they still look great, the only problem being the lack of smooth lines around objects, but that was just the nature of the console. Compare this to Twilight Princess, the "mature" Zelda. It looks like crap. Muddy textures everywhere, and a far less emotive set of characters.

WW is an awesome game.

How very eloquent of you.

I hated wind waker's graphics. I wasn't so much the cel shade in of itself as the art design within that cel shading, it was far too cutesy. Prince of Persia, TF2 and Okami have shown you can do cartoony and grown up at the same time. While I was playing Wind Waker I couldn't shake the feeling I was much older than anyone the designers had intended to play.
I think that the graphics (or the attitude taken with them) reflected in the game as well, Wind Waker was the easiest Zelda game I can remember playing.

I don't have a problem with the cel shading, I just wish it wasn't so relentlessly childish in it's design.

I thought it didn't detract from the experience. The cute graphics melded well with the general theme of the game I felt.

I thought it was an absolutely beautiful game, one of the best looking games I've ever played. I wish they would make another Zelda like it.
I was thinking about how a cel-shaded Ocarina Of Time would turn out (in my mind, very good indeed).

Yea but they never will sadly... but i do agree with you a cel-shaded OoT would be an Epic Win on Nintendo's part.

I love the story and world set up but I think it would have been better if they did it in style like Majoras Mask. ( Have no idea if that is typed right.

Maybe we should start a petition... I have a lot of great ideas for Nintendo games which they'll never do in a million years.

I liked the graphics, but the sailing was annoying.

I have to correct you here.

SC2 for the gamecube was the best sold version. Zelda fans will buy every game with link in it, it is hard to find a LoZ game that didn't get sold a lot.

It's nintendo, any 'bad' or 'negative' review will generate enough hatemail to crash your computer when you try to access your mail. But the same is true for fans of every console exclusive.

It's different, people said the same about the change from 2d to 3d.

i think zelda should have gone for the cell shaded look and get more stilish and creating interesting charachters in its universe, twilight princess had realistic graphics that kind of reminded me of Shadow of the colossus without the isolation and epic bossfights that made it a great game, TP was bad because of its pretention to realism, wich is weird when you are doing a game where grass shoots money

cell shaded games can be really good. Dragon Ball Z Budokai was cell shaded and it looked much better than WW did. don't get me wrong, there were times when it did work but it would have been better if it hadn't been cell shaded.
