...But before we do, we'll need to pick a nation.

Our choices are above. There are other nations than the ones I listed, but... I kind of suck with them.

So, the factions:

England: Really powerful longbowmen, strong infantry and acceptable cavalry. Starts with London, Nottingham and Normandy, and should secure the rest of the British Isles before turning their sights on continental Europe.

France: Strongest cavalry in the west, and later on gain infantry capable of standing up to England and Denmark. Their crossbowmen are acceptably good. Unfortunately, most of modern France is currently held by robber barons who do not recognize the authority of the French King, so they'll have to be brought to heel before they can start looking outside their borders.

Spain: In my opinion, the strongest military in the game... except at the beginning. Early on, their infantry is an absolute joke, though their cavalry and crossbowmen are decent. Later on, though, their infantry and cavalry get much better. Their starting position is in the Northern Iberian peninsula, with the rest of the peninsula being occupied by Spanish rebels (Including El Cid, funny enough - in fact, he's got the strongest rebel army in the world at this point), Portugal and the Moors. Their first goal should be to take the rebel settlements nearby (Though again, El Cid might give them some trouble) and then to take out the Moors and Portugal.

Holy Roman Empire: Rules over Germany. Their land is quite unified, compared to the western nations, so they don't have to spend as much time consolidating their land and can make an early invasion of France or Denmark. The Kaiser in in low standing with the pope as the gae starts, though, so avoiding conflict with other Catholic nations for the time might be prudent if they wish to avoid excomunication. Their army is... average, though they do have an awesome unit, called Rieters, who basically use the same tactic as the steppe horse archers, except with pistols. Kewl.

Italian city states: They are Milan, Venice and Sicily, and unit-wise are very similar. Italian militia units are superior to other militas, and their professional infantry and crossbowmen aren't bad either. Their cavalry is quite weak, though. They start in Italy, of course, and if they dn't want to anger the pope, they'd be best served by building a navy and attacking non-catholic nations.

Byzantine Empire: An empire in decline, and it shows. Their army, while strong, is outdated. They can't use gunpowder, their kataphractoi are functonally similar to but weaker than knights, their crossbowmen are average at best and, to top it all off, they are not catholic which makes them a safe target for both the muslims AND catholics. On the upside, they do have some strong infantry, but they alone can't keep the empire together for long.

Poland or Hungary: Similar to each other, hence the grouping. Recent converts to catholicism, they fight more like their steppe bretheren than western europeans. Both have weak infantry and archers, but strong melee and missile cavalry. They both have a lot of land into which to expand, though they will most likely come into conflict with each other at some point.

Denmark: The Danes have some of the strongest infantry in the world (They are descended from Vikings, after all) and their archers aren't too shabby either. Their cavalry leaves something to be desired, though. They start in... wait for it... Denmark, in a position that basically guarantees a fight with the Holy Roman Empire. The Danes can match the Germans man-to-man, but at the start of the game, there are a lot more Germans than there are Danes, which could complicate things.

Why didn't you list X?
Scotland: Scotland is really, really weak. They're somewhat similar to Denmark in that the focus of their military is in infantry, but their infantry is still inferior to England, who is more than likely going to wipe them out without much fuss.

Russia: This one is more subjective; Russia can be very, very strong, if played right. The main proble is that I suck with horse archers, which is one of the focuses of Russia's military.

Portugal: Spain, but weaker and in a worse position.

Moors and Egypt: Decent units and alright starting positions. Their main problems are that 1) They will almost certainly be the subject of some crusades, which can be quite difficult to overcome. 2), and much, much worse, they (Egypt especially) are the first nations to see the Mongol and Timurid invasions, and will assuradly be ROFLstomped by the frankly ridiculous strength both bring to bear. Nations further to the west have the advantage of the invaders being more split up with several fronts, as well as more time to prepare (and the catholic ones can request a crusade against them as well).

Turkey: Makes extensive use of horse archers, which I suck with. Other than that, they have good infantry and gunpoweder, and easy pickings in the Byzantines.

SO. Let's pick a nation. If one of the grouped options wins, I'll pick the one with the most written requests in the thread and, failing that, I'll pick one at random.

At the time I started, Denmark was winning, so that's what I went with. Maybe I'll do another one after with England.

Personally I vote for Venice, It's position and naval dominance would allow for numerous targets, and can easily develop a very strong economy to support large armies.

I don't know anything about Total War. I voted for the Byzantines because I figured it might be fun to make you play a losing side.

I liked playing Spain. It's nice to be able to invade someone nearby (the Moors) without the Pope bitching about it.

SCOTLAND.

ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE. DESTROY THE ENGLISH, GRIND THEIR BONES TO MAKE YOUR BREAD.

Then stack the papacy with your own cardinals.

Denmark is a fucking fantastic nation in Medieval 2. Not to mention, they have Viking units. How cool is that?!

If you want to be lame and just mass horse archers, the Byzantines have you covered.

England if you want to try a war at home and abroad. Otherwise, I'd choose Milan or Venice as they are both very strong Italian states. Milan has the potential to take over most of everything. On my current file, that's exactly what they're doing.

The right answer is, of course, Scotland. Never you mind that you think they're weak. Challenge is for the strong, survive and smash the English bastards!

...Oh fine. Out of your considerably less awesome options, I voted for the Byzantines. I really, really like the idea of the Danes, mostly because the Scandinavians are freaking sweet, but I rather think the Byzantine option would be something a little different.

I was boring when I played Medieval 2 and just went with the French (although I had a good time with them when I took over all of America in Empire). For the sake of entertainment, I would go as Denmark though because, come on, VIKINGS!

Byzantines, I really like the fact that there heavy cavalry and infantry contrast with the lighter Muslim power stuff well.

Venice! Seriously, you're in a good position to expand in all directions, you have a well defended main city, and your late period units are absolutely gorgeous. I usually do heavy infantry armies with simple scouting cavalry, so I don't worry too much. Just enough to harass the lancers and let my heavy infantry wipe the floor with the byzantines crappy troops.

Scotland is a very fun faction to play for similar reasons, but they're in the most boring part of the map, with only England and Ireland to contend with, and if the Pope doesn't swing in your favor, you've got a tough slog to get through at the beginning.

Venice. The trick is to get your Cardinal into the position of Pope and then use that influence to call crusades against Milan, HRE, anyone else... My most recent game as Venice, my priests have been Pope 3 or 4 consecutive times and I control half the college. It's pretty awesome. Plus, Pavise Crossbowmen are boss.

ive always gone with venice. their starting position is fantastic (in my opinion, im sure it doesnt work for everyone) giving them access to almost the entire game world easy enough. you can go north and conquer europe, or sail straight south and then east to get a great headstart on the inevitable crusade for jerusalem. their units are almost all super cheap and often superior to other basic units once upgraded. ive always been able to build legions of soldiers in the first 20 or 30 turns. once i even conquered the papacy at turn 20.

I vote for the Holy Roman Empire. Stretch all the way from Metz to Novgorod! The HRE doesn't excel at any one thing, but they have no weakness, either. If you play your diplomacy right, you can take on anyone and everyone.

Well, it looks like it's up to either Denmark or England. I'll have give the poll a little more time to break the tie before I start the game.

Also, I don't usually bother with getting my own guys into the papacy, opting instead to either just kiss up to him or ignore him when needed. Obviously I try to avoid excommunication, but given the choice between that or taking lucrative land, I tell him to shove it.

That said, I might try a little harder in the college of cardinals for this game, if only to make things a little more interesting.

For the record, I'm planning on recording battles and emmbedding the youtube videos here. I won't do that for every battle (like when I outnumber the guy 10 to 1 or something), just the larger and more interesting ones.

I went HRE. Smack dab in the middle of the world, up against France, Denmark, Venice, Milan, Hungary, and Poland right out of the gate. French cavalry crushing your spearmen and English swordsmen crushing your cavalry, the pope's constantly pissed at you cause you're embroiled in a three front war and don't have any troops to spare for his stupid crusade that's just gonna be overrun by the Mongols anyway.

...fuckin' challenge accepted.
