Way too expensive to enjoy it. I played some demos and some free versions on the pc and it is pretty fun but I'm not gonna invest money into a card game when there are a lot better free and cheap games.

MTG is a lot more mature than your average card game and that's why I like the sense one gets from it. The last pack I saw had cards the size of A4 sheets! How can you not like that? That said, I have only played it once. I got tempted to start but I got into D&D 3.5 and I got hooked.

To everyone that plays it though, good for you (nothing you don't already know) cause you are into something that kicks ass. I mean, how cool does this sound?

If you could cast one spell for the rest of your life, what would it be?

An entire booster pack series was based to this. Wow.

To anyone who hasn't tried it yet, give it a shot cause you are in for a treat.

Haven't played it in years though still have my cards from over a decade ago. I played when it was unlimited (3rd ed?) and revised ed. and Legends and Ice Age expansions. I ought to try and sell some of them. My favourite and most effective deck was a blue/black deck that revolved around Lich [http://gatherer.wizards.com/pages/card/details.aspx?name=Lich] (lose all life and draw a card whenever you gain a life) and Illusions of Grandeur [http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=159749] (gain 20 life). I also had Ancestral Recall and Time Walk, Mahmotti Djinns, Dopplegangers, Royal Assassins and some others I can't remember.

At its finest, in a game with 5 others I was able to win in one go. Once you get 20 cards in your hand it makes quite the difference. It was apparently the right combination of cards and I took out two players, Time Walked and took out the other 3. It was a fun and exciting game and about as good as I ever got :)

I think they may make prebuilt and balanced decks now for beginners to play, might pick up a few of those and see if I can convince anyone to have a go.

Magic's a lot of fun, though a bit too costly for me. Luckily, my friend has enough cards to build decks for our whole gaming group. Nerd. ;)

It is great fun, except all my friends only have one strategy. Mono green big things hit things hard, and U/G Infect things hit things hard.

Not exactly exciting stuff.

I've been playing for almost a decade and will still be playing for years to come, I've discovered I haven't had any problems acquiring expensive cards since most of the older cards I had were highly sought after for EDH(erm... Commander now), Vintage, Legacy, etc... So my answer to this more then just a fun time, a freaking blast!

Magic is, hands down the best designed card game system I've ever seen. However, all the crap that Wizards seems to feel pressured force into each release dilutes the quality and makes it extremely variable from set to set/year to year. I think they've lost alot of the old set focus that I used to like (I want artifacts, I'll buy Mirroden. I want creatures, I'll buy Invasion), but also gained more draft balance. Drafting is about the only competitive fun I think you can find in Magic anymore, what with the 300$ mindless Jace spam and all the similar types of players competing in Constructed.

I might get HARDCORE back into magic if A) They sort of reset and said "All cards from this set on will be valid in all tournies" and designed around that principle and B) They introduced more rigid deck construction rules, specifically regarding the amount of Mythic Rares, rares, uncommons that you can have in a deck (Which they won't, since they want to make as much money as possible), such as you can have the normal 4 Common copies, only 3 uncommon copies, 1 Rare copy and 1 Mythic copy, as well as a maximum of 2 Mythics per deck.

Personally I think theres all kinds of potential in a Constructed format like that ^ but it'll never happen T__T

I played it a few times with my oh-so-slightly sociopathic friend. I wasn't in the right mindset for it, so I didn't enjoy it. I barely knew any of the rules and the values of anything.

You debuffed my Kankronkling Gwabbersnort with your Wind of Less Magiks? WTF does that even mean?!

I'd like to try it again sometime though :)

Used to play it a lot back in the days. I remember buying crap loads of Ice age and Legends boosters. Sooo many rubbish cards, and not nearly as many halfway decent.

Well, at least i will never be short on bookmarks.

Wow. A lot of people have the misconception that it's too expensive.

Well, for those who're interested, my wife and I build >$20 decks and have a great time with it. You don't need to play EDH or Type II to have a good time with it. In fact, given the lack of restrictions on casual play, you can make some really interesting decks.

I love the game. Not just the game, I love the artwork and vision that goes into telling a story and creating a world through a card game. Doesn't have to be the most expensive game in the world. If you and your friends play competitively with each other and you feel that you simply MUST own a Black Lotus, then yeah... it may cause you to lose your house to the bank. If you decide to play Pauper format (a version of the game using only commons) then a deck will probably set you back about £5 max.

Oh, and don't buy booster packs.

Buy the cards direct. I recommend Troll and Toad, Channel Fireball, and AdventuresOn.

I played from the beginning until the edition that had the frozen lands (I forgot what it was called) I mostly had to quit because my school banned the game after a teacher saw us using cards like "Demonic Tutor" and them getting all uppity about the guy having a pentagram (went to a Catholic school). Got back into it a little before Kamigawa but I really couldn't keep that much interest because I had built my perfect goblin food chain deck and the local tournaments were only allowing the newer and newer edition cards to be allowed for play (partially because cheapness of certain older cards and the fact that Kamigawa had a lot of mechanics that clashed with older decks). I kind of stopped caring because as a highschool student and then as a college kid the input of money to keep up with tournaments was just way too much. Yea the whole buying packs is fun and all, but it is kind of a dated method for card games, imo. You honestly can build a better deck by buying cards separately and probably pay equal or less money than just buying tons of packs of cards.
It was a fun game while it lasted, but now that I'm 25 (and now in a non English speaking country) there really is no opportunity/room for something like Magic the Gathering in my life. Money seems to be better invested in videogames.

Don't drink, don't smoke.

So money that would go to alcohol and cigars goes on cards.

Makes sense in my world.

I rather enjoy it myself, I spend about a couple hours a week rearranging cards into decks, I've sunk about a hundred dollars into the hobby and have been able to come with 90 + quality decks to vs my friends with and it gives us something to do when we hang out. I've also tried Yu Gi Oh D&D and Warhammer miniatures and I gotta say, its not nearly as expensive as any of those.
I find its game play preferable to Yugioh since theres not nearly as many cards that rely on specific cards, plus you get more cards for your buck and since the cards are made from a single piece instead of a piece of card bored with a picture glued on they don't get damaged as easily

its not as hard to get together as D&D since you don't have to have someone stress over the world for a couple hours a day and it doesn't require full cooperation of all the players.

its not nearly as expensive as war hammer which one average a is like a dollar for the lowly foot soldier basic pieces, comparable to the commons of magic.
